Retail Openings and Closures

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
All the food have the same taste, luckily it's a taste I like, but like above only when I use a BOGO coupon, otherwise PeiWei is not worth it.

Right now I'm really fond of Chinez on Alton, tad expensive, but quality is pretty decent.  When I want my Americanized Chinese food fix.

Golden Spoon @ Orchard Hills (http://www.yelp.com/biz/golden-spoon-irvine) mall has bit the dust. I tried to stop by with my kids and the place was dark. The workers @ Peet's Coffee mentioned they closed 2-3 weeks ago. Something about the initial lease rates were subsidized/low and the owner couldn't afford the new rates. The whole mall is struggling given the significant delay in OH homes being built.

Never noticed a golden spoon there, the one near Trader Joes on Culver and Walnut seems busy whenever I pass by.  That orchard hills mall is pretty dead, I visit for McDonald's fix, the Pavilions have alot of "managers specials", and who shops at Chicos?

I read somewhere that Golden Spoon is remodeling one of their stores to a serve-yourself model. Unlike Yogurtland and the others, it charges by cup size... so all the yogurt and toppings you can fit into that cup.

@PS9 - you must not have passed through there in a while, the golden spoon is also closed.

Really?  I shop at Trader Joe's at least once a week.. last time I was picking up some Curry House, the Golden Spoon was packed.. couldn't have been more then 2-3 weeks ago..

The stores @ OH mall that appear to do well: McDonalds, Chevron, Peet's Coffee, Zovs, and La Sirena Grill. Not sure of the Bellagio Spa or nail place since I never frequent those establishments.

Does anyone know what the new building is in Von Karman Plaza that is being built in front of the soon-to-be Walmart?  It looks like it could be a restaurant.  Not that it matters, but I was bummed when the Burger King closed.

Looks like fast food instead of restaurant.. saw the drive thru windows :) as for the former Burger King site, I believe another Chase bank is going there (with drive thru as well)..

As for the Walmart, it's gonna be a supercenter for one stop shop...opening date is now in 2013?  per this article..

The Mokkoji Shabu Shabu Bar at Cypress Village opened up recently.  Tried it - not bad.  The ingredients are very fresh.  Had the beef, shrimp and scallops.  Liked their dipping sauces.  Also tried their roasted rice cake app which was good.  They finish off your shabu shabu with either a squid ink porridge or a carrot/onion porridge cooked in your leftover broth.  Service was pretty solid.  Only downside is price.  I think their portions (esp the veggies/udon/tofu that comes with it) were a bit small given pricing.  Hope they do well.

Do they have table seating yet?  Last time I checked it was all bar seating...

Yes - they have a 4 top and a 6 top I believe.  The other smaller tables didn't look quite ready yet.  They also have an area of the bar that was lower (2-4 seats?) which is probably more kid friendly.

Tried Mokkoji for the first time, it was decent, went for lunch and had the share plate for $25.  My wife and I were both pretty full afterwards.  Flavor is heavier, I believe they are korean owned.  The squid ink rice thing in the end was just ok with me.. too much carrot flavor.  They have Sapporo draft and a pitcher I believe is less than $10.  Will go back but I still like SWSH better.  Mokkoji is cheaper though with the shared plate.

Pasta Pomodoro in Oak Creek is closing (or is closed). Just got the email today.

Too bad... we need Italian places in Irvine not named Olive Garden.

Ate at Macaroni grill last night, haven't been there for at least 3 years, probably won't go back for another 3, bad service, expensive, subpar food, only the bread is good

Looks like Kickin Crab will take over Itriya in DJ.  They have outside seating, get ready for a swarm of flies over your Cajun seafood.

Is that the same one as the one near South Coast where Boiling Crab opened up right next to them?

Also... The Habit, a burgers place, is opening where the Burger King was in Heritage Plaza on the corner of Walnut and Culver. I've been to The Habit in Lake Forest, it's pretty good... but I would have preferred a Tommy's.
