...are schools in rest of OC so bad that you have to stay in Irvine, even if you dislike living here?

Just south of Irvine you have Oxford Prep and JSerra.  The cost savings from cheaper homes (vs Irvine) can go toward tuition expense.

Who said other schools in OC are bad?
One of the reasons people live in Irvine is because of higher ranked schools to send their kids, hoping to get them into a better college. While I don't really care about school ratings, there is ROI factor coming with good schools.
People complain about Irvine becoming too crowded with Chinese, but they still live there until their kids go to college. That's 15+ years living in Irvine for your kids and let's be honest, MAX ROI.
Nothing wrong with more southern areas. They got good schools and clean amenities too. Just not as masterfully planned for your kids and ROI factor to be counted.

To address CV's question, I am one to point it out to the person if their actions have affected me.  Most recently, a man parked his car on the main driveway at the entrance to the supermarket while his wife slowly loads groceries one item at a time because she has no shopping bags to hold said groceries.  No concern that cars, including mine, have to maneuver around his car and end up blocking cars coming in the opposite direction.  I politely told him that next time he should stop in one of the parking stall lanes so as not to block traffic; to which he replied that I should mind my own business.  I speak up when people cut in line in front of me, take grocery items out of my shopping cart (because I took the last item on sale), or block my driveway as they are too lazy to park properly.  This is all within the past month.  I've noticed that the Chinese will generally stop committing the offending action and sometimes you might get an apology.  Never received pushback from the Chinese.  The Indians tend to pushback and I've been told by more than one to mind my own business, including the aforementioned man at the supermarket.  Never an apology and they seem offended that I even called them out.  I cannot recall any recent unfortunate encounters with Persians so no comment there.

It's the Koreans, Chinese and Indians that prize the school districts and I've noticed that the Indians are more competitive education wise than the Chinese and Koreans.  So yes, some buyers of these ethnicities will continue to come to Irvine for their kids and schools, and Irvine will continue to have a higher concentration of these ethnicities over time.  I hope this continues to bode well for property values as I would like to take advantage of that when I sell.

As I mentioned in my OP, the reputation of competitive schools will attact some parents but cause concern among others.  Not everyone has a child that is brilliant and can do well in a highly competitive school environment.  Chinese friends of mine discuss the pros and cons of Uni, Northwood and Troy and I can tell you that not everyone believes that their child has to go to the "best" school.  Many choose other good school districts that are less competitive.

For people who come from places where common courtesy and consideration in public is not the norm and where neighbors don't engage with one another; they will find nothing wrong with the Irvine I live in.  However, I've lived where neighbors gather and look out for each other; where people maintain some level of common courtesy when in public.  Given the choice, I choose the latter and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one that feels this way.

My statement in my OP of how will this affect home prices is nothing more than that...a question to generate responses.  I'm introducing two points of consideration (that not every buyer wants a highly competitive school district for their kids and that some people may not like the demographic changes happening in Irvine) as counterpoints to see if members of this blog view either as a big enough headwind to materially affect Irvine home prices in the future.

It's weird that white people are not mentioned in this discussion....seems to presume that white people would never commit such offenses.  If we are using anecdotal evidence, I would say that I think jerks are jerks regardless of skin color or ethnicity.  Also, there is such thing as letting things go.  Go around the person and go on with your day.

It's just me, but I think that people of all races appreciate good schools.  It's why white people send their kids to expensive private schools.  Minorities just believe in the public education system more.

Many choose other good school districts that are less competitive.

good districts are still one of the biggest draws for home buyers, because most home buyers have children.  Regardless of whether your kid is actually smart...most parents thinks that their children are able to do well and thus will aspire to maximize where they go.  I have not met many parents (especially Chinese ones) who basically say that their children can't hack it and then move to Santa Ana.

Not sure what part of Irvine/OC you live in but the don't interact with your neighbor has been the OC calling card for years.  I am respectful to my neighbors and they are similarly respectful...that's all I ask for.

Go see how home prices like Arcadia, Walnut, or Cerritos have done historically.

I agree. For several years now, Arcadia has been the epicenter of bad behavior by people from a certain large country in Asia who have flooded into Arcadia on an epic Biblical scale. Their awful uncivilized behavior has had no effect on Arcadia RE values.

