Just got curious suddenly. If N95 or + masks are the only ones effective, how come people at the congress or even people you see on TV like Dr. Fauci himself is not wearing those? They're all wearing either the thin cheap ones or some fabric fashion clothes stuff. Anyone thought this odd?  ???

Really?

Oh, I just saw this. So he's wearing a thin one inside and the fashion cloth one on top of that? Does that make it N95?

The inner one is N95.

I think everyone sort of must wear masks now whether you believe it protects you or not.

That's N95 inside? It could be, but it could be something else. The proper N95 looks more like this.

This is what the thread has become. We are now debating about N95 mask. lol

Is everything ok with your relative? (I think that is your relative) When I see your screen name I remember the story you told us about the person that passed due to covid and that she had a daughter. I hope everything turned out okay?

Even sadder... the daughter had to move out of state to live with an uncle she barely knows.

Her family in-state are unable to take care of her so not only did she lose her mom but is now in a situation where she has no friends and family she has little relationship with.

The other sad thing is the mom is an essential worker, so she was just about a month away from getting the vaccine that could have helped prevent this.

Covid does more than just kill people, it can ruin the lives of those who survive.

Also, one other thing for those "should have kept it open and developed herd immunity theorists".

There is an argument that doing something like that could have the undesired effect of mutated strains forming... and like Manuas in Brazil, we see second reinfections despite "herd" immunity.

Too many unknowns still.

Stay safe.

Take a look around any of the mass vaccination sites, all the workers and volunteers are wearing N95s and almost all are wearing a second masks with surgical or cloth as a covering.

The mask discussion in the USA is being subverted by three simple factors, a large minority buck wearing any mask, another substantial group don't wear the mask correctly and Public health officials are still concerned about sourcing adequate PPE for medical staff and public health efforts.

I don't really worry about the anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers at this point.  They've already screwed the pooch for us, I'm just glad they're volunteering to be at the end of vaccination line.

Nobody is worrying. I?ve seen people avoiding people without masks.
The next thing is vaccine cards for travel , entertainment venues, buildings. The ?movement? will only go so far.

Not sure of the validity of this but it would be nice if we were able to treat people who have bad cases of Covid:
https://bgr.com/2021/02/06/coronavirus-cure-exo-cd24-trial-israel/

It?s too early to call it a miracle cure, but if the conclusions from a recent Phase 1 trial for a new drug called EXO-C24 are backed up in subsequent trials, we might have the first true breakthrough therapy for COVID-19. That?s in addition to coronavirus vaccines, of course, which will help prevent severe COVID-19 cases and deaths, and even reduce the spread of the illness. But while vaccines can give the immune system a heads-up to the threat it might have to deal with ? the real virus ? they have a few limitations. First of all, they don?t work on infected people. Secondly, vaccine supply is still limited and vaccinations aren?t available to anybody who might want one. Then there?s the threat of coronavirus mutations that might reduce vaccines? effect on the virus and extend the pandemic.

But if EXO-C24 can indeed help most coronavirus patients recover within five days, then the drug would not just save more lives. It would also complement vaccines and help address mutations. The drug is meant to calm the immune response that can be deadly in COVID-19 ? the so-called cytokine storms ? and should have the same effect regardless of how SARS-CoV-2 evolves.

Let's hope.

With so much attention / money being spent on vaccines, I hope the federal government doesn't lose sight on COVID therapeutics. I'm looking forward to Phase II trial data from Merck on Molnupiravir. It's an oral agent with the potential to arrest viral replication within 24 hrs (based on animal models). This could be a groundbreaking medicine if found to be effective and safe.

That would be almost better than any vaccine, especially if it could be used for all viruses.  How does it arrest viral replication?

It introduces errors in viral RNA replication. While this can be an effective method to stop viruses, it poses safety risks since it is considered a mutagen drug. Meaning, it could increase your risk for other mutations in the body such as birth defects. Given the short 5 day course of treatment, I'm hoping any adverse reactions are minimal.

Therapuetics are good but a lot more expensive than vaccines...I think at this point...vaccines are the clear way to go as to COVID-19.

Therapuetics will be needed going forward because experts believe that COVID-19 (and variants) are here to stay.

Looks like Nevada contact tracing doesn?t bode well for hospitality.
https://vegas.eater.com/2021/2/4/22266286/positive-covid-19-visited-restaurant-clark-county

More than 13,100 people in Clark County visited a restaurant before receiving a positive COVID-19 test, according to new data from the Southern Nevada Health District. While the data does not suggest that those infected contracted the virus at a restaurant, it does show the contact tracing in the 14 days before a positive diagnosis included a visit to a restaurant.

The new data from the health department marks only the second time it published possible exposure sites.

While precise locations are not part of the data, the list does include categories of businesses, with more than 23,000 possible exposures at an undefined ?other? category leading the list.

The data shows that 13,146 people visited a restaurant in the 14 days before testing positive. In the past 30 days, 1,969 of those who tested positive visited a restaurant.

Another 12,219 people went to a hotel in the 14 days before testing positive, while 1,078 of those who tested positive in the past 30 days were inside a hotel.

Grocery stores (6,775 all time/1,410 in the past 30 days), casinos (5,482/803), and bars (557/59) were also on the list.

well now we know...Accomplished nothing...damaged many...Recall!!

How two states with opposite COVID strategies BOTH 'bent the curve': Cases, deaths and hospitalizations plummet by 30% in a month in lockdown-loving California AND open-all-hours Florida

California Gov Gavin Newsom took a very strict approach during the coronavirus pandemic and closed bars and indoor dining, issued mask mandates and limited gathering
By comparison, Florida Gov Ron DeSantis has issued very few closures and said he has trusted Floridian to 'use common sense' to control the spread of the virus
Historically, when adjusting for population, Florida has had 8,306 cases and 117 deaths per 100,000 residents and California has had about 8,499 cases per 100,000 residents and 130 deaths per 100,000
Currently, each states is recording between 200 and 400 cases per million people and between 10 and 20 deaths per million, showing a very similar curve over the last two months
Hospitalization rates are also very similar with California reporting 24 hospitalizations per 100,000 while Florida has recorded about 22 per 100,000
