Closed Schools

Due to area fires, Northwood High School and Canyon View Elementary School will be closed on Monday, October 22, 2007. All other IUSD schools will remain open. For up-to-date fire information, tune to AM 1640.

UPDATE: As of late Sunday, the fire that burned more than 4,000 acres along the edge of northeast Irvine had been mostly contained near Irvine homes and schools. Northwood High School and Canyon View Elementary School, which will both be closed on Monday, Oct. 22, are expected to reopen on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Because of concerns about air quality in the region, outdoor activities - including PE exercises and sports practices - will be canceled at all IUSD schools until further notice. Please refer to this website for continuing updates.

I pass 2 landfills on my way north and south each week. I get to watch them grow and change. . .

The only hills in south Florida. . . (one is far south Dade is named Mount Trashmore.)

Anyway, if they do them there like they do them here, I don't see a thin layer of dirt being

much of a hindrance to fire. These landfills have methane torches that you

can see at nite, burning a dark blue flame, but I assume they are burning

all the time and can't be seen in daylight.

Also, even if a landfill is supposed to be free of toxic waste, where do you think

those long lasting light bulbs with the mercury in them go? Or small batteries.

Or bits of this and that that may have bad stuff in them that people don't realize is there?

I forgot to mention that during the press conference the ticker at the bottom said the fire is 5% contained.

On my way to work I looked down Jeffrey road and didn't see anything there directly. All the smoke were coming from Portola Hills area. Driving up the 5 I only saw some small white smoke coming out of around the 261.

Our company has a contractor that lives out in Santiago Canyon. I hope him and his family are alright.

True. My contacts with the OCFA say the origin of this fire, Santiago and Silverado, is a favorite for arsonists as well. This is pretty much the textbook 'worst nightmare' scenario for the OC Fire folks. Stay safe, everyone. Who knows what will happen next.

I called the company who installed the Central Air system for my house. They told me that when you turn on the system, it is all internal air circulation. They depend on your house's air leakage to provide outdoor air. You might to check with your own a/c company.

According to OCFA, you are suppose to turn on the A/C and with new airfilters. I replaced my filter this am with the 3M 1700 series. My old filter was only 2 months, and it is very dirty.

I've never seen a household A/C system with an air exchanger. They've all pulled 100% of their air from the return in the hallway.

I wonder if any of those spray-on air filter treatments would screen any of the odor from the household air.

NEWSFLASH! THIS JUST IN.

Video tape has been discovered, capturing what is believed to be several executives from KB Homes and Lennar running away from the scene!
