[quote author="hs_teacher" date=1211454427]I like Irvine because:

1. It's a big city so it's not too exclusive.

2. It has Asian restaurants.

I don't like Irvine because:

1. It's too far from the coast.

2. It has no night life.

3. Unlike the beach, there's not a single good place to people watch.

If they started updating Huntington, I'll much much rather live there.

Speaking of which, HB is buiding a new shopping center by Main Street.</blockquote>

1. I believe Irvine technically has some coastline, this was under debate for some time, but really 3 miles is too far?

2. That's why people live here.

3. While I'm not a huge fan of the spectrum, it's definitely a great place to people watch while having a beer.

Anybody here doesn't like the schools in Irvine because they are just too competitive? I don't like my kids committing most of their time trying to keep straight A-s. This reason alone would keeps me away from living in Irvine, which though I admit is a good and SAFE place to raise a family.

don't worry, there are still plenty of 3.0 GPA students that don't take 4 AP classes a semester in Irvine too :) It appears from that article somsone posted the other day that most of them go to Woodbridge.

Thank you 24inIrvine for the information. I happen to like Woodbridge a lot among all the villiages. I guess it would really serve me best if I ever decide to still live in Irvine. ;-)

Westpark II (between Barranca and Irvine Ctr Dr.) and Oak Creek also feed into Woodbridge HS, if you like a little newer homes (1995 - early 2000s). I've spent an insano amount of time researching the Irvine HS for my 4(!) year old as we assess the best neighborhood to buy in. Woodbridge seems like it has a nice balance all the way around.

Haha I was actually throwing a jab at Woodbridge, not complimenting them :)

But yeah, I will admit Westpark has my eye as well. Newer homes without the crazy mello roos!

CK, how do you know if its Westpark I vs Westpark II? Any major differences between the two? I always thought of Westpark as one and in the same, didn't know there were parts in it.

sky's the limit for woodbridge grads... you could be a classy janitor... or a cashier with dignity... or a migraine worker. maybe for them, college should be more of a hobby.

Don't worry, my wife throws jabs at Woodbridge HS all the time, she's a big UNI lover. I fight that battle with every open house. With respect the Westpark, the older section built out in 1986-1990 (south of Barranca) and the really old part right next to the 405 all feed into University HS now --- that is a change for this school year. The newer part of Westpark (aka Westpark II or Paseo Westpark) north of Barranca up to Irvine Ctr Dr. now feeds into Woodbridge HS. That's also a change, the WP II used to feed to Irvine HS. I can't believe I know all this stuff as a parent of kid heading into kindergarten this year....what a dork I am.

We live in the older WP right now, and would go to UNI if we stayed in this neighborhood. But I really dig the WP II area, so am trying to talk my wife into the positives of Woodbridge HS. I'm currently not winning that arguement.

Irvine has no Mexicans. What's the point of raising your kids up in a Mexican-free environment when they have to learn to interact well with them when they're adults? I know of many professions that involve working well with all sorts of people -doctors, lawyers, teachers, dentists, pharmacists, etc. With that being the case, I think that HB schools have a better balance than Irvine schools. But that's only good if you can stand the ugly houses in HB.

....Or your 4.4 or so GPA would land you as valedictorian of Woodbridge, as opposed the middle of your class at Uni or Northwood. Although I am not sure about it I believe being head of your class is not exactly frowned upon in college admissions....

Thanks, I have never been in Westpark I it looks like. But I love Westpark II, especially now that the district is built out. Have you tried saying your kid will look like an academic superstar at Woodbridge while he would just be lost in the crowd at Uni? Also, not sure about now butWoodbridge used to have better athletic teams than Woodbridge.

Ha! Read my last post. That sums up my entire arguement. My wife's response: "Oh great, so she can be King Sh*t of Turd Island". You see my challenge.

CK, May I ask what are the reasons that your lovely wife insists in going with UNI? Let's see if I can persuade her. :) And thank you for the helpful information about Westpark too!

I don't have kids, but the athletic program would be important for me and a major selling point. I do not know where these schools stand in that regard these days though

Haha, but I wouldn't consider Woodbridge a turd school, just a lot less Asian superstars

and astute observer, I don't remember which thread its in, but a few days ago someone posted a great link where you just type in an address and it tells you the elementary, middle and high school that your child would be going to. Its probably on the iusd website somewhere.

Yeah, acpme --- I knew you were....I just thought it was a good time to roll out the arguement to my wife to a larger test audience. ;)

Her arguement is not very well formed, beyond "It's the best, and always been the best". My arguement is that the circullum is largely the same at all the Irvine schools, and the social and athletic focus might balance better with academics at Woodbridge. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with either school --- but since I prefer the WP II area that feeds into Woodbridge, I'm just trying to build a case to buy a home in my neighborhood of choice. The more I look into Woodbridge, it seems like a pretty solid school. And once this kids of Oak Creek and WP II (Plaza Vista) start hitting HS age, I'll bet the test scores of Woodbridge start rivaling Uni and Northwood.
