Why not just put it smack in the middle of the Great Park.. would look way nicer.  But hey.. I'm not a Irvine City councilmen.
And make it 400 acres, a real Veteran Cemetery!

Let's supersize the cemetery. I propose razing all Irvine buildings/homes and making the entire city a cemetery. It will truly be America's Safest City since everyone is dead.

The cemetery will not happened. There will be the lack of funding to build it. This planted seed will never become a tree. The interested party is only interested in keeping the seed sprouting for several years. There is no intention in fully funding the cemetery to its completion.

Did you think the swap was going to happen?

The state legislature, CalVets, and the Federal government have put their backing behind it. Jerry Brown visited specifically for this. Why do you think it won't happen? It has support in every chamber, right now, it was just a dispute of where to put it (which never should have happened in the first place)

This may be the default benefit in reversing the white flight.

Kidding aside I thought the swap would be a slam dunk because its swap location is  environmentally far superior; the proposed swap location from the traffic standpoint not having to route commercial and maintenance traffic into a residential community. The location is high profile where the 405 meets the 5. From a zoning perspective its highly compatible to the industrial context, its easier to find and could potentially have its own freeway exit and on ramp. Its leaves less carbon footprints, less wear and tear to the city road infrastructure, and highly sustainable due to its lowest elevation where rain water migrate to and get harvested for watering all that lawn. All that water will  burden the storm drain and pollute the ocean.  The current proposed location has a 5% grade where water runoff is rapid and good luck in keeping the lawn green.

I really should have attended the city meeting because those superstitious Yaliu supporters just weren't savvy enough and convincing enough to argue for their cause. Because the city council don't want to deal with further feasibility studies and opted for the less ideal location sounded like they might have abused their authority and went against the wishes of the citizens who pay their salaries.

I am very surprised that this got denied. I can only guess some level of corruption must have occurred.

This will be a long term project that need a lot of donations and our government has no money for this. I just don't see this will ever materialize. Good luck in asking the voters for money.

That's where we disagree. The slam dunk location is where the first spot was chosen, well before the vast majority bought their homes. You can talk about run offs, zoning, and other things that can be resolved at the actual site, but the 405/5 location you're talking about is perfect for any business. Even if Broadcom is lowering its headcount, another international business can move their headquarters to the heart of OC/Irvine. Broadcom, if they choose, can expand. What if one of the high tech companies or multi-nationals want to move here? What if Blizzard wants to move to an even larger location, as they did once before? They have a perfect spot for their employees to travel to.

For all the complaining about over building, the one building Irvine would stand to benefit from is from more business buildings to bring as many jobs to the heart of Irvine. We all can see we have enough apartments. Why not make the jobs closer? The slam dunk location is the current one chosen two years ago.

Speaking to your corruption comment: maybe they just thought it was a poor choice (it is) and rejected the idea (it was). If something you believe should happen, doesn't happen, corruption is not the only answer.

What entity can silence four Irvine councilmembers? Who has more pull in Irvine than FP? That is why the swap was not given a fair hearing. Your relocation was determined to be rejected before the first word was spoken. Dead on arrival.

Describe what wasn't fair about the hearing.

Were I a council member, I would have allowed every swap supporter to speak and would ask each detailed questions. How fun would that be to hear the answers?

I've finally pieced it together. Now it all totally make sense. Beth Krom and Jeff Lalloway are actually working to scrap the veteran cemetery altogether.

By placing the cemetery in the center of a toxic site and right smack in the middle of the runway with storage buildings all around they've made the cost of the cemetery prohibitively high so the veterans would have no chance of coming up with the money. The proposed land swap would have thrown their plan into jeopardy so they had to immediately double down on the original site.

I must say it is a genius plan. They put the veterans in an impossible situation while extracting votes and donations from them for supporting their cause. Too bad the emergence of the alternative site and support from both sides of the issue exposed their real motive.

Mayoral candidate Gang Chen has threatened to mount a recall effort against four of the five Irvine City Council members after they rejected a proposal to change the site of a proposed veterans cemetery.
http://www.ocregister.com/articles/recall-712641-park-great.html

So now a recall to drive up property values? He says he doesn't care that there's a cemetery? Yes, I sure do believe someone fighting tooth and nail like this doesn't care. I'm SURE he only cares about the residents of GP, but not any other residents.

How is it fair to the people living in Quail Hill, Laguna Altura, etc that there will be a cemetery close to them? How about all of the residents driving through Irvine? The businesses? How about the will of the State legislature, CalVet, and the Federal government that approved this and put it through the State??

If anything, Chang cares only about himself and his property values. **Backroom deals with a developer to swap land is not right and will be fought hard as well.**

As a side note, his Mayoral site doesn't say anything about a Cemetery. Why? It's his #1 issue. Nothing else is. He's talking about a recall effort for a cemetery. Not for jobs, overbuilding, traffic, but for an already approved cemetery. This says a lot about him.
