What do you use your garage for?

[quote author="High Gravity" date=1232612604]A roomy garage is essential for the firearm enthusiast, a well-heeled demographic. You wouldn't want to see this in your family room, would you?

Very nice!

I think I know the house occupants:

I am really surprised that this discussion is still going on after an entire month.

bkshopr - you may be a perfectly nice guy, but your obsession with Asians and your ehtnocentric views are offensive. If I were to go on the blog and say that certain charts don't apply to Jews or white guys from Scottsdale, I would be lambasted, skewered, tarred and feathered. The people who are standing up for you are doing so because they are giving you a free-pass since you yourself are Asian and because you are probably a nice guy who means well, but also it is because they don't like me in general.

That in and of itself does not change the fact that I (and most likely others) find what you say to be exclusionary and elitist. Most won't bother to post their concerns publicly because they fear that the frothing at the mouth lunatics will start barking and unleash a blog-flog upon them. I tried long and hard to read others points of view on the matter while the fools were engaging in mob groupthink and slogan chanting. Despite all that, I can't give you the free pass. Sorry, I just don't see it. I am not saying that you are Hitler or engaging in hate-speech; you just fail to understand that when you make claims like "Asians have unpredictable wealth" you are also saying "non-Asians have predictable wealth" (yes, this is exactly what you are saying). I find it very hard to believe that I am the only one who sees this and my guess is that those that are able to understand it just don't bother to say it. You can take it for what it is worth or you can just join crowd of groupthink. Either way is fine, but I will go ahead and challenge you when you do it just as I would expect someone to do the same if I were saying the same things.

Welcome to the forum.

I do quite a bit of work in your area as well. Others may not understand you because you are in Arizona but I do. DC Ranch. Silver Leaf , Verandah, and Superstition Mountain were my projects. Well known builders out there such as Camelot Homes, Robson communities, Del Webb's Sun Communities, Doucette Company and many other builders I consulted with. Numerous shopping centers in Pheonix I also performed demographic for might even be some of your favorite centers.

I studied more about people other than just my own race and that includes a lot of older demographics living in open floor plan houses out by where you are. You may not accept my method of communication but many other developers and companies see my approach is direct and honest.

bkshopr -

I have never questioned your market knowledge. I don't know if you are honest or not (I don't know you). You probably are, but it certainly isn't a concern of mine.

I can appreciate your direct and brutal honesty. You can appreciate mine as well. Like I said, I certainly don't think you are a hate monger even though this forum crew likes to stuff up that straw man, paint my name on it, and then blow it to smithereens with their nuclear-tipped rocket propelled grenades.

It does concern me that you completely fail to see my side of the argument and that you chose to recite the laundry list. I would have been perfectly happy, had you said something like "I understand where you are coming from".

I really really wish you would get over yourself when it comes to being Asian and BKs comments regarding Asians, they are generalized, they are meant to be tongue in cheek and humorous. He is more than aware of the stereotypes and he points fun at them the same way a white guy would point fun at himself. As a white person if I were to make the same comments then yeah it would be considered to be racist. If I were a white man making degrading and derogatory statements about women then yeah, that would be sexist. But he is neither. So let it go. If his posts offend you so much pass them by, life is too short to be angry of such silliness. He is Asian, he wasn't born here, english is his second language, and he knows what people think about Asian drivers, and he chooses, rather than to be overly sensitive on the subject, to point out where some of the stereotypes might have some validity and humor. Its too bad more people cant laugh at themselves they way he can. Most people find the irony in his comments to be funny, at least he is willing to see himself in a less than serious manner.

It's amazing to me the things people choose to pick out of another person's posts. Bk has always seemed incredibly insightful and I've enjoyed the comments on the social ramifications of garages, sounds silly but he makes great points. Somehow during my posts it seems that I have given the impression that I am Asian, very strange. I subsequently posted a few very naive things that definitely outed me as NOT Asian. Anyway, Bk has always provided enlightening and fun posts, as well as proven his knowledge of the area and I appreciate that. I'm actually surprised that PANDA hasn't started the ethnicity poll already, maybe that would be too not PC even for PANDA.