Arcadia and Irvine have seen a large influx of people from China as both cities are heavily promoted in China.  I remember back in the early 1980's when the chinese started choosing Monterey Park over Chinatown.  Property values went up a lot as a result but got to the point where some of this bad behavior became prevalent in Monterey Park as well.  The well to do started moving to Pasadena/San Marino and also Arcadia in the 1990's as a result.  Monterey Park real estate continued to appreciate but there was a leveling off relative to cities like Arcadia.  Will Arcadia get to the point where their appreciation starts leveling off as well...especially if demand from China wanes.  The mainland Chinese have been proliferate buyers of large commercial properties in the US but that appetite has slowed considerably this year.  I would not want to bet that the same couldn't happen to single family homes.

Again...what "bad behavior" are you talking about?  Plenty of Chinese people live in San Marino and Pasadena.  Arcadia is an incredibly hot RE market and has been that way since the 1980s.  I know many Arcadia residents who love where they live, regardless of ethnicity.

I think there are kind and considerate people in every race, and I'm sure there are many white people who are not.  It might even be a perception over reality issue for me.  When someone is in need of help, how many times do you see a white person help versus Asian or Persian or Indian?  I will also say that in Irvine, there are a lot of white people out in public but I've never had a bad encounter with one.

I see you are having quote marker issues...happens to all of us :)

BTW...You are literally engaging in stereotyping.

I have seen plenty of good and bad people of all races.  You know what there is a history of in this country?  White people going out of their way to hurt minorities.  That's not of course to say that white people are bad but it seems like you may want to go out and interact with more non-white people.

This is an interesting topic that I think will continue to evolve in the next decade.  It's commonly discussed right now amongst the asian parental set, and while there is a growing group that feels the schools are too competitive (with no real upside), many just suck it up and stay in IUSD b/c they don't want to "downgrade" to a "lesser" school district even though it may be a "better" fit for their kids.

I interact with a lot of white and also Chinese/Korean Asians.  The Asians friends I have are somewhat Americanized so they share many of the same values and attitudes as white people.  This may explain some of the differences in viewpoints expressed.

Here's an interesting contrast.  I grew up during period of white middle class flight from areas of Long Beach and others.  The assumption is that the white middle class did not want to live in proximity to or have their kids go to school with certain demographic groups.

Here in Irvine we have East Asians who dislike the influx of Mainlanders, want to be elsewhere but doesn't seem to have an issue with enjoying all the businesses catering to the demographic, or having their kids attend school with children of said demographic.

Me too!  And yet I don't think Irvine is somehow paradise lost.  This also assumes that somehow "white people" values and attitudes are the optimal level of values and attitudes.

I am as critical of people of my ethnicity as anyone (especially "Mainlanders") but 99% of the people are just like everyone else...they don't like their jobs and their kids get on their nerves.

Mainlanders have jobs??  We must know very different Irvine mainlanders :)

If you go to Oak Creek golf course on a weekday, you will see many mainlanders hard at work  ;)

A lot more Koreans at Oak Creek than Chinese.

I said 99%!  I'm not a 1 percenter!

There are no 99% mainlanders.

I've seen plenty of white people with attitude issues. Younger ones drive like they are drunk and the car looks kind of stolen. Not to mention older ones all have their F-150 with yuge wheels and drive like they are better than the ones with Prius. And is that KKK still around?

I've seen plenty of Asians smoking in front of parks and kids. This happens more with older ones and they take off with their leased Porsche and they park backwards in streets while they put nothing in their garage.

I've seen plenty of Persians with their bling bling clothes and  they play wannabe hip hop music so loud from their Maseratis and they somehow think they are all white with their dyed blond hair though some look more Mexican.

I've seen plenty of Indians from Delano model homes and they are probably calculating the square footage of every corner inch and thinking it's not worth MAX ROI because they will need that extra bedroom for their mother-in-law. And boy, are they such a complainer!

I've seen plenty of South Americans who check out other people's wives and speak in Spanish thinking we won't understand, but they forgot to remember we all take Spanish classes in high school so we understand fair enough to know what they are saying. But I gotta give one credit. they are the ones who will come and help when you are stuck on the road with flat tires.

And I just have not seen enough black people in this hood. Is the city controlling demographics too?

I can go on and on. Everyone has issues and it does not matter what race/ethnicity you are. There are more Chinese in town these days so it seems like only Chinese are the ones causing all the issues. BTW, why are those Chinese realtors force you to sign up your name and email all the time at the open houses? They're so annoying!
