[quote author="24inIrvine" date=1211501986]Haha I was actually throwing a jab at Woodbridge, not complimenting them :)

But yeah, I will admit Westpark has my eye as well. Newer homes without the crazy mello roos!

CK, how do you know if its Westpark I vs Westpark II? Any major differences between the two? I always thought of Westpark as one and in the same, didn't know there were parts in it.</blockquote>

Westpark actually has three sections. Westpark I, Westpark II, Paseo Westpark. All are between Culver and Harvard.

Westpark I are the old homes built south of San Leandro and the 405. Built around 1970's.

Westpark II is north of San Leandro up to around Alton and Barranca (I'm not sure about the apartment/condo's North of the Edwards Theatre.) Built in the late 80's early 90's.

Paseo Westpark are the homes north of Alton or Barranca up to Irvine Center Drive. These were built in the late 1990's.

I'm not completely sure if people separate Westpark II and Paseo Westpark, but that's what I remember. Hope this helps.

[quote author="ABC123" date=1211529621]I went to elementary school in Irvine. One year our class took the train to downtown LA and we went inside City Hall, toured the LA Times and went to Olvera Street where we saw real live Mexicans. It was the highlight of my educational career. We used to take field trips all of the time and the teachers would tell us "back in the day, before proposition 13 there used to be a lot more money for field trips. Now the schools are so broke you need to get your parents to give us more money." Then we would have stupid little fund raisers so we could have more excursions, like spending a weekend on Catalina Island. I have to admit, that was pretty cool.</blockquote>

Hey, I went to those same field trips / camping trips. We might have gone to the same school? Eastshore Elementary? I had a blast avoiding the buffalo patties at the Catalina Island Marine Institute in 6th grade, and the 5th grade trip to Lake Arrowhead? Big Bear? was fun as hell too. Good times...

I remember those trips too. I hope my children will have those opportunities...

[quote author="bkshopr" date=1211518295]Stanford admission knows about the good high schools. Stanford will make room for a 3.7 GPA ghetto graduate than a 4.0 from most Irvine high schools.

[quote author="GrewUpInIrvine" date=1211517750][quote author="CK" date=1211513180][quote author="Meatball" date=1211512779]I see 24inIrvine?s point saying that being a super star at Woodbridge High. Wouldn?t that open the door to better GPA and elite colleges rather than being a mediocre at UNI? I am not saying that better college is the whole point of high school education, but if you really care about it shouldn?t been a ?King Turd? in a mediocre school be better off in that regard? Plus being a King Turd at Woodbridge is definitely different than being one at some Santa Ana schools if she still has concerns. I hope this would add some weight in your ordeal of persuading the wife! ;-P</blockquote>

Agree 100%. She'll see the light. Besides, we are in no hurry to buy right now, anyways. ;)</blockquote>

Against my better judgment, I'll jump into this. I attended Woodbridge... and later Berkeley. Most of my friends who went to Woodbridge attended either UCLA, USC, or otherwise attended Berkeley. One close friend who attended Irvine High attended Stanford (which is her loss - for those of you that understand the Cal-Stanford rivalry).

The school that you attend has VERY LITTLE TO DO WITH YOUR ADMISSION TO A TOP TIER UNIVERSITY. Your GPA, your standardized testing scores, and your personality (read your "activities") control. Each of these is more a function of parental involvement than anything else.

If you are sitting there and convincing yourself that your child must attend Yale to suceed, or that attending a particular school will make or break a letter of acceptance, you are fooling yourself. Try reading a book about the admissions process.</blockquote></blockquote>

I finally got the joke. Days later.

Things I noticed about Irvine:

I have never seen a sobriety check point in Irvine.

I have never seen a street cleaning vehicle in Woodbury.

The only place I can buy Chilean Sea Bass is at 99 Ranch. No one else has them.

Filet Mignon at Costco is always $.80 to $1.30 more per lb in Irvine compared to my parents Costco in Cypress.

I cannot find a decent Indian restaurant.

The only ARCO I know that accepts AMEX, VISA, or MC is in Irvine.

I only know of one 7/11 in Irvine at Irvine Center Drive and Culver.

Things I love about Irvine:

It's quiet (except for when the neighbors.... you know....)

All the major roadways are 50mph+

Plenty of open houses to check out on weekends

I have Chick-fil-a, Thai Spice, and Trader Joe's all within walking distance.

ARCO accepts my AMEX card.

Have you been to the <a href="http://www.indiacookhouseoc.com/map.htm">India Cook House</a> in the Heritage Plaza? I'm not an Indian food expert, but I like their buffet.

There's a mini 7-11 on Irvine Center Drive near the spectrum/Verizon amphitheater.

I never knew the arco takes amex. Is it the one near Quail Hill or the one on Jeffrey or both?

One more thing I dislike about Irvine is that gas always seems .20-.30 more expensive than everywhere else.

[quote author="skek" date=1211590929]<blockquote>Seriously, most Irvinites have never walked on the streets of Downtown LA</blockquote>

Not only has ipop walked the streets of Downtown LA, but he did so with $10,000 stuffed in his boxers...</blockquote>

Check that skekker, it was tighty-whiteys...

I started at the arrow and went to somewhere around the circle:

What? You thought the map was over-the-top huh...?! :)

[quote author="blue" date=1211585802]Don't know about the one at Quail Hill, but the one at Jeffery and Trabuco does.</blockquote>
Do they charge a "convenience fee" for using credit cards?

BTW, I see street cleaning machines in Woodbury regularly, usually mid-week, mid-morning.

I didn't notice any fees added to the price of my gas.

[quote author="hs_teacher" date=1211503132]Irvine has no Mexicans. What's the point of raising your kids up in a Mexican-free environment when they have to learn to interact well with them when they're adults? I know of many professions that involve working well with all sorts of people -doctors, lawyers, teachers, dentists, pharmacists, etc. With that being the case, I think that HB schools have a better balance than Irvine schools. But that's only good if you can stand the ugly houses in HB.</blockquote>

This post kind of reeks of racism. Are you implying that mexican americans' can't be doctors and lawyers? What do you think mexicans are good for?

I'm mexican american. I find it hilarious that a *high school teacher* would look down on someone of any race. Haha.

I disagree with your view point. HS is only trying to illustrate that you just can not ignore the Mexican consumers. They are the populations who in an intergral component of our economy. HS was only in illustrating some professions that interact with the Mexican population and did not name specific ethnicity in the helms of these professions.

Well, maybe the best thing to do would be to leave race out of these discussions. I've never made it a big issue in my life. I went to IHS and never really thought about it at all. It wasn't until I visited the midwest that I realized how cool it was that I had such a diverse group of peers and friends.

Irvine is diverse, thats great. For some reason its hard for me to think about it in any other terms then that, since i've been a child I've had neighbors and friends from all softs of different ethnic backgrounds.

To get us back on track:

I *really* like the village design of Irvine, with each village having a shopping center. I live a pretty busy lifestyle and its great having a nearby market and restaurants. The fact that Irvine is a stone's throw from newport is great too. A ten minute drive gets me to some of the better nightlife in orange county!

The planners are some of the sharpest designers in this country. No one entity can orchestrate in building a village from scratch. As much I am critical with design. They have done an excellent job in the villages. In modern time design are often challeged by code and governmental hurdles TIC managed to deliver superior quality after its battle.
