Midterm Elections

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
I'll take a shot at this. Her comments (tweets) were racist. The question remains, how racist were they? The context and her history suggest they weren't very high on the racist scale.

So, Dave Chappelle making stereotypical jokes about black folks ranks very low on the scale - maybe lower than 1.

Alt-Right Trump cultists marching through Charlettesville chanting "Jews will not replace us!" ranks the highest - 10.

Trump publicly defending said marchers as "very fine people" ranks around 9.

So, back to this NYT columnist, her comments probably rank in the 1-2 range for me. She should be shamed. She should apologize.

Racism is like pornography

You know it when you see it

Trump fans ? argue here all you want to keep up appearances that you are defending your turf , but in your minds you know it too .

If she was white and said them about Asians what would it rank?

Fair question, but the context gets twisted a bit:

"Oh man, it's kind of sick how much joy I get out of being cruel to old [Asian] men."

"[Asian] people marking up the internet with their opinions like dogs pissing on fire hydrants."

"Cancel [Asian] people."

So, it sounds slightly more racist, but also kind of odd. I guess we'd have to assume a large group of predominantly Asian folks were upsetting her, and she went after them grouping them by their race.

Based on your scale, I would give Harvard's admissions office an 11 for keeping Asians down.

all of those statements are racist no matter what race you substitute.  all of those years fighting for equality for all doesn't mean the pendulum swings the other way and some are now more equal than others.

Agreed. Harvard is treating Asians differently, for very subjective reasons, and harming many qualified students by not admitting them.

Harvard also has a legacy admission problem too - affirmative action for rich white folks.

That network should be shamed for hiring her for the show after years of Alt-Right nonsense. Context matters. Are you equating Roseanne's history and racist joke with this NYT's comments?

racism is racism. you're welcome to rank these instances if you'd like.
"But when people decide to let racism slide, it costs the rest of us."

btw, the failing nytimes removed this quote from their roseanne article after people started linking to it calling them hypocrites. hilarious

The most intersting quote is Cabrera
But Cabrera said the idea was ?a complete false equivalence,? noting that whiteness isn?t a cultural identity the way being black, Japanese American or Jewish is. Cabrera listed off examples of government policies that targeted various racial groups, including the Chinese Exclusion Act and Operation Wetback, calling racism a ?systemic reality? that necessarily favors white people.

?You hear that all the time: substitute white and put in minority group x,? he said. ?The term racism is not the equivalence of prejudice or bigotry. It?s an analysis of social inequality along the color lines and an analysis of power dynamics and social oppression. None of which has ever been in the hands of people of color or communities of color: there?s never been the social structure to be able to oppress white people.?

Sorry, but that's just obviously false to all reasonable people. Not all racism is the same.

I never read the NYT, but I hear they're doing very well since Trump's election.

You should read the NYT. It's quite entertaining. Here's a recent NYT op ed praising Karl Marx and noting Marxism's continued relevance to modern American social justice movements:
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/30/opinion/karl-marx-at-200-influence.html

"Marx, as I have said, does not offer a one-size-fits-all formula for enacting social change. But he does offer a powerful intellectual acid test for that change. On that basis, we are destined to keep citing him and testing his ideas until the kind of society that he struggled to bring about, and that increasing numbers of us now desire, is finally realized."

Communism, it's as American as apple pie! Thanks NYT!

In the current trade war, its no secret whose side, Supreme Leader Xi or President Trump, the NYT is on.

So, analyze this for us. What about this article is bad or wrong, and why?

He will not analyze it . The point is not to think or analyze . He probably saw a large red banner headline on the nutjob cespoool sites screaming ?nyt liberals love communism ? and pasted it here .

The ultimate end point of this conversation will be a cartoonish or derogatory gif and we will move on :)

My challenge stands ? anyone here , paste ONE , Just one piece of in depth reporting by any of the right wing outlets that comes even close in analysis , citing of evidence and proof to NYT / WSJ / WaPo . I am not talking about the opinion pieces , which are , you know , opinion .

Right wingers have been screaming about emails till they are hoarse ? but they conveniently ignore the fact that it was the NEW YORK TIMES that actually broke that story about Clinton after months of investigative work .

So yes , next time you can thank the New York Times for your tax cuts and stock market gains (if  you believe so) by purchasing a subscription .

Now how is that for logic ?  : )

What do you call giving farmers $12 billion in aid? (Not because of bad weather, bugs, or any other issues.) Capitalism or Socialism?
