Veterans Cemetery coming to Irvine

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program

If the cemetery has been in the plans before any Beacon Park home was sold, and it still is, how are home values diminished?

it won't affect it until it's actually built out... but has already hindered sales volume.

Built out?  The article says that will take 100 years.

Is it not fitting that the GP neighborhood is District 4?  No idea how they are going to market that one.  Might get some white flight back in.

I talked to a mainlander in PP this weekend (well he's been in the US about 7 years), he says the big fear for him is not the proximity of the cemetery to PP/BP but rather that his child will have to sit in HS classes for 4 years that are so close to the evil spirits.  Thinks it will have some effect on his son's well being in the future or something.

I think this stuff is all over the place, ask 10 people get 10 different answers.

this is correct.. My MIL is big on Feng Shui.. and she doesn't care but says just be very respectful.

I think for most.. it's just the creep factor more than anything.

Well...in actuality, the evil spirits plume will originate in bp/pp but will eventually reside closer to Stonegate.  So it's THOSE residents that should be concerned.  ???

So is the fear that the cemetery will deter mainland China buyers and make home prices in BP more affordable?

I think it's more of a deflection. In other words, when folks argue against the cemetery with, "It hurts home values," what I hear is an insincere, "I'm not an irrational superstitious person, but I'm afraid of irrational superstitious folks who will tell me my home is worthless due to its proximity to a cemetery."

I don't think freedom loving people have anything to fear from the spirits of our vets.  Communists .... well, that's another matter.

Veterans Cemetery is not just another grave yard or Rose Hill with bunch of gigantic tombstones (you know if you been there recently in Chinese section. the tombstones are not flat lying on the ground.  They are erected, bigger in size, and some have big characters and pictures engraved).

As someone mentioned, the national cemetery in Westwood is an awesome sight (at least for me).  Arlington National Cemetery and the memorial sites in DC are great and beautiful.  Just checked the home values and available homes (some built in 1920s) for sale nearby Arlington and they are as expensive as Irvine homes.

These are sites for our troops and veterans, Americans (whether naturalized or native born) who paid ultimate sacrifice or served this country greatly.  I don't believe in ghosts, but if such exist, our veterans' spirits are certainly not evil ones to me.

I'll be more worried about living on a polluted soil than living next to what could be a national monument looking site.  It's just me.  Now it's different story if the builder and folks in charge of developing the cemetery cut corners, fail to make the appearance appealing and fail to provide sufficient parking spaces.  We shall see.

May be it's necessary for a long term controlled appreciation of home values in that area.  For those who know Feng Shui, how far does a home to be from a graveyard to be safe, 5, 10, or 50 miles?  Isn't entire Irvine and Mission Viejo within 10 mile radius?

Well just remember who voted against this swap next election cycle...

Why? What's gonna happen to Beacon Park residents now that a cemetery will be nearby?

Here are the Irvine council members:
Choi
Schott
Krom
Lalloway
Shea

After reading the article it seems that only Shea wants the graveyard swap.  However she did not vote.  If the graveyard swap is what the good people of Irvine want, then they should vote out everyone on the council except Shea.

Wait, who wants the swap? Who are the "good people of Irvine"?

Yikes, Perspective, you take everything so literally.  It's a figure of speech, just like the saying "the great state of California".  Learn to see the forest, not the trees.  Law school apparently didn't teach you that.

It just seems like the folks who don't want the cemetery near Beacon Park, refuse to explain why, and also suggest that everyone agrees with them that it's bad. That's all.

I don't care where the graveyard goes.  I argue for both sides if you read this entire 85+ pages.  But since both sides agree to move it south, then it probably should be moved south.  $500,000 seems like a small deterrent that can be worked through.

The proposed new site will be close to Los Olivos, Laguna Altura, and Hidden Canyon so this proposed change may just be trading one fight for another.

yes but they are not moving the site any more, aren't they?  I thought today's vote was done and they are keeping it next to Portola High School...

I believe so

I believe this was the correct decision. People in GP bought homes knowing that this was proposed, paid less for their homes, and saw an opportunity to move the site to increase property values for themselves. The new location did not make any sense. Everyone living in Irvine would be affected by this. As I also said: Broadcom would not want it there. If Feng Shui is such a big deal, imagine the potential for lost employees at their new main office. At the end of the day, it is a 50 billion dollar company bringing in 8,000 jobs to Irvine. Developers have their way.

The Vets deserve a cemetery and they are getting one at a perfectly good location that was agreed upon years ago. I'm glad the council saw through this.

The best of all this: Shea "countered claims that the land swap was really about the developer's profit margins. She said the site FivePoint is giving in exchange was worth more because the developer could sell it off to an organization for its international headquarters."

Wouldn't it be good to bring thousands more jobs to the most visible portion of Irvine where a company can bring in their international headquarters??? The Spectrum area, with the new dual business towers going up is the heart of business in Irvine. Having more land available for these business opportunities is great for everyone.

Keep the cemetery where it was originally supposed to be!

I still say it should go into Anaheim Hills.  So the Irvine voters are okay with putting up 100M for this?

So basically, the veterans deserve a cemetery.............. as long as it doesn't affect you.

P.S.  It's not just GP homeowners who are against the cemetery.  There are folks in WB, SG, CV, PS who are as well.
