2011: Year of the iPad 2!

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Yup... and it looks like they are getting out of the PC market too... the margins are too small.

Apple seems to be the only one that can make money off of computers.

The little guy went back under the knife yesterday? and when he woke up again he now has a little ginger-bread flavoring?

Meet up with the dude again, this time at his house in Melrose, for those of you who don?t know where Melrose is, it?s in Hollywood?  Entered the laboratory of a power-user,, very nice!

The dude is single of course, out of a job, is actually a corporate accountant; spots a white iphone, a galaxy s & all the hardware I can dream of? including the Galaxy tab 10.1.  Nice pad, a singles tech geeks, bachelor pad...

So.. I?m again a mess today, the phone is running fast but just like when you move a house & family; it will take a good few weeks before things are back in order.  I?m actually really missing htc Sense, eating straight un-skinned gingerbread is really rough around the edges; if I thought I can customize Android before, you guys haven?t seen Cyanogen? I can basically customize EVERYTHING? to many things that I need?

Trying to find those favorite htc widgets from the market, every icon has it?s home...

So, the dude installed a experimental version of 2.3.4, the stable version for my phone is only 2.3.3, but ok? they are working on it?  phone fast & very stable? some things better like the gallery some thing worst like mp3 player?

Much more to come?

In other Android news?

My head is spinning from all the smartphone news this week?!  Not including the wild market swings? BTW the htc is now a borderline day-trading lean machine?

Google buys Motorola? then?

WebOS might live on in other devices but looks like HP is dumping it? very sad news actually? now there are only Apple, MS, RIM & Android?

Wonder what will happen next week? have a good weekend?!

So who picked up a $99 TouchPad over the weekend...?

I was tempted, but couldn't justify changing the family plans for a spontaneous trip to BB; but for that price the hardware alone is worth it, heck as a expensive picture frame is almost worth it...  So I?m sure a lot of Android developers are all of a sudden going to be busy this week porting Android to the Touchpad...!http://www.androidcentral.com/project-started-port-android-99-hp-touchpad

Or...

You can use your new tablet as the coolest refrigerator magnet...!  Like this Nook color...

PC World hit the nail on the head... there is a entire tablet market out there just itching to buy something if the price is right; not if the price is the same as the ipad...http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/396294/what_300_less_buys_tablet/

What the article still recommends under $300 are...

Viewsonic gTablet... $269

Nook Color... $249

and...

Vizio Touchscreen Tablet with an 8-inch screen for $298...

and..

still no real word on Amazon?s $249 tablet...http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-20092393-93/analyst-amazon-could-sell-tablet-for-as-low-as-$249/

You should have elevated to medium talk by asking him about his marriage. you can only small talk for so long :-)

finally - i cant believe it took this long. i figured we would have had more Curb Your Enthusiasm fans.

I've tried getting into after watching Entourage but just not my thing I guess.  The guy created a hit show of Seinfeld (I can watch the re-runs until I go blind) that I LOVE watching.

So I fought my way into my local Walmart to try to see the Vizio tablet.  So, most of you reading this will probably never set foot inside a Walmart, so I spare you the trip and give you guys the blow-by blow...
http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/photos

You first pass the crowded in-house McDonald's, the crowds of food-stamp shoppers, grocery isles, all the cloths, upon cloths... I finally found the electronics section.  Think of your local Target, but mostly last years models...  There was a first gen Ipad (under glass), and a bunch of dummy phones.  But no tablets... No, those are digital picture frames, there are the video games & flat screen tvs; and a bunch of large scary people crowding around the counter in the middle of a day.

After another few minutes, I give up; I can?t find any tablets.  The tab was released last month, it can?t be in another section; maybe... There was a worker on the phone, hummm, he looks like he is on hold, ok, try to get his attention.

?Excuse me, um... hello, do you guys have the Vizio tablet?, after about another 5 minutes, of talking to the hand... he guy finally responses, ?oh, we don?t have any tablets!?, but... ?what about the ipad, over there??  ?Oh that is not for sale?...

Dead end, the worker gets swamped again... I give up, before I left the maze of isles, my Android tells me it?s probably only sold online...

Sorry, no hands-on review... but the video from yesterday does a pretty good job...

couple of observations...

note... the app drawer is the default view, you need to open a separate widgets window... & people of food stamps eat better than my family...

