Veterans Cemetery coming to Irvine

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
So why not landswap? Wasn't the point to have it inside el toro, which this would still be the case?
Current land will cost more for demo and disliked by residents?
I haven't had time to do my homework

They fear that program would have to start all over.

Staying put would costs more and that would also endanger the project. This is more politics than the vets.

I bet my house that the cemetery would not be built in the heart of Great Park. Any taker?

You mean like where it's at or the alternative site.. or just all together?

I was thinking of betting you korean bbq.. but house?  hmmmmmm

An alternative site is a given. There is no way in hell it will be built at the original site. I am a veteran and I have been proud to serve. At this political high stake and high cost, the money man makes the call. And that would be Fivepoints all the way.

BBQ is OK with me too. :-)

" .... the current site is controversial because of its proximity to homes, especially to adherents of the ancient Chinese philosophy of feng shui ? and people who just don?t like the idea of their property abutting a cemetery. This alternative site has the support of both residents and the veterans group formed to push for a cemetery.

The FivePoint proposal, spread across as much as 125 acres, fittingly straddles Marine Way and contains a host of proposed amenities for honoring our fallen men and women in uniform. The site would include a veterans memorial on the side facing the I-5 freeway. Plus, its proximity to the freeway allows ease of access for visitors and a solemn reminder of the price of freedom to those passing by."

" .... some, like Irvine City Councilman Jeff Lalloway, are being an unnecessary hindrance to progress in the city, yet again, likely for political motives."

these guys always have an agenda.

Looks like putting the vet cemetery by the 5 freeway is getting more traction with this editorial.

The vets want it, the homeowners at GP want it.  What's the hold up?
I don't see a good argument for keeping it at the original area.

So what 25 million has been spent.  I heard 5P can shit that out in an afternoon.

I have no skin in this game, but one day in the future, I would like to be driving to San Diego and notice the graves of US veterans reminding me of the sacrifices they have made for our country.  Why hide it inside the GP?

Maybe you just wanna stick it to those VOODOO fengshui fuckers who still believe in that shit...I can respect that, but honoring our fallen is more important.  And putting it by 5 has way more gravity than the original site.

Maybe one of the agenda is that they don't want it built  at all. Keeping existing site might mirror the bullet train project in Cali.

It makes total sense on the swapped land. It is easy to get to. It will have dedicated signage. I agree with others that its a everyday reminder of the brave veterans. There is even seed money. Maintenance will be much easier near the freeway access. Its flatter at the lowest elevation for water retention vs the current 5% site with tremendous water run off. Its a win win proposal to swap site. The current site will be left alone and unlikely to be developed due to stringent EIR. The neighborhoods would benefit from the additional green space. The swapped land being the cemetery vs another shopping center or a office highrise is much better suited traffic wise. Its is a win win proposal for all except for Lalloway's Swiss account. This is only a temporary 6 year deterrent.

So if all the pending proposals go through, we'll have the "Wild Rivers Veterans Cemetery and Water Park in the Coastal Canyons of Irvine"

Pack your Peace Lilies and bikinis for a day of fun because Wild Rivers was just selected to start negotiations with the city. The following post was made on their Facebook Page.

"Yesterday the Great Park Board voted to enter into negotiations to have Wild Rivers build and operate a new Waterpark in the Great Park. This is a big step toward the opening of a new Wild Rivers that will exceed expectations!!! Not sure when we will be open again but I know the majority of the City Council as well as our team will move as fast as possible to bring back Wild Rivers!

This was a team effort and we want to thank the Council for approving this as well as all the folks who supported us on this adventure to relocate Wild Rivers. Again humbled."

I am not sure where the alternate site is ..is it any where close to the new cypress village east?? I think ppl have certain beliefs, so not trying to be insensitive to veterans but I wouldn't like a cemetery closer to a home site I am considering.I respect the veterans !!

On the strawberry field at Bake Parkway and the Freeway.

Wow that is actually a great location. Especially for people driving there. Man so political.

That is exactly the point. Fivepoint is trading the best piece of RE they have for a crappy site that presented all kinds of challenges from wasting water due to run off, handicap accessibility on a slope ( I guess veteran's buddies have all their body parts intact), traffic studies on a residential street not for commercial capacities, dragging more construction activities into a residential site, gun salutes in a residential neighborhood with noise decibel restriction, long motorcade that exceeds the length of the residential blocks and many many more logistic issues. Lalloway's reason for keeping the current plan is not to spend more money studying the new site. For every dollar he is saving now the tax payers have to spend 100x more to develop the crappy site. Infrastructure  such as utilities and storm drain would be much longer being farther away from the freeway. This is just stupidity for Lalloway to spend thousands of dollars to prevent a penny loss. He is being paid for his vote and corruption at the highest level. The goal is to deter Chinese home buyers from purchasing houses at the GP. Is this a conspiracy theory?

After studying the Fivepoint proposals and the original cemetery plan the Fivepoint solution is hand down.

It is bounded by 3 infamous streets of Irvine; Alton, Barranca and Bake. The cemetery will have a scenic aspect of an arroyo to harvest rain water to be recycled for the drought seasonal uses. The bridge that crosses over the arroyo could be an iconic and beautiful. There is an arrival statement and plenty of curbside parking.

The original scheme have no arrival sequence. Its literally a cemetery next to a public sidewalk. Cadence street cuts off a part of the cemetery and visitors literally have to cross the street to find the other grave sites. The poor souls buried next to the public sidewalk will get Fido's golden shower everyday. Then comes an ugly black fence to prevent the peeing. The fence will rust and rot out at the bottom due to irrigation over spraying. Then the state will use our tax dollars to tear out the fence and build a stone wall base then add the steel fence on top of it. There will be some flashing lighted crosswalk between the two grave sites because some Rice rocket ran over the old lady widower in a wheel chair trying to cross Cadence to visit her Korean War deceased husband.
