Senate blocks ZTE deal in rebuke of Trump deal

?In a major rebuke to President Donald Trump, the Senate has adopted a measure that would block the administration's deal with Chinese telecom giant ZTE, pitting the president against Congress on what many senators say is an issue of national security.

The Senate's move comes less than a week after the administration struck an agreement with ZTE that would have kept the telecom company engaged in the U.S. market.

The telecom company is considered by the intelligence community to be a mechanism for espionage by, in part, selling phones in the U.S. that can be tracked and enabled to steal intellectual property.

The NDAA still has to pass the Senate and the House of Representatives must still agree to the defense bill with the measure included before it can advance. The president would then face a choice: Veto a critical defense bill to save the ZTE deal or allow the administration's deal to collapse. Sen. Cotton said the president won?t veto the bill ?because the bill pertains many other critical priorities.?

Unbelievable

WASHINGTON ? President Trump?s pledge on Tuesday to cancel military exercises on the Korean Peninsula surprised not only allies in South Korea but also the Pentagon.

Hours after Mr. Trump?s announcement in Singapore, American troops in Seoul said they are still moving ahead with a military exercise this fall ? Ulchi Freedom Guardian ? until they receive guidance otherwise from the chain of command.

Lt. Col. Jennifer Lovett, a United States military spokeswoman in South Korea, said in an email that the American command there ?has received no updated guidance on execution or cessation of training exercises ? to include this fall?s schedule Ulchi Freedom Guardian.?

?We will continue with our current military posture until we receive updated guidance from the Department of Defense,? she added.

Shep Smith: Trump gave Kim everything he wanted, and got nothing in return

?Fox News host Shepard Smith tore into President Trump over the North Korea summit on Tuesday, saying the president gave Kim Jong Un everything he wanted, without getting anything in return.

Smith lamented that the agreement signed by Trump and Kim at the historic summit did not contain language guaranteeing ?complete, verifiable, irreversible? denuclearization by North Korea.?

Your consistency is noteworthy.  How surprising that you did not comment on how "ignorant" President Trump is.

Leftists are ALWAYS telling everyone else how smart THEY are and how STUPID the people they hate are.  It is their ultimate argument, and it fails miserably for several reasons.

Well, Trump secured the release of 3 hostages.  That's something.  He also got NK to start dismantling their nuclear test sight.  That's something else.

On the other hand, Kim hasn't gotten very much in return.  He got to raise his profile on the world stage, for whatever that's worth.  Not much when you consider his notoriety as a ruthless dictator.  Trump could pull the rug on Kim at any moment.

Kim also got Trump to suspend war games training during negotiations.  This is entirely reversible and provides added leverage for the US during negotiations.  Trump has already shown he will reverse positions quickly if you try to stab him in the back.  This historic summit was almost cancelled for that very reason.  The G-7 also got a taste of it when Trudeau thought he could gain the political upper hand by bashing America after the agreement got drafted.  Whoops!  Trump refused to sign on after that, weakening the agreement.

Lastly, I would ask did anybody really believe this summit was the end of negotiations?  It's really just the beginning.  Trump and Kim are participating in a bunch of goodwill gestures, handshakes, photo ops, and a signed document framing their shared desire to reach denuclearization.  It's not a binding contract, just a statement of intent.  There are many more steps in this process and the real grunt work will be handled by Pompeo and his NK counterpart as they negotiate in the coming months over how this will actually play out.

Trump basically bought into NK's "ransom" demands.  The nuclear site was already dismantled because the site had collapsed and was unusable.

Trump sold out SK for no real reason and now China/NK are loving life.  China already starting to ease "sanctions" and asking for others to do the same.

Suspending war games == selling out SK? Or are you referring to something else?

There has to be some give and take, glad Trump is giving on something like war games. It also fits in with his goals to reduce US military presence/spending abroad. I'm sure Trump would love to see Japan and SK take up the military role the US has been playing in the region. SK may want that outcome as well (many in Japan certainly do).

Whether this is a good or bad thing is up for debate. Depends on how much you weight  the military's role in the US hegemony, or even believe in maintaining that hegemonic power. It may be time to cede our military presence to allies in the region.

Nature abhors a vacuum.  If US pulls out of Asia...China steps in.  The biggest winner in the whole thing is China.  It's not a zero sum game.

@ Starman, you have military background. What do you think about the POTUS reciprocal salute to adversary general?

Don't add any 'sic', comment to my question.

Not necessarily disagreeing here, but I don't think stopping war games itself will lead to that vacuum. It is a step in that direction potentially though.

Would China, SK, and Japan filling that void would be such a bad thing? Shouldn't they be the most powerful presence in their own hood? It is a lot more expensive for us to project power there than it is for China. Whether that expense is worth it is probably up for debate. Also, China isn't projecting power off our coast, why should we off theirs?

I don't have faith that Trump knows what he is doing here, but if he is able to pull off a pivot to Asia centered around empowering China, SK, and Japan, while making China a great ally, it could be a nice outcome. China and the US are already the worlds best economic partners, it would be great to have us also be similarly strong geopolitical allies. Not an easy task, but I think fundamentally the US and China are better suited as allies than enemies. Our economic ties are already leading us down this path, but as WW1 showed this isn't a sure thing.

Imagine the US and China as two superpower allies, who could stop us? We'd bulldoze through everyone assuming we don't fight each other. Figuratively bulldoze of course.

China does not want to be US ally.  That's not how the CCP thinks.  They want to take over.  China still consider itself as the "Middle Kingdom".

Japan is not allowed to have a military by law and SK can't take on China.  US projection of power is not just about military might.  It's about securing stability in a region and have allies that take our side rather than China or Russia side.

Stopping the war game is an unnecessary give away that NK didn't need to get.    People keeps talking about how the relations is better since last year...yeah because Trump basically threatened to invade NK.  It was a crisis of his own making.

NK is now more dependent on China more than ever.  China already "easing" sanctions and playing big brother for NK.

Even if you believe that Trump knows what he is doing...he has a "business person" POV where every party wants to get a deal down.  In politics, doing a deal is not always the end game.
