IHO - yeah I knew IHS kid went to the local schools. I agree about providing a safe environment. But is sending your kids to Beckman in Tustin vs northwood in irvine really a safety concern?  Some irvinites think west irvine is the ghetto because the kids go to Beckman. Those are the people I'm really referring to.

West Irvine IS ghetto, so is El Camino/ Walnut area. Something off about the houses, not the schools. Myford is as good as Peter's Canyon or Hicks Canyon.
Northwood Vs Beckman : there are a lot of issues there. I don't have a kid officially in high school yet, so don't quote me on that officially, but I heard mothers talk about better AP classes on the Irvine side -also, heard it's more academically oriented compared to Beckman.
Oh no, I live in the ghetto...how sad.  :'(  :-\  ???

And IR2

USC and IR2 are good hard working people. How is telling them that they live in the ghetto not snooty?

I'm friends with USC and he can afford much more but for his needs west irvine provided everything he needed from a housing perspective at a discount relative to other parts of irvine. He values free cash flow more than sending his future kids to northwood vs beckman

Ugh! You are picking a wrong fight. I am on the same side as theirs. Both of them know I am VERY interested in ghetto-ing further or becoming a second class citizen.
Just because I call names to certain areas, don't assume I live in Turtle Rock/ Turtle Ridge.

Da ghetto doesn't scare me....I grew up on the rough streets of Huntington Beach so that's how I toughened up.  :P

West Irvine has better schools than where I live (according to this report).. so maybe it is I who is in the ghetto (although my bball skills don't reflect that).

Fine. I'll let it go. My wife has taught me when to give up when arguing with women :-)

No hard feelings CZ - keep in mind most of my statements are generalizations. Well except the snooty one :-)

Sure. I will try to prove you right every day, and still prove that you are wrong ;-)
You just ruined my lunch date BTW. I have 20 mins to get dressed and get out of the door now.  :'(

The rankings are just numbers, to me just bragging rights.  They do help with selling your home to someone that cares about the number.  I've said it before and I'll say it again...The most important criteria for academic success is innate intelligence and work ethic.  One is generic the other can be learned, and environment is helpful to instill motivation to do well.  It's always nicer to be surrounded by like minded parents and fellow students that believe education is important and that's where school ranking might have some applicability.  But a smart kid that works their butt off will do well at any school.  Vice-versa, a stupid and/or lazy kid won't do well even at the #1 ranked school in the nation.

Btw, I'm not entirely sure how much parent involvement really helps the student.  My wife and I talk all the time about how our parents never even cared how we did at school.  They were too busy working their asses off to make ends meet.  Guilt is a pretty powerful motivator.  Definitely, good role models help.

Also agree that you can't ever know what it's like to be a parent until you have your own child.

Basically the age-old nature vs. nurture / genetics vs. environment when determining how kids will develop.  Only so much you can do with controlling the nature and genetics of your children, so we spend most of our time on the nurture and environment aspect.  Thus, we hope that by putting them in a good environment (Irvine/Tustin Ranch schools), they will develop into higher quality people who will rank (hehe) higher on the bell curve than their peers.  Hopefully by at least 2 or 3 standard deviations.  :)

Sorry my daughter is not from Newport Beach. If you ask a 4 years old child where money comes from the answer is an ATM machine then get more when you run out.

She does not hang out with the crowd who will ask parents for a house downpayment.

The chances are no kids from any of you will work for my daughter. Her career goal is to administer medical services to children from third world countries. She is fluent in Spanish and currently learning languages spoken in various tribes in Africa. I would never ask my daughter to learn Maodarin because of business prosperity.

CZ - by your response to socals comment about irvine residents being snooty, you tried to imply that you are not snooty/elitist. But it kind of seems like you are based on your comments, well as long as you dont stretch too thin, but at heart it seems like you are. It doesn't matter to me if you are or you are not. Just own it, which based on your last post, you do own it. And I can respect that. Just don't  say one thing when you appear to be another.

Regarding the school thing, what annoys me is that it's almost as if you make low/lower income class kids to be second class citizens. And god forbid your kids have to go to that same school. The kids that tend to be the most successful in life are the ones who overcome adversity. You irvinites think sending your kids to the great irvine schools is going to set up your kid for life. I got news for you, your kids are going to be working for the kids from newport beach, or IHS's daughter, she has someone who won't shelter her.

IHS,

Your daughter doesn't need to leave the US. We have too many underserved children in this country who lack housing, food, and access to healthcare. America has a maldistribution problem.

Mortality rate is exponentially higher in most third world country where healthcare is non existent.

Good for your daughter that she knows what she wants to do in life!  Too many of us still don't really know what we want to pursue in life, so we end up following the current conventional wisdom, which is 'learn Chinese because China is the next superpower'.  I still remember when it was 'learn Japanese because Japan is the next superpower'.

The world has an unequal distribution of resources, absolutely.  The trick is how to go about resolving that.
Limited resources and unlimited wants/needs, good luck.

it is sad to see bathroom signs at all the malls no longer have Japanese characters and long been replaced by Chinese. However there are some toilet stalls with posted sign only in Chinese translated as " Please don't leave your shoe prints on the toilet seat".

Many parents  are doing all the right things for their children to having a good education and successful career. Few actually prepared them living a meaningful life.

This will probably need a parent who has found/ tried to have a meaningful life?
IHS, I really admire the level of maturity your daughter has displayed at this tender age. More power to her, and her kind who will actually change the world! She is finishing high school this year?

Teachers may teach children to be intelligent but character is shaped by parents. This over achiever generation will make a lot of money but few actually will know how to spend them. Most may even donate but in exchange for a name on a building, a chair, or a brick. Abby Aldrich Rockefeller is a good read if you are interested. I guess most people are right about Irvine schools. Ivy League colleges beg irvine students to apply. Top colleges engaged in bidding war and offering financial incentives to attract the worlds best otherwise known as "California scholars" .