Okay... do self esteem issues come from living in AZ? Sorry, but I am going to be harsh here... it isn't that people don't like you, but your desperate seeking of approval and your lack of self confidence that will make many people give you a hard time, whether it is IHB or any other forum. Seriously, find your balls. You try to make people like you, but then you try to rip BK because you perceive him as racist. Try opening your mind, rather than forcing your ignorant opinion on everyone. Yeah, Irvine home prices will always be more than PHX, get the f*ck over it. We have a whole hell of a lot to offer than the entire state of AZ will ever have. Your ignorance of culture, ethnicity, habits, and general human behavior is truly appalling. Please, please take a social psychology class at the local community college in AZ, because you need it. I have several Asian friends, some I have known for over 20 years, and they are all on the same page as BK. Then again they have a positive self esteem, understand what racism is, and understand what cultural differences are. You are truly embarrassing to the Asian culture, that is if you are actually Asian, because you if you are, then you are truly ignorant to recognize the cultural habits. BK is right, he called me out for using my garage as a storage center from hell, and I bet he would say that this is typical of Caucasians. Am I going to be offended? No, because it is true, at least for the majority of my ethnic group. Are there some who have clean a$$ garages? Yes, but statistically they don't, so I will not be offended by that. But, I'm not a whiny little bitch either. Again, find your balls and use your brain. I'm dumbfounded by your ignorance.

I pee in my garage. Is that bad? Should I be offended if BK tells me that is bad Feng Shui and makes me feel like he is elitist?

Some people are too sensitive, and need to stop being such sissies. I'm embarrassed by some of the people who are offended by BK. Reality is something he understands, not so much for the BK haters. I think he might even help me clean my garage now, or at least hire someone to do it. I'd much rather share the experience of cleaning with BK, because I understand the value of his time, and I realize I may not agree with him all the time, I know that I would learn something from him. He might even learn from me, that having just a screwdriver is useless.

You have a problem with me because I am an outsider who comes over and says that you are not as special as you think you are. Your group has these ideas that Irvine is the closest thing to heaven on Earth and it's worth huge debt premiums to live there. I have never said Irvine isn't a nice place, I just come on and say that it's not that special - for one, you could not pay me to move there. You can respond with the usual "Oh AZ is nothing but dirt and rocks - ho ho ho hah hah hah I feel better about myself now" all you want. I am just going to guess that you are most likely a home-owner and that you are ticked off that your means of shelter has stopped contributing your sense of wealth.

I would be careful about assuming that my attempt to have an honest debate somehow implies a lack of self-confidence or a need for approval. I could honestly not care less what you or anyone on the blog thinks about me on a personal level - it's completely irrelevant to me.

How do I try to get people to like me? I have never posted anything that says "Hey member X, be my friend I am clingy". Are you serious? I haven't posted in over a month - you think that it is something that I need? Come on now.

You are going off topic with the Irvine Home prices will always be more than PHX even though what you say may very well be true. The thing that I find funny about that statement is that it shows me that you think that I have some kind of ego-problem with the cost of housing being higher in Irvine. The problem that I have is with people not living within their means and buying into the greater fool game. If everyone who lives in Irvine has the means to afford the bloated house prices without all the financial voodoo then have at it. Of course, this isn't the case and it's the reason why California and the behavior of many of its residents has led this country into the financial crisis that is all around us presently because people like you were constantly finding ways to re-assure themselves that there was no bubble.

I am not Asian and I have never stated that I was. I don't know where you read that.

I am dumbfounded by your thick-headedness and inability to see other peoples point of view.

We can keep exchanging ad-hominem barbs or we could just agree to disagree and move on. I will warn you though that I will eventually get bored and move on. I'll be more than willing to let you have the last jab and win the contest.

Personally, I have a problem with you because you are an idiot - specifically can't tell your ass from a hole in the ground.

Unlike the blog, you are easily handled here. I just put you on ignore. You can rant all you want, I do not care.

Funny, I don't live in Irvine, and I'm not really sure I will ever live in Irvine. Yes, I am a homeowner, with very little debt, that I pay on time and pay down. I also own investment property, and every single month I am reminded of my wealth in the form of a check. Your ignorance is truly astounding. And you think I was/am one of the people that there was no bubble? You have to be f*cking kidding me. Do you not comprehend what you read? I have been posting about this bubble since 2006, when IR and I would have discussions in the comments of BMIT, oc_fliptrack, and Dr. HousingBubble. Where the hell have you been? Living underneath a rock, er desert? Maybe I will have more to say later, but as of right now your ignorance make me just want to ignore you. Again, I am just appalled by your ignorance, it is at such an amazing level it is higher than peak prices in Irvine and PHX combined. I think no_vas makes a great point, and you prove him correct.

