Santiago Fire Update - Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007

All IUSD schools will be CLOSED Friday, Oct. 26 due to air quality concerns.

UPDATE: Smoke and ash caused by wildfires throughout the state have prompted IUSD and other school districts to make a number of operational modifications to ensure the safety of students and staff. Though Irvine Unified’s maintenance and operations team has done an incredible job to make sure that the air circulating through its facilities is as clean as possible, the district had been anticipating a break in the form of clearer skies by the end of this week.

Unfortunately, as of Thursday afternoon, relief had yet to come. Therefore, due to the lack of marked improvement in the county’s air quality, the decision has been made to close all district sites on Friday, Oct. 26.

Barring any unforeseen events, all IUSD schools will reopen on Monday, Oct. 29.

Meanwhile, indoor and outdoor athletics, extracurricular activities and co-curricular activities have been canceled through Sunday at all Orange County school districts. County Superintendent of Schools William M. Habermehl conducted a conference call on Thursday with the county’s 15 unified and high school district superintendents, who made the decision by consensus.

It is surprising thathey did not close the schools on monday and tuesday when the air quality was extremely bad.I think it is better compared to day 1 and 2 after the fire or they made the decision because of concerned parents.

Lambert Ranch: Turning of the land

By SONYA SMITH

THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

IRVINE ? One of the city's last chunks of ranch land will soon become homes.

The Lambert Ranch, a 51-acre piece of land just northeast of the future Great Park, has been used for farming for about 91 years. On Tuesday night the Irvine City Council unanimously voted to rezone it from agricultural to residential.

The Fujishige family owns 35 acres, and the Lambert family still owns the hillier portion. The main ranch house, built by Ray Lambert, will stay on the site, where his two daughters were born and still live.

The plot is small, but its location is huge ? surrounded by the Irvine Co.'s Portola Springs village, being built now, and just northeast of the future Great Park. Now the land will be sold, and homes will be built to blend in with Portola Springs.

But there's more to it than what is seen now ? an old ranch house, other farm buildings and 35 acres of strawberry fields. Ray C. Lambert was born in 1888 in San Luis Obispo. His father, Charles, moved the family to Tustin in 1890 to start an earth-grading business.

Ray graduated from Santa Ana High School and after several years in the nursery business started negotiating for 160 acres in north Irvine. He bought 51 acres for $4,000 from the Irvine Co. in 1915; the deal was officially recorded in 1925.

Lambert became known for growing Valencia oranges and was general manager of the Irvine Ranch farmlands. By the 1930s, Lambert bought other areas of fruit ranches and orange groves throughout the county.

He died in 1976, and his wife, Clara, followed in 1983. Since then, his daughters Barbara and Lucille have maintained the ranch. They sold the lower and flatter part of the ranch in the 1990s to the Fujishige family. That family has continued to farm and grows strawberries.

Things changed in 2004. The sisters heard of the Irvine Co.'s Portola Springs development through public notices. The development surrounds the ranch, and the first model homes opened in August.

"It became obvious to the families that they weren't going to be in a secluded area for very much longer and the ability to farm is becoming more difficult," said Pam Sapetto, a principal with the Sapetto Group, which the families contacted to help sell the land.

Now that the zoning and development plans are approved, the families will seek a bidder for the land. Before development begins, photographs and a history of the site will be compiled and given to the Irvine Ranch Historical Society and the South Central Coastal Information Center at Cal State Fullerton.

The ranch house and the small hill it sits on will stay mostly untouched.

Note: The Lambert sisters did not want to comment for this article. Information on the ranch's history came from a historical study of the ranch for the environmental impact report. The information came from written records and an interview with Barbara Tucker, one of Ray C. Lambert's daughters.

The city should declare that house a historical landmark. I can just imagine how nice it must have been back in the days when the city was in non-existent.

Found this link about how to clean up properly after smoke damage. Some things I wouldn't have even thought of, hope it helps someone.

So far I know of 7 people who have donated to the Red Cross. All we need are 3 more people to donate $25 each and the Red Cross will get an extra $350 from me and EvaL. If you want to you can whisper a comment to either myself or EvaL if you don't want to post for everyone to see.

It's only $25 and sadly I probably spend that or more on coffee every week.

Wow, did those firefighters do an awesome job or what ! Look at those neighborhoods right at the fire line....how close it got to them...

Here is the site that lists the various Red Cross funds in case anyone else would like to donate. If you want to keep it going and we get 10 more people I will add an additional $50.
