Yikes! My TV broke...

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Slight tangent:

If you only watch local channels you don't have to subscribe to cable or satellite tv to get them in high definition. I recently bought the Terk UHF indoor antenna from Best Buy and I am able to get all the local channels except for KCOP 13. If you're fortunate enough to have a relatively clear line of sight to Mt. Wilson you can put up a UHF outdoor antenna and save yourself the trouble of constantly fiddling with the indoor antenna. Not having to pay a monthly fee for local HD channels should save you a good bit of change.

OCbob - we have a rf transmitter too, but i thought wireless rf doesn't work with hi def signal. is there a trick to this?

When you use the "pause" button when pausing a show on cable, does the screen stay as is for a lenght of time, or does it go to a "screensaver" where the image starts floating around the screen? If it goes to a "screensetting" mode, then your image can't burn into the screen.

I think this is what makes the newer generation plasmas better than their older counterparts.

My first big screen TV was a Sony DLP, before I knew anything about flat screens, DLP is fine but works only in a dark room, if you have a bright room with lots of windows, the DLP image will wash out, and you need to view the screen head on, any angle and the screen washes out. Plasma is much better viewing angle, and best for bright rooms, just make sure the screen is matte and not glossy otherwise it will reflect a lot while you watch.

We bought a new TV recently, and my research consisted of asking friends how they liked their TV, and walking around Costco and Best Buy looking at the screens over and over.

I'll admit that some of my considerations included how well the TV would "match" the other electronics. I also played around with picture and color settings in the store since anyone can come in and mess with them. I wanted to make sure that I could alter the picture to my liking.

Having a TV in the bedroom is a new thing for my husband and I and it isn't used very often, but then I don't have children so perhaps I'll feel differently when the rugrats come along.

awgee - I love Burn Notice!

We just like to catch the news before nodding off. We don't do movies up there!

almon,

No trick to it. They're all broadcasting HD over UHF now. As long as you have a tuner for the digital signal (ATSC) you can receive the local channels in HD. If your tv is relatively new take a look at your manual to see if you already have the tuner built-in. Some of the locals also broadcast auxiliary channels. The biggest thing that took getting used to was seeing channel numbers in this format 4-1, 4-2, 4-3, 5-1, 5-5, etc. For example, the local NBC station broadcasting out of LA can be found on 4-1 while 4-2 is their 24/7 weather channel and 4-3 is their "Raw News" channel but it's nothing on par with CNN or your other 24/7 news subscription channels.

I ended up installing an external antenna. It looks like a satellite dish, small/square and grey in color.

Entourage is an Emmy Award-winning HBO original series created by Doug Ellin that chronicles the rise of Vincent Chase — a young A-list movie star — and his childhood friends from Queens, New York City as they navigate the unfamiliar terrain of Hollywood, California. - Wikipedia

Personally, I watch Entourage for 1 character, Vincent Chase's agent Ari Gold. Jeremy Piven won a Golden Globe for playing that character and (IMHO) the reason why that show kicks ass.

caycifish - We'll talk about the latest episode on Friday, but for now it seems we should catch this show, "Entourage". Oops, I don't get HBO.

Come on over this Sunday night. We usually record it and start watching it around 8 pm or so. Although this Sunday will be the last episode of the season. You can rent the DVDs at Netflix or Blockbuster - then you can start at the beginning and know what's going on. It's pretty funny - although you don't want your kids in the room when you watch it. There are a lot of "F" Bombs being thrown around.

Awgee - I have the first season of Entourage on DVD. You can have them if you want to see if you like the show. If you whisper me your mailing address I can send them to you.

Wow! So much great information! Thanks everyone... I guess I'll have to look around, narrow it down to 2 or 3 and then throw it out to you guys for my deciding factors. All in all I think LCD might be the best bet, since I keep it on so much... heat and energy consumption...

CalGal - I love "Big Love" on HBO... just started watching it recently... and I'm hooked!

Janet - I do have a TV in the bedroom, but it's soooo large, not a flat panel... I can't wait to get rid of it honestly! So, yes my hope was to buy two after I buy my new home... one for the living room one for the bedroom. So, I might take some of the advise on here to buy one now that will eventually go to the bedroom.

I was just hoping my current TV would be able to stick it out until I bought another house but, oh well! We can't get everything we wish for!

Ok, what do you guys think of this one???

I head straight for that stuff when evaluating a set. Those guys swarm all over a new set like ants at a picnic. It's nice to let someone else stand at the returns counter.