P.S. Irvine, and all of OC is better than PHX whether you rent, own, or live on the streets like BK does. Oh... and how many homebuilders have gone BK in AZ?

Graphrix,

Any suggestion what tool I should get next that is more useful? May be I should fly over to Pheonix and pick up a chain saw. I will personally go clean up your garage and wipe up the pee. You are ruining the comp for your neighbors' properties.

I appreciate the fact that AZDave logged into the forums. I've been namedropping him here or there just to see if he ever shows up.

AZDave:

Personally... I don't really know you that well other than your Photoshop entries on the blog. While I do think your opinion is a bit skewed because you have not lived in Irvine (I assume), the same accusations you lay on bk you are also guilty of due to your generalizations of our "group" and the pictures you posts that are just as stereotypical as bk's comments.

I think the problem was that you made a very obvious effort to portray bk as a racist... even skirting racism yourself by calling him "Master". To those who frequent only the blog, this paints an unfair picture of bk because if you are a forum regular and have even read a handful of his posts... you can see that his categorizing of asian traits is sometimes exaggerated but done so to get across the differences of asian culture vs. non-asian culture. I think this may be lost on you because you live in an area that may not have a large asian population. Your examples of insulting Jews/whites doesn't really track here because the reality is... most ethnic groups will poke fun at themselves because they know them best. Do you think all those African American comics are racists when they make fun of their "brothers"? I think you are blurring the line between stereotypes and racism... one is based on generalization that have some form of truth behind it... the other is a feeling of superiority over or disdain for other races. Do you really think bk is in the latter category? Marketing and research does require information that many will deem stereotypical... but those notions exist for a reason. They are not totally correct... but there is some basis behind them or else they would never become stereotypes in the first place.

I generally agree with bk's comments... and living in Irvine for the last 20+ years whose asian population has grown each year gives me some experience in that matter. I don't always agree with bk and will point that out when I don't feel his asian philosophies are actually in sync with my observations (like this very thread and how asians don't really care about garages)... but to call his opinions racist is a very far stretch.

I actually think you were trying to be comical yourself but when called on it... you got defensive and what started as a joke turned into a serious discussion about racism and stereotypes. You can't believe that people still talk about it after a month or so? So do you think calling someone a racist isn't a serious accusation? That it should just go away? C'mon... you reap what you sow.

Graph and no_vas are less tolerant but I consider myself a bit more moderate. I welcome you to participate more in these forums on other topics but keep in mind that your viewpoints may differ widely from ours because you do not live here. But that's the good part... we do get another perspective... just as long as we recognize that fact.

And I wouldn't move to Arizona if they paid me either. Riverside alone is too inland for me... and I don't like the extremes between hot and cold over there (I had a friend who lived in AZ).

So tell us... what you do use your garage for?

All I have to say about this thread is that I sure hope my Asian wife does not come here and read this. As soon as she figures out how much us White folk like our garages, she is probably going to stop banishing me out there when I misbehave!

My ignorance to your blog and location is definitely unfortunate. Since, I have never interacted with you on the main blog nor have I heard of your blog or seen it cited anyplace, I sort of assumed that you were one of the no_vaseline clones. From my perspective, all I see is this little Napolean over on the forums who appears to have quite a bit to say.

The good news though is that we agree on a lot of things since you have apparantly been blogging for quite some time now and I am certainly glad about that. We most likely have much more in common than I initially gave you credit for.

Quite a few people like to bash the state of AZ as though it somehow bothers me. It is true that we live in neighborhoods of little miniature Biosphere2s. I like to go outside, but I have to wait until evening when the sun's death rays have declined to life sustaining levels. There is also a lot of dirt and rock. A sandstorm swept away my pet kitten when I was child and I cannot tell you how many martianlike boulders I have had to steer around when traversing the harsh landscape. All that aside, I have managed to learn to be happy with what I have even if it requires me to wear a space-suit to attend a picnic at the park.

My disgust with Arizona has nothing to do with AZDave. I just can't get over the fact their crappy football team has the nerve to hand a clipboard to a nice wholesome OC boy like Matt Leinart. Don't those Cardinals realize they will never have any success until they get an SC Trojan under center??!!

Look at poor Matt, imagine how miserable he is having been sentenced to a life in the desert....