One day later...  we got Android on the Touchpad

The problem with the Costco one is you can't even demo it.

They have one out (if it's been charged) but because the plastic covers the buttons you can't use the Home, Back or Menu keys... what's the use of having a demo model that you can't even use?

HP's now defunct Touchpad display at Costco is even worse, the entire thing is behind a plastic cover so you can't even "touch" it... genius marketing display!

Very true...the phone booth people even put out a fake demo of the Xoom...completely dumb.

is costco selling the touchpads for the clearance price?  i was too late trying to nab them online for $99 and would like a couple to muck around with

Check this link for updates on who is selling:
http://m.slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?sduid=0&t=3220862

As I read, Costco is not updating their pricing. Of course trolls can update posts so take what you read with a grain of salt.

Oh man, what a weekend it was: 1. Some guy buying the only two remaining touchpads at Staples even though my wife was second in line 2. BB returning their stock to HP then actually selling them later, 3. Amazon selling them but then orders may be cancelled because their server got overwhelmed, 4. HP being completely sold out at the moment.

I was able to get a 32GB for $150. I plan on overclocking to 1.5 GHz and maybe porting Android over since people are working on it.

I wonder if HP planned this all along...

HP could have probably just cut the price in half and still sold these... maybe instead of losing $100mil, they could have lost less.

What would be great is if HP still continued to support webOS and it remained a viable mobile OS... then these blowout Touchpads would be the best tablet deal ever.

Next week:

"Due to overwhelming consumer response, HP has decided to continue on with webOS support and will restart production of Touchpads."

Another day and more Android tablet news?

another surprise for the Vizio tablet?

la56831.jpg

Vizio 8" tablet first of its kind to support Hulu Plushttp://www.prnewswire.com/news-rele...ng-8-tablet-launches-hulu-plus-128306898.html

That would make total sense, seeing as the tablet is trying to integrate with other Vizio televisions? the first official tablet to get Hulu?

Bonus... Androidguy31 on youtube should be announcing how to port Gingerbread to your new Touchpad today...!

Haven't been to Costco in more than a month... will be time to make a Costco run and see what hardware they are now supporting... and always forget to duck into Staples too...  hope to get my hands on some new gear soon...!

Got my OTA update on the TF yesterday morning... downloaded the Netflix APK (v246 for the XOOM thanks to someone on XDA) since it's not in the Market yet and watched some IP Man 2 last night (where is Panda?).

The update also fixed ad-hoc WiFi access so I can tether to my iPhone... and I'm also able to do Bluetooth tethering to my Android phone using PDANet's Tablet Beta app which is free and does NOT require root access.

I was tempted to buy two $99 Touchpads for my kids (and mount them in the IHOMobile) but they are hard to find.

Just went to Coscto yesterday, they only had Acer Iconias and the Vizios... they took down the HP Touchpad display (I was looking for it).

It's funny... many "experts" are saying the same thing I was saying a while ago... unless your products are priced well below the iPad or has some type of revolutionary new features, it's not going to be able to compete in the tablet market... because right now... it's just an iPad market.

If I was a tablet maker... I would really concentrate on aiming for that 7-8" size $200-$250 price point... since Apple isn't there... that's where you'll find your niche. That's how the Nook Color is carving out its place... and Amazon is probably going to jump in there too.

I think I have to go back to school to learn tech speak.
Oh c'mon... that's not reallly tech speak:

OTA: Over the Air
TF: Transformer
APK: Application Package File
XDA: Short for xda-developers.com, a site for mobile enthusiasts and developers who create custom roms, apps, roots, jbs (ie hacks) for mobile devices. Named after a 02-branded PDA called XDA that ran Windows Mobile on an HTC device (had to Wiki that)
IP Man 2: The sequel to IP Man, a movie about a Wing Chun (chinese martial arts) master who eventually was Bruce Lee's master
Panda: Former Irvine lover who now resides in the Dirty South with his twin bears, Eddie and Tom-Tom.

What's funny is all these comments like it was a surprise. We all knew it was going to happen.

A surprise would have been "Steve Balmer leaves Microsoft to become new CEO of Apple".

Maybe AAPL will be affordable again... I'll buy it from all those people who think it will be worthless.
