Homeless camps coming to Irvine

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program

For a city population of 266,000+ and all the infuriating noise generated, the protest turnout today was abysmal. I would say 500-600 tops. Probably the same folks who showed up at the city council.

The demographics predominantly appears to be GP residents.

Big one is on Tuesday

Still surprised that wealthy, educated people can be so ignorant and complacent.

Talked to a few people about the tent city at Cadence Park grand opening.  Here are the responses:
Person 1: Oh I heard some breaking news it?s on hold now, mayor issued a statement on city website.
Person 2: Doubt this will ever happen, come on this is Irvine.
Person 3: I?m sure city officials will handle it, county is just trying this to say they did something about it but everyone knows it?s not going happen.

Meanwhile, the violinist is playing as homebuyers munch on their homemade pop tarts and sip on the complimentary espresso.

Wake Up People!

Count me as one of the ignorant and complacent people.  Between your three comments, the protests by Irvine residents, Five Points which sees this affecting their interests, and Irvine Company which also sees this as affecting their interests to the south; do you really believe the county land next to the Great Park will end up housing homeless?

Yes, quite possibly.  You think Irvine Company is worried?  Half of me thinks they?re celebrating over the fact that Fivepoint will be the ones getting screwed here, and they?re willing to sacrifice Travata for the ?greater good?.

County would love to stick it to the city, after they sued OC to not allow them to profit from their 100 acre parcel last year.  I?ve always liked the quote ?all it takes for evil to succeed is for good people to do nothing?, and it?s paralleled here.  I realize that nobody west of Jeffrey really gives a crap about this, I can even read the city councils mind as they speak... ?I live in Woodbridge and the other board members are in the Turtles, who let these Northeast Irvine residents into the city council meeting?. So thank goodness GP/CV/WB/PS residents are at least showing some courage here cuz i know Northpark/Northwood/Shady/Quail Hill/ and all of West Irvine peeps could care less.

In the end, $ talks and so probably something will happen in chambers that moves this somewhere else, we?ll find out soon enough.

The City Council will soon care about the wildlings east of Jeffrey....winter is coming!

Burn That Belly irvinehomeowner , you seem mildly entertained by this entire situation. Do you not live in Irvine?

I don't mind ghosts or homeless.

Why does everyone think it's going to be a camp full of tents like BTB is posting? From what I understand it's an indoor facility that will be managed by a staff... so no open campfires, no rampant trash... just trying to help people who are in need.

Do I think this will go through? I doubt it considering the strength of NIMBY in Irvine. Once the telegrams get overseas... every cousin of every FCB will be protesting this.

But I do think we need to take care of the homeless in some fashion... that's why I suggested the hangars in Tustin Legacy. They are building the new OC animal shelter nearby and you know the homeless love pets... win win.

(okay... I'm being a little facetious)

The Supervisor drama is ramping up. From the Voice of OC:
Supervisor Nelson: "said the county would not allow illegal drug use or sex offenders at the proposed Irvine site. ?You can?t be shooting up in a county facility, you can?t have sex offenders. None of those things are true,? Nelson said. ?I?m just saddened that the demagoguery has been allowed to get this out of hand.? Regarding Spitzer, Nelson added: ?Everyone paying attention knows what the purpose is. He?s just trying to inflame people because he?s losing in the polls, and he?s trying to be DA.?

Chairmain Do: "The experience that we went through with the 750 residents so far from the [Santa Ana] riverbed in terms of minimal impact on neighborhoods shows that a lot of Irvine's complaints are crying wolf and fear mongering by Spitzer, who promised to clear out the 1,400 homeless in the riverbed within 30 days without any plans to [house] or treat them,? Do wrote in a text message Saturday night to Voice of OC.

I guess the GP residents are glad there's no retail right now :P.

Signs of successful assimilation:
* Acquiring NIMBY attitude
* Justifying winner takes all in socioeconomic status
* Getting fat

Wow you are totally sounding like BTB. Spittin' the same rhymes. What happened.

My wife accuses me of having YF.  I guess it was inevitable.

First, the issues of relocating them to Irvine is real. The SB 2 clause stated that, that piece of land is designated as Emergency Shelter for the homeless. So what constitute Emergency Shelter? Is it some natural disaster taken place that people have no other place to go to? If county official put up tents, it seem to me like they would intend to house the homeless at the location, not because an emergency occurred, but to keep homeless there.

Second that piece of land is county land and Irvine PD has no jurisdiction over it. Crimes and criminal activities could taken place and IPD cant stop it because now OC sheriff has to step in. Who going to patrol and secure that area?

They put up tents and what next? They will put up portable generator, porta potty and  what else.

Supervisors that voted for these sites now say they recinded their votes for the three and put it only at Irvine.

I am glad there is a turn out and tomorrow will be crucial, but if the decisions are made, it already made and tomorrow is the result of that decision will be made public.

Let me think about this:

San Diego homeless encampment downtown, Hepatitis A outbreak.
Los Angeles homeless crowd, hepatitis A outbreak believe brought up from San Diego.
Orange County encampment, over 4000 needles, 10,000 plus stolen bikes, several tonnes of human feces, and numerous complaints of threats, crime and vandalism by the neighboring residential areas.

Pretty much sounds like a standing emergency situation if not addressed.

It's pretty simple, a group of humans without proper sanitation becomes an emergency situation in a hurry, particularly if that group tends to have other high risk issues like drug use.
