Homeless camps coming to Irvine

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program

There are lot of people on the tent city who work in social services who are against this.  It is easy to say NIMBYism and there are definitely a few people who have some pretty horrible views and show no compassion.  This was done quickly without thought and the county gov is just moving the people around from riverbed to motels to tent city.  That isn't a solution.  Rebuilding the riverbed in Irvine or any city makes no sense.

And people suggesting messaging is because you have crazy people who make everyone look bad.  Some dude posted that we should send all the homeless people to Afghanistan FFS.

It?s not easy to say it?s NIMBY. It IS NIMBY.  No one gave two shats about this problem before it landed in their backyard.  Even if this was a well thought out shelter on the 100 acres with structures, plumbing, social services, etc, there would still be a lot of opposition to it. The tent situation just gave everyone a convenient excuse.

Read the FB group closely.  There are entire threads dedicated to figuring out a SOLUTION to this vs just saying "NOT HERE".  Yes a lot of people deal with issues when it lands at their doorstep.  Most of the time, its very clearly NIMBYism but in that FB group, there is a lot of talk about how this is an OC wide issue and how to help and not just say not here.

The way you make it sound, everyone is just pointing and saying not here when that isnt the case at all.  There are people in that group who are regularly involved in social services and understand the challenges first hand.
And yes there are folks that are clearly against any form of help and 100% NIMBY but I don't think it is fair to paint the entire group opposed to this site with that broad brush.

Not on FB so i?ll have to take your word on how this is not NIMBY. You let me know many GP/surroundings GP residents stick around to help find a solution if and when the Sups move the homeless situation elsewhere :)

There is also a lot of discussion that make it sound like the riverbed camp situation will be exactly reproduced in Irvine. Last time I checked the riverbed camp was not managed by the county or any other organisation.

It's not because there is currently no electricity or running water on the 100 acres that by the time the camp is built there won't be. Or because the unauthorized camp was really bad that the new planned and managed one will be.

I left the FB group a few days ago already because getting flooded by 200% crime increase, needles in the kids park sandbox and the potential wave of rapists poring on Irvine grew old real fast.

Maybe I am naive but I think a lot of people are much more aware of homelessness and how bad it has gotten than they ever have been.  People have posted links to documentaries, books, etc.  People are suggesting solutions and how just moving to another city in OC will not solve it and all the cities in OC have to come together to help figure this out.  I rather be part of that discussion and help steer the NIMBY folks to at least understand the greater issues.

In the end, $ talks and so probably something will happen in chambers that moves this somewhere else, we?ll find out soon enough.

Right on!

If we put all the fear aside for a moment and think logically as who has what stakes, I guess it can calm some nerves.

1. 5P has $1B worth of homes to sell in Cadence Park alone.
2. Great park development is said to cost a billion.
3. TIC has Travata right next to the site. Those homes cost million a piece or more, multiply it by number of homes in that community.
4. TIC apartments right next to Bus Depot on Sand Canyon.
5. TIC has much more at stake than 5P, pretty much entire city. They sell and rent at a premium, residential and commercial, in small part because of the image of Irvine as kinda elite, white-collar neighborhood.
5. City is sitting on a pile of cash to put up a fight.

In the end $ talks and everyone listens. You think all those people who are sloshing millions and billions are just absent from the topic? I bet they are invisible, not absent.

So are you going to post the video?  ;)

For a city population of 266,000+ and all the infuriating noise generated, the protest turnout today was abysmal. I would say 500-600 tops. Probably the same folks who showed up at the city council.

The demographics predominantly appears to be GP residents.

?Dr. Drew Warns of Plague Threat from Los Angeles Homeless

Will LA get the Plague from homeless people living in squalid encampments the city is unable, or unwilling, to remove?
Dr. Drew thinks so? and on his KABC Radio show warned LA City Councilman Mitch Englander that there?s going to be an outbreak of something like the plague.

?There?s going to be, Mitch?there?s going to be an outbreak of something like the plague?some rodent-borne either rickettsial like typhus?or plague. We?ve had the hepatitis A outbreak?next is typhus or plague.?

Source:http://drdrew.com/2018/dr-drew-warns-plague-threat-los-angeles-homeless/

?The plague bacteria can be transmitted to humans in the following ways: Flea bites. Plague bacteria are most often transmitted by the bite of an infected flea. During plague epizootics, many rodents die, causing hungry fleas to seek other sources of blood.?

My comment: Let?s help before there is a potential big problem.

That's not how it works.

Lets do a little thought experiment.

Lets talk about the guy above.  Lets say he doesnt really want to be tied down with the responsibilities of a job and doesnt really want to stop drinking.

Whats the plan?

I'll be generous, I'll even go with not wanting a job is because of the drinking.  I'll even go with the drinking is because of something else.

But lets stick with he doesnt want to address the something else and just wants to self medicate.

What is the plan?

Why wouldn't they just take all that money and invest it in a good shelter/low income housing outside of Irvine.  Just set up some sort of charity...buy some land in Riverside and move everyone there.
