Wow, it's been so long since I've seen Orange Julius mentioned! So it sounds like they are still in business. That's good. I remember hanging out at the Brea Mall and the Orange Mall way before that - in the 80s - and stopping by the Orange Julius. Memories.  :'(

My favorite cake is German Chocolate. Since the weather has cooled down this week, I can finally run the oven. I'm going to bake one using an old Amish recipe for the cake. I make a mean German Chocolate Frosting.

Disclaimer: I am not Marketing Director for the Amish. Likewise, I am unaffiliated with sugar and flour companies everywhere.

Hi SoCal

I love German Chocolate Cake.  Since I have already derailed from the no-sugar diet in April fitness challenge, would love to have some.  Bring some to the Kobe parking lot?

If you're looking for a lighter tasting cake than the German Chocolate, I recommend the Dobash cake from King's Hawaiian Bakery.

"Chocolate chiffon cake with chocolate pudding filling and topping."

Sure, it's a bit far in Torrance, but if you're headed up there anyway, good place to stop by and pick up some.

But you are part Amish right?

Well, that would be like asking if someone is part Baptist. Amish is a Christian denomination. So, in that sense, no. I am not part Amish. Although I share their Bible and their faith, I am not part of their denomination because I do not follow the teachings of Jacob Amman. If you mean ethnically, then I suppose the answer could technically be yes to a somewhat distant degree in western Europe, for example from Germany, depending on which people they are related to. Amish groups sprung up in many parts of Europe including Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Russia, etc. For example, there are the Pennsylvania Dutch which I'm sure you've heard of. The "Dutch" in that case, does not really mean Dutch from Holland as we English-speakers think of it but rather it is a corruption of the word "Deutch" (pronounced doy-tch) which means "German" in German. Lastly, if you mean culturally, then maybe just a little bit as my father and most of my family is from the rural midwest not far from Amish country. But they're not Mennonite or anything like that either. (Mennonites = think "Amish" but "with electricity".)  They're definitely what the Amish would call "English". "English" is the Amish term for any outsider who is not Amish, whether they are from England or not. But yes, they were predominantly from England. There's a big German influence in midwest cooking just like the Amish cooking so there are some similarities like that among people in the region just like Scandinavian in more northern parts of the midwest. Not all those Germans are Amish Germans. But I was the first one among them after hundreds of years spent living in the midwest and east coast to be born and raised here on the west coast, in The O.C. So the short answer would have to be nope, not Amish!  :)

So, McDonald's Happy Hour is back! M-F 2-5, BOGOF cafe drinks. And so is their seasonal Frozen Strawberry Lemonade, which my boys look forward to all year. Which means, since today is in the upper 80s, it was what I like to call: Abduct-The-Neighborhood-Children-Walking-Home-From-School-Fill-Up-Your-Car-With-Kids-And-Treat-Them-All-To-Frozen-Drinks-Then-Drive-Them-All-Home Day!

Watch out for neighborhood kidnapping! May randomly strike any hot day after school.

There is a rumor swirling that a S'mores Oreo is on its way, too.

There's a carton of these sitting on my kitchen counter. I tried it. They do taste EXACTLY like cotton candy. It tastes like someone took some cotton candy, wound it up really tight, condensed it, and stuck it between two vanilla Oreos. Although it's very authentic, I don't really like the cookie. I'm sure kids would like it, though. Or someone who is obsessed with cotton candy.

damn it socal - i think you are the single reason i cant keep my weight down :-(

now i need to try this.

IHO - look out for some leftover oreos hitting the basketball court this week.

I'm making a Banana Cream Pie in a graham cracker crust tonight. I remember a couple years ago you said you liked this kind. I'll tell Iho to replace the Cotton Candy Oreo rejects with a slice of my pie.  That is... if it's safe in his hands.
