Samsung - 23.5 Cu. Ft. Counter-Depth 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with Thru-the-Door Ice and Water

anyone have this refrigerator or can comment on whether it is a quality appliance? Is it loud? Thanks!

also considering this one...

We are getting LG LFX25991ST in a couple weeks. I believe it has the biggest capacity among counter-depth french door refrigerators priced less than $4,000. If you decide to buy this model, check Howard's - we were able to negotiate it for $2,600 plus tax with free delivery and installation.

Howard's will match and beat any home depot or lowe's price by 10%.
I understand the price match.

The route I'm taking is 7% off the total price (basically sales tax). I believe Howard's is not going to match the ebates and lowes credit card offer.

If you go with Howard's you can get them to match and then beat Home Depot/Lowe's price by 10%. That is 10% savings. If you buy with Home Depot you can get up to 7% (5% + 2%) in cash back. So you would be saving 3% more in this scenario. Plus it is immediate. You still have to wait a month for the cash back from ebates. That was my logic when shopping.

have you all read the consumer reports to determine the reliability of these machines? or is price the only factor here?

Yes, I got all the consumer reports for 2013 and skimmed through them. It helped me pick out my washer and dryer. They didn't have a section for counter depth refrigerators though. I just took a chance and went with a Samsung.

Large appliances are the things that you should get extended warranties for.

While I tend to agree with this (esp on appliances that cost $1k or more), I have yet to have a mechanical issue with our washer/dryer, fridge or TVs (knock on wood).

And we also have a home warranty plan (have had one for years) that covers all major appliances and systems.

In our case, so far the extended warranties are worth it.  Lowe's reimbursed us for the full purchase price on our ref when it broke and took forever for their contracted repair company to get the necessary parts.  Our washer/dryer had also been fixed at least twice as part of the extended warranty.

IHO, just curious, about how much extra premium do you pay for the home warranty plan ?  so it would fix/replace your appliances  if it broke after manufacturer's warranty (and for how long would it cover)?

Good choice. I have a "Sammy" Stainless Steel French door refrigerator with ice maker and water filter. I had it for 2 years no problems. (Knock on wood)

I've had American Home Shield for years... I think it's something like $500 a year depending on the size/age of your home. It's basically supplemental insurance for stuff your regular insurance won't cover.

I should go check, they bill me monthly which makes it less noticeable.

I believe they cover repair and replacement of all major appliances/systems. They just get picky when it becomes expensive. They had to replace a water heater once, I had to prove it was a manufacturer defect and pay for the disposal but I got a $750 water heater installed for the $50 service call fee.

Their website is:
http://www.ahs.com/

You can get a quote and also see what is covered. There might be better home warranty companies out there now... but I haven't had the time to do the research.

Tvs I don't get warranty - since they are so cheap.
I don't either... and they are not covered by home warranties.

I usually buy my TVs at Coscto because they throw in the 2nd year warranty. If nothing goes wrong with your TV in the first 2 years, it should be okay for a long time. If not, by then, you'll probably want a replacement TV that will cost cheaper than the original one.

I just gave away our old tube 36" TV that was on it's 11th year of service... so heavy.

Most CCs give you extended warranties up to one year for purchases made on the CCs.

Plus no one should buy a tv right now. Because the new wave of Tvs is "4K". (I'm sure most people know this, but just in case you don't) ;)

We got really nice stainless steel appliances when we bought a house.  We ripped out the kitchen and installed new appliances for about $10,000 ~ $15,000.  Recently, I was looking at 1 to 1.5 million dollar houses on redfin and although these houses are more expensive than mine, if their appliances were just the standard black or white or even stainless steel, it felt like a downgrade.

So if you install great appliances in a 500,000 house, a 1 million dollar house with standard appliances will feel like a downgrade.

Spend money on expensive appliances.

I almost got this monstrosity, but it was $15,000 by itself!

I agree. If you can afford it, get stainless steel appliances. It makes a big difference.  ;)
