President Trump

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program

Trump wanted tanks and military vehicles at his inauguration. He wants to dramatically increase the military industrial complex budget. He's itchin' to prove he's not soft like Obama.

Peace through strength.

Obama made several blunders because he listened to the Neocons (Hillary) about invading Libya, a nation that was cooperating with us on nukes.  Then after getting burned by the Neocons, he refused to do anything sensible in Syria allowing ISIS to catch him completely off guard (the JV team), and allowing Assad to use chemical weapons without fear of retribution.  Russia was also able to capitalize on Obama's all talk, no action, foreign policy by annexing Crimea.  Meanwhile, while Obama was negotiating with Iran, nobody thought to contain North Korea's nuclear program.

Are there any foreign policy successes that Obama can brag about?  Normalizing relations with the brutal dictatorship in Cuba?

His highest achievement in terms of foreign policy has been stemming the bleeding both in lives and treasury in US engagements around the world. I know it doesn't sound like much to brag about but resources need to match the goals. This is a consideration that that got lost in Afghanistan and Iraq.

In terms of his foreign policy he has definitely been right of center.

Would love to ask this guy some questions: What did you hear in all of Trump's conflicting promises? What did you think he was going to do for you? What made you think he could deliver on these promises? What made you so enthusiastic about this candidate to travel with him like a 20-year old band groupie?

This is a fair point and I supported him in both endeavors.  I just feel like he didn't have a comprehensive foreign policy agenda beyond that.  Everything felt ad hoc in his dealings with other countries.

Granted, that was still preferable to Bush's blundering decisions to shoot first and aim later.

Comparing Trump to Carter. Ouch.

Trump realizes he shouldn't have written Democrats off ? but he's already screwed himselfhttps://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/trump-realizes-shouldnt-written-democrats-215130141.html

President Donald Trump seems to be realizing, belatedly, that writing Democrats off put him at the mercy of Republicans in Congress. If he can't get nearly all Republicans to agree on something, he can't have it.

Despite being an alleged dealmaking expert, he put himself in quite a weak negotiating position, which is sad!

So Trump is talking up his desire to deal with Democrats on healthcare and infrastructure, giving him an additional possible counterparty if Freedom Caucus Republicans won't play ball.

But I don't think Trump has realized how much he'd have to give up, policy-wise, to make Democrats willing to work with him. Democratic voters hate Trump. If Democrats are going to cut deals with him, they're going to have to be confident they can go home and show their voters they got the best of the negotiation.

And he definitely hasn't realized that being a jerk makes it harder to get both Republicans and Democrats to do what he wants.
...
Ross Douthat and Corey Robin have both written about a Jimmy Carter model for the Trump presidency: As under Carter, high hopes for a swamp-draining presidency give way to a breakdown in relations between Congress and a high-handed president of the same party who diverges in key ways from the party's mainstream.

In this analogy, Trump is Carter, only angrier, dimmer, less popular, much more out of his depth, and lacking in moral authority.

It's all a recipe for an administration that makes a lot of noise but generates very few policy accomplishments.

Sad!

Perspective, that article is premised on a strawman.  I'd have thought somebody with your intense focus on logical biases would have recognized that.

It seems like his posts lately are:
- 25% reasonable logical posts
- 75% I hate trump personal blog

It might be closer to 50/50, but it feels like 25/75.

I just link to interesting articles relevant to the thread. It doesn't mean I necessarily agree with every argument, the logic, or the conclusion.

I usually post an article in support of some point I want to make, not just to throw it out there for comment

Cool. I'm posting articles relevant to the thread's topic, that I find interesting. If it's from The Economist, you can assume I support the argument, logic, and conclusion. If not, take it for what it's worth. Critique it if you think it's using a failed premise, bad logic, or reaching the wrong conclusion. That's why folks click on these links, no? You can also skip right on past any link and never click on it. No biggie.

I don't visit most of the threads on TI because I'm not interested in the topic. Presumably, if you click on a thread titled "President Trump," you're interested in reading about President Trump.

Please, post positive comments, opinions, and articles related to Trump here. It's relevant. If I disagree with the comment, opinion, or article, I might share why.

More on how we measure employment, and no, the unemployment rate isn't phony:

The unemployment rate isn't phony, but many people believe the methodology is flawed.  It became trendy for bloggers to call the numbers phony during the downturn, and Trump latched on to that rhetoric because it was effective in conveying the message that government stats can't always be trusted.

You are missing the point. Its not about the specific numbers, its the change in attitude which establishes a new tactical and strategic reaction to the coming reality.  You think just one job would stay if Hillary had won?  Not a chance...the trend has begun and he's not even in office yet...the trend is your friend!

Words are a powerful thing. Words have changed how companies have reacted to the new reality. Even though he has not changed much yet policy wise just the words he uses has changed our reality.  Just put out the "not welcome" sign and look what happens...wall or no wall.

Private Sector Reports Stronger-Than-Expected Boost to Payrolls in March
Private payrolls across the nation rose by 263,000 last month

?The gains are broad based but most notable in the goods producing side of the economy including construction, manufacturing and mining,? said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody?s Analytics.

Goods-producing industries, which include construction and manufacturing, added 82,000 jobs. Meanwhile, service-providing sectors such as hospitality added 181,000 jobs in March.

Border apprehensions hit 17-year low in March

The number of unaccompanied minors and family units who were taken into custody on land dropped sharply to 18,762 in February, the first full month of President Trump's administration, which Kelly said was a sign of decreased traffic of illegal immigrants. A total 23,589 illegal immigrants were detained in February including ports of entry near the southern border. It's unclear whether the 12,500 figure for March includes ports of entry numbers.

Last month, Kelly said the "unprecedented" drop from 31,578 apprehensions in January reflects a reduced flow of illegal immigrants, and indicates Trump's policies and executive actions on immigration - calling for a new border wall and follow-through of all immigration laws? are already causing some to stop before coming.

Again, this is why so many will never get what happened.  We live within the echo chamber that only reflects back what some want to hear.  As I pointed out during the election..get out of here a bit and listen to the rest of the country.  Cali is its own Berlin.

How Trump supporters survive in blue California: 'You kind of keep your head down'

It?s not easy being a Republican in California, where the Grand Old Party could soon join the Yosemite toad and Mohave ground squirrel on the list of threatened species. It?s harder still being a Republican in left-leaning strongholds such as Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area.

But it?s hardest of all living in those blue bulwarks and supporting President Trump.

Living behind the Blue Curtain requires certain survival skills, backers of the president say. No bumper stickers, lest someone key your car. No signs, in the window or planted on your front lawn, to prevent vandalism. Steer clear of Facebook and other online forums, and don?t discuss politics in the real world if you can help it.
