2011: Year of the iPad 2!

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
So let?s talk about work today; being productive with your Android.  Fortunately for me, the most I ever need for my line of work is word processing, spreadsheets and of course email.  This is easy; I haven?t touched MS Word for about three months now.  Everything is Google Docs if possible...

Most of what you read everyday is done through Google Docs; across my htc, laptop & desktop.  Of course things take a little longer on the htc, but I have a learned a lot of ?work-arounds? without having a mouse, right-click, or adequate cut & paste.

The app is easy to use and syncs well; you can use it off-line if you need to write something up to upload later.  The Spreadsheet function works good; I mean the most complicating function for me is usually to SUM some columns anyway.  But yes I have uploaded complicated spreadsheets from the desktop and it still works on the htc; like the True Home-cost Calculator.

Onto the LG for a minute; the physical keyboard of the LG is great for work texts and dictating orders live on speaker phone.  I still can?t seem to merge the two devices for work just yet!

On the Docs desktop version, you can do Presentation, Drawings and Forms... Still have a lot to explore...  I?ve been using MS Word professionally for well over 10 years, I?ve come to rely on it for the most pressing deadlines and projects... If Google can lure me this easy from MS Office, who knows that can happen...!

Google Docs is awesome for collaboration on documents but if you really want a free desktop MS Office replacement, you should go OpenOffice.org (now forked into LibreOffice).

Haven't used MSO past version 2007 and MS knows they don't totally own the market anymore (which is why they now have ad-supported free/starter versions).

A phone is still a tough platform to do true document editing on because of the move to capacitive/finger touch screens (the resistive/stylus combo was more precise) but I guess that's why phone screens keep getting bigger.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the other Android Office Suite options:

ThinkFree
DocumentsToGo
QuickOffice
Polaris Office
OliveOffice

Of those, the reviews say QuickOffice is the best (they also have an HD version for tablets).

And back on topic, an analyst predicts the iPad will still be the dominant tablet for the next decade:
http://www.bgr.com/2011/08/08/apple...te-tablet-market-after-a-decade-needham-says/

I was at South Coast Plaza this weekend and there were tons of people carrying around iPads (or should I say tons of Asians?). Even kids had them... must be nice to have rich FCB parents... I guess if you can afford some of the stores in SCP, letting your kid run around the mall carrying a $500 tablet is nothing.

I really just haven't have time to check out other Office suites... the only other thing that is sort of redundant is...

Evernote

But I might end up deleting it, as even that, I haven't used in weeks... but it does come handy sometimes...

RE: Giving gadgets to small to young children... Android Central did an interesting poll yesterday...

Poll: Do you let your kids play with your phone or tablet?http://www.androidcentral.com/poll-do-you-let-your-kids-play-your-phone-or-tablet

As I have mention before, these devices are meant to help our lives not debilitate them... again as much as I love my robot, the day it starts to be an liability than an asset is the day I will re-assist it's necessity...

This can be a whole other thread... but my son will NOT engage technology more than he engages real live people; and while an entire new generation or boys might be even more socially awkward because they have engaged machines since birth, my son WILL be more emotionally intelligent than artificial intelligent (if you will)...

These machines are meant to supplement and aid communication; and when it stops being that and is a substitute for face to face communication is when it becomes a problem...

The kid will not be automatically given a phone or tab for his third birthday, it will be a earned privileged, when he shows responsibility and maturity... just like a gun or car, you only give it to them when they are ready to handle it...

The rise of Android and why it could be about to crumble
GoogleAndroid-520x245.jpg

Was reading this article yesterday... funny how it really related to a TAL show a few ago that really put things in contex...

When Patents Attackhttp://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/441/when-patents-attack

So this one if for you Software Engineers out there... I now you are reading this... what do you think?

So for us ?lay-men? Android users, the problem is generally like this...  Large software giants like Google, Microsoft, Apple, hold patents are everything, they are vague, legalese, type weapons lawyers used to sue each other!  And instead of using patents to spark innovation they stifle creativity.

Really interesting article... Android just might not have a future...  I've read a little something about this but didn?t think much of it...

Wonder why everyone is suing everyone else in the smartphone industry?

I don?t know, maybe I?m just weird, but there is nothing quite like being at the airport terminal/gate for me.  Ok, so I have never spent a night sitting in one of these...

omaha_airport_gate_15_1513_400_400_1.jpg

But... just stand back a little; I really do think those, leather LAX chairs are the coolest, designs ever!  I remember those back in the late 70s; and they still look futuristically fashionable today... (well to me...)

Again, I?m just weird!  The airport is also a creative place for me; might be the oxygen-enriched/casino like air that they pumped in there...  But the notion of going somewhere far soon, somewhere exotic, somewhere to get a job done or to see someone important is simply fantastic for me...

I had a great first experience using the Delta WiFi on my last flight to Florida, felt really productive in the air; I?m shopping around for an American flight next gotta work a day in Vegas soon... :-( sad cause it?s going to be one really hot day...

HUGE shocker of a news today...

Google to Buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5 Billion

Google acquiring Motorola Mobility, wants to ?supercharge the Android ecosystem?http://www.androidcentral.com/googl...obility-wants-“supercharge-android-ecosystem”

Remember what I was talking about Patents battles...?  Well Motorola the granddaddy of mobile technology, old-school pagers... should give Google a war-chest of ammunition...

Come-on... who here still remember their first Pager...!

