Timing is critical as IUSD moves forward with plans for fifth comprehensive high

As far as I know, there is no discussion on changing the school districts' zoning. A good portion of very expensive houses in Great Park will go to El Toro. The other part will go to the new "jail" school. I am not sure what's better.

Do we think some of the existing developments (i.e. PS and/or SG and/or Woodbury) will be rezoned for the new 5th high school?  Is any part of OH zoned for IUSD?  Just thinking if it is, Northwood High would get more crowded and also, they're building homes over by Jeffrey/Irvine Blvd.  That location should geographically feed into Northwood High.

Geographical location has very little to do with the school assignment. You can live across the street from a school but yet go to another one which is a few miles away.
The 5th high school  will certainly take the IUSD part of the Great Park neighborhoods, along with the part of Portola. I ***THINK*** Woodbury, Woodbury East, Stonegate and Stonegate East may also be assigned to the new school just to release the pressure from Irvine High and Northwood High.

It's very important to give your opinion on the 5th High school location to IUSD officials before they reach the final agreement(November 2013) with the builder, and start construction.

IUSD's projected enrollment for 2016

Northwood 2,932
University 2,867
Woodbridge 2,674
Irvine 2,556

Northwood and University need the most relief.  Maybe they'll rezone LA and QH to GPH.

In fact.... If they re-assign Woodbury to the new school, then Irvine High will get a big relief. Now, they can move some neighborhoods from Woodbridge to Irvine High, and then UNI to Woodbridge. Well, nobody would like to switch from UNI to Woodbridge in the first place, but it will alleviate the stress.

The issue with UNI is that it's super popular. Nobody wants to switch from UNI....

I was thinking that too.  Westpark can go from University to Woodbridge.  But which part of Woodbridge can go to Irvine?

Possible, but unlikely.  If they just built the originally proposed number of homes at GP, it still will be at close capacity to accommodate the number of students from the GP and the surrounding neighborhoods (CV, WB and PS, etc.).
if they expand that to double the number of homes, its even more unlikely as the GP HS will barely accommodate the kids from the homes in the GP itself.
Don't forget a critical piece here.  A good half of Great Park Neighborhoods will go to Saddleback Unified (El Toro High)

If the GP number of homes is expanded, its more likely that they build a 6th HS on whatever site they do not chose for the original GP HS (A or B) than to shoehorn more kids into a single school.

The unions representing the teachers, school administrators and other staff at GP HS will likely file complaints if their working conditions are drastically different than at the other IUSD schools (more students = more stress for them too).
If the 5th High School is built on the Site A, very few teachers would like to go work there due to health and safety concerns. Also, 5HS on Site A will be constantly on a lock down, should any incident happen in or around the Musick jail (which happens now, and will happen more frequently during and after the upgrade).
I am sure, I would personally like to work in the overcrowded, but safe school, than to stay all day long in the middle of nowhere, right by the jail.

Tyler Durden said:
The jail might be safer  - going to work at a public school is hazardous...the kids shoot more people over a year than inmates kill prison guards!
I am not comparing the jail and the school, it's a rhetorical question. All I am saying that it's going to be the same school layout, same kids, same teachers, same parents, BUT the location is different. Site A is by the jail and landfill, while site B is in the heart of the community. Where do you think the teachers and the kids will be safer?

They will go to work there if they are assigned...
Or get transferred to another school district. In any case the teacher's unions will raise a voice after a few cars get burglarized. I already foresee the school surrounded with the military grade fence, SWAT on the premises, face control and full strip search at the entrance

Tyler Durden said:
then they will sue IUSD and Five points for health related issues later on when they claim it was due to exposure to toxicity in the area. It has to be believable for them to get a large settlement...
Of course, it will have nothing to do with the landfill, where they yet haven't done all the mandatory tests yet, after two years spending money into design.

And if another convict escapes and captures hostages in the school... I am sure IUSD and Five Points will have a very reasonable explanation, based on some phony statistics. I am not blaming anybody personally, but I feel there some $%^& going on behind the scenes. A reasonable person would have been really concerned about the kids... However, I don't see the Board wants to take any facts into consideration.

I am really interested to see how many Board members would love to see their own kids staying at such a school.

Ok but then the rest of the posts on this thread sound like geography plays a huge part in the rezoning.  Why would Woodbury/SG/PS get rezoned to the 5th high school and not other parts of Irvine?  Geography is the main reason no?
All other schools are overcrowded and pretty much far away from PS, Woodbury, Stonegat. The new school in the heart of the community will easily solve it. If you build the new school in the middle of nowhere, it's hardly a solution.

Isn't the plume under Woodbridge?
You do understand the difference between the underground plume and a landfill where all the toxic waste is concentrated, don't you? It's like a difference between a puddle and sewer.

Teachers still willingly teach over at the HS there.
till their cars will bet burglarized or even worse.

The reality is IUSD is a highly desirable district to work at.
Yes, for safety and dedication. Not for salary. Now, remove the safety piece from the equation. Is it still desirable, or may be not so much?

That coupled with the # of teachers this country produces every day means I don't think they will have trouble attracting talent to teach at either site locations for the 5th HS.
How many teachers want to risk their health, staying by the landfill for the good 6-8 hours a day? How many teachers want to risk their life working at school by the large jail?
How many teacher would consider a safer and healthier work environment? Just think about it. A school in the heart of the neighborhood vs. a school by the landfill and jail? Make you pick

What are you talking about?? The distance from the jail to the landfill is approximately 10 miles. How could the site be "by" both of them?

You've used the phrase "in the middle of nowhere" twice now when referring to the jail. Do you know where Musick jail is? If you think the landfill is close to it, just wait 'til you find out how close it is to the Irvine Spectrum!! 4 miles. I don't know, lunchtime shopping sounds pretty fun for those teachers. And for the teachers who live in south O.C., they're liable to pick the location with the shortest commute.

LOL! Yeah, the first thing an escaped convict wants to do is get caught by holding up a school. They would be slightly more interested in getting away & evading police.
