Appliances - Help Needed!

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
zubs is a 1percenter... take that opinion with a grain of salt. :)

As a 99percenter, I'll get what fits the function, look and price.

I don't really care about my fridge sticking out so I don't bother paying more for counter depth when I can get more space for less.

But I will get stainless. Someone once said that stainless will go out of style, I can't see that ever... as long as restaurant kitchens use stainless steel, it will always look good in your home.

If you make $45,000/year, you are in 1% income of the world and should already consider yourself extremely lucky.  Actually being born in the USA already makes you lucky.

When I was trying to figure out how to remodel my kitchen, I went to several model homes for ideas.  The development by Shea in Brea (next to the landfill) was a big influence.  They do a good job on kitchens.  The counter depth refrigerator had wood paneling, and the sides did not show any stainless steel.  It was flush with the adjoining cabinets.  You will notice that a lot of wood paneled counter depth fridges have a strip of stainless steel on the sides.  Someone spends all that money, and the installer can't even be bothered to make the fridge flush with the side cabinetry!?  Quite annoying.  PP model homes have this problem.

Anyway I just write what comes to mind.

Cox is still doing 1080i... I don't expect 4k for a while.

DirectTV says they are doing 1080p now... but I imagine the hardware needed for 4k isn't cheap.

Maybe in 2020?

have you all read the consumer reports to determine the reliability of these machines? or is price the only factor here?

Yes, I got all the consumer reports for 2013 and skimmed through them. It helped me pick out my washer and dryer. They didn't have a section for counter depth refrigerators though. I just took a chance and went with a Samsung.
Good choice. I have a "Sammy" Stainless Steel French door refrigerator with ice maker and water filter. I had it for 2 years no problems. (Knock on wood)

Hey eyephone,

Which Samsung fridge do you have? I ended up getting this one:

Samsung - 23.5 Cu. Ft. Counter-Depth 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with Thru-the-Door Ice and Water RF24FSEDBSR

I was a bit wary as it was hard to find reviews on it and Consumer Reports only rated the non counter-depth one that had the sparkling water dispenser.

Plus no one should buy a tv right now. Because the new wave of Tvs is "4K". (I'm sure most people know this, but just in case you don't) ;)

I don't know if I want to spend more to get a 4K when there aren't many 4K feeds to consume. Should I just get a 60 inch 1080p tv in the meantime? They have dropped in price considerably.

Why not?  This isn't the '50s.  Let electronics trickle down throughout the house.  When you upgrade to the 4k the 1080 can go to the master bedroom.  Then to the living room.  Then to the garage.  With wifi you don't need to run coax cables throughout the house to get a picture.

@daedalus:

Why? 4k TVs are overpriced now, just like 3D ones were.

Just wait until there is enough 4k content and 4k TVs will be in the sub $1k range.

Why pay more for a feature you can't really use?

The last question asked was whether he should "just get a 60 inch 1080p tv in the meantime".  My answer was "why not?".  Eventually he will upgrade, and the 1080 can find a 2nd home.

Ahh... misunderstood you... I thought you were saying "Why not a 4k?".

I agree... find the cheapest 1080p 60"-70" now (anything over 70" in 1080p won't have a very sharp picture).

I do think 4k will arrive eventually.

With phones being 1080p and notebooks moving beyond 1080p, TV has to go higher def, but ubiquity is several years away.

i also think that its important to see if 4K takes off.  it could just as easily be a minor blip.

Everyone thought 3D would be the rage since studios and some sports content was heavily pushing it.

Yet those features have fizzled out and ESPN stopped offering their 3D channel recently.

So i guess folks with those 3D sets will have to settle for whatever 3D blueray they can pick up to show off its functionality, since new content doesn't seem to be available via cable or satellite in a huge supply.

With any technology...there is a "breakthrough" level that the vast majority of the consumer doesn't care.  I have a perfectly good TV now...unless it breaks down, I see no reason to spend another $2,000 to $3,000 for one that looks a little nicer.

It's like that for computers and cell phones.

I agree with Tyler, while I have seen some 4k content in stores, not sure how much "better" it is than true 1080p.

Most of what people are watching isn't even 1080p, it's usually 480p, 720p or 1080i... watch a BluRay on a 240hz TV an you'll see how good 1080p is and that it's something that needs to be standardized first before we even think about 4k.

But companies know how long people keep TVs so they have to come out with something to make people buy their products. TVs just don't obsolesce as fast as computers and cell phones because it's so dependent on content not controlled by them.

anyone have this refrigerator or can comment on whether it is a quality appliance? Is it loud? Thanks!

also considering this one...
http://www.lg.com/us/refrigerators/lg-LFX25991ST-french-3-door-refrigerator

We are getting LG LFX25991ST in a couple weeks. I believe it has the biggest capacity among counter-depth french door refrigerators priced less than $4,000. If you decide to buy this model, check Howard's - we were able to negotiate it for $2,600 plus tax with free delivery and installation.

Great price, Sega. When did you make the purchase?

I plan on buying that same exact model too during the President's Day Sale.  The LG LFX25991ST.  Please let me know how you are liking yours.  Most reviews are terrific.  The only concern I have is the ice dispenser issue.

I had it installed last week. So far I like it. It's very quiet and provides a lot of space considering its counter-depth model. Haven't noticed any issues with the ice dispenser but I'm using it only one week... Oh, and LED lighting is very nice but I find it a bit annoying if you need to get something from the fridge at night.