There were a lot of rumors that Google was going to buy RIM...http://www.androidcentral.com/crackberrys-10-reasons-why-google-will-buy-research-motion

But I guess they were eyeing Moto all along...

I guess it's official, Google is now a cell phone manufacturer...

You can say, Android is here to stay for a while longer... & here to duke it out with Apple...!

Just hit me... Nexus Prime is gonna be a Moto..
Not too sure about that... there's already a prototype one made by Samsung like the current Nexus S. It would cost them more to go back and have Moto redo it.

Like you mentioned, this is more about patent acquisitions than Moto's hardware operations... Moto has a pretty significant portfolio.

We'll have to wait until the purchase is completed.  But if/when it happens, it'll be interesting to see what happens with the lawsuits with Oracle, Apple and Microsoft.  I hate all of these dumb patent lawsuits.  The patent system needs to be revamped.

Been trying to catch up on the Google/Motorola buzz... here is a good Q&A about it... from what we know...

"How about the Nexus phones? Will they all be Motorola now?

No, Google has made it clear that the process of selecting a manufacturer for ?Nexus project? devices will not change. This means Moto is no more or less likely to have been selected as the manufacturer of the next Nexus phone as a result of this deal."

LOL!!!

Also... talking about Apple VS the World... did anyone else see this?

too funny... and they had to have the app drawer open to look more like the ipad...!

Good news for the Galaxy Tab... Apple also had a couple of injunctions to band tab sales... but are not lifted...!  yeah!http://www.androidcentral.com/galaxy-tab-101-isnt-banned-netherlands-now

More Android Tablet news to come... I have a Walmart experience coming up tomorrow...!

I?m a bit of a wreck this morning? with the kid running around and always stuff to do around the house I decided that the only way I was ever doing to run Gingerbread on the slate was to have someone else do it.  So I found the first ?guy? on Craigslist and emailed?

What is reminiscent of a drug deal, or anticipating what I imagine as a blind date I cleared my afternoon and we decided to meet at the Coffee Bean next to USC.  The dude shows up, all fine, looks reputable, and knows what he is doing; starts hacking away at my phone.

Twenty minutes of fiddling around, I had to move my car, waked away for 10 minutes; sudden shear fear sets in, what if I come back and he is gone!  I get back, phew... he is still there.  Another thirty minutes or so, I had to feed the meter, walked away again for 5 minutes, this time with more faith.

I didn?t want to appear too overly-excited, like a lonely guy longing for this power-user?s approval; so I didn?t ask too many questions.  We did our best to shoot the normal Android small talk, and again the cat totally checks out in my book.

The phone was done, got my Cyanogen 7, running Gingerbread 2.3.4, wanted 2.3.5, but ok... the phone was completely alien, but running fast.  I paid the dude under the table and we parted ways.

Half-way home on the 110, I get my first error code, and first forced-closed.  I can?t even change the wall paper back to a picture of the kid; humm? I better just get home.  Get home, all my WiFi codes are gone, he promised that it was backed up, can?t connect to the WiFi, the phone progressively shut-down; more and more function become in-operatable.

I was officially freaking out, trying not to tell or show the wife what happened.  The wife leaves for the gym; ok, some time to sit down and figure out what happened, neglecting the kid all together at this point.  I was out in the backyard playing with the kid, when the thought hit me; I?m getting HACKED!

I literally ran straight to the desktop, phew? Gmail is ok, bank account is ok, trading account is ok, about as many accounts as I can think of were ok.  Changed my Google password just in case and played around with the phone some more.  At this point, it won?t even boot up anymore; and as of this morning, it?s stuck on the Cyanogen splash screen.

Got a hold of the dude, and we should be talking today and meeting up again this week; so he still does seem reputable, but we?ll see? stayed tuned...!

Here are some who knows how it feels...

If you have to root Android... you're not doing it right.

As good as CyanogenMod is... you should be able to do whatever you want on unrooted Android... it's not like it's iOS.

I'm running 2.2 on my phone and it does what I want... what's so good about Gingerbread?

thanks for the response guys... I'm sooo not in the mood to type right now... going thru major withdraw symptoms...  not just because I don't have my little robot with me, but I'm really totally disorganized right now...

also..

on another volatile days like today the Sharebuilders website gets soo bogged down and slow, whereas the Mobile App site still soars...

Sorry... my thoughts are everywhere.. right now... while the kid is playing around with the mouse... bla...  So... trying to watch Bloomberg too...

so my little LG really picked up a lot of work slack yesterday... sent & received something like 160+ sms messages... was on the phone half of those times, clocked in about 190 minutes on the phone... mostly waiting in line at the DMV... I actually drained the full battery, before I got home; usually with the htc picking up most of the emails & web surfing, I won't even use one bar...

Trying to walk away from the computers all together today... the de-tox will do me some good...  was reading some articles of Smartphone addiction and glad I don't show any of these symptoms... how about you?  Well maybe for the last,, not email but sms...!  oh, and I only got one conversation crossed out of the 6+ people I was carrying on conversations at the same time, during one part of the day...  really funny... the wife and I are opposite of the normal couples, where I can multi-task like crazy while the wife only has a one track mind...
http://www.legalsupportpersonnel.com/legal-industry-insight/smartphone-addiction/

There are simple indicators that you're a smartphone addict:

-You can't go five minutes without checking your inbox.
-You have more than five email accounts.
-You respond to messages on your Blackberry in the middle of the night.
-When your inbox says, "no new messages," you hit the refresh button just to make sure.
-Checking email constantly is also a way to prove you're "always on top of things," and can respond instantly.
