Lakers were not going to contend but missing the playoffs and going into the lottery is a disaster. Basically the best year of Lebron as a Laker wasted...he can only go down from here. Now with all the drama, who is going to come to the Lakers?
FO messed this up failing to trade for PG-13 (for either Ingram or the no. 2 pick)...then they didn't get Leonard (but honestly I doubted SA would have trade him to the Lakers). Then they let Lebron dictate the FA pickups rather than picking up better players. It's a mess all the way around.
I guess this is where we disagree. I feel the team has underperformed but is far from a disaster especially considering we are now in position to get a top 10 pick.
To me this would have been a disaster if they traded all their young players for Davis. Lebron + Davis + 3 replacement level players is not a title contender even if KD leaves Golden state. You need depth to win championship in this league.
It also would have been a disaster if Lebron played top minutes just to get the 8th seed and gets seriously injured. This was what happened to Kobe 2013 and effectively ended his career. Nobody will think back and remember it as the season Lakers squeezed into the playoff. It will always be remembered as the season that ended Kobe?s career.
To your point, Lebron?s 1st Laker year was already going to be wasted the minute he decided to come to a rebuilding team. I think only delusional Laker fans believe a deep playoff run was possible in year 1. Vegas had Lakers pegged as an 8th seed with 45% chance to make the playoff before the season started. Getting a top 10 pick for year 1 is way better than getting blown out in the first round.
Pop was never going to trade Kawai to the Lakers. I am more torn on PG-13 decision because he would have been cheaper to trade for compared to Davis. But Lakers do not have enough assets to trade for both. They gambled on PG-13 coming as a FA and lost but I understand the rationale. You save all your chips for the best player available and that?s Davis.
I think it?s premature to think no top FAs will come to the Lakers. Most top FA chases $$$
