Subic Bay closure was the result of rent increase.  Same with Cam Ranh Bay.  The PH government wanted $825 million/year for Subic Bay naval base lease, and Vietnamese government wanted $200 million/year (from Russia) for Cam Ranh Bay base lease.  In both cases, US and Russian government declined to pay and closed the base.

The Cubans are probably kicking themselves that they signed a perpetual lease for Guantanamo Bay naval base to the US at fixed price.

Well...it was 1903 and Cuba wasn't exactly in a position to bargain.

My Grandfather Galicano Apacible was one of the drafters of the Philippine constituiton and was active in Phillipine indipendance from the United States.  My great uncle was President Osmena, He's the guy walking next to McArthur in the famous I shall return painting.  My Uncle Teofisto Guingona was Vice President for Gloria Mcgapagal from 2001 to 2004.  Along with numerous senators governors and congressman and judges yah, my family has the power chops.  And yah I was against the base pullouts, a lot of people depended on those bases and that was a huge hit to the economy.

Eye, you clearly have never been to Manila.  I am a So cal kid born and raised in PV.  Manila is hot, crowded and painfully poor.  Sure there are some cool island paradises but the city is stifling. You think Cali is bifurcated between the rich and the poor, Manila is worse and there is little separation, poor live right on top of the rich (they steal their power) .  I wouldn't live there if you paid me big bucks...I'm just too American, I like it where I am, one of the reasons I am passionate about things I see going wrong.

First of all I never got a response whether you think making blackface and other sketchy posts can be hurtful or can be considered racist. (You like to pick and choose what to respond to.)  If you want to make discriminatory/racially motivated posts then you should look out for me on TI. Every year since Castro's revolution, the US Treasury has sent the Cuban govt. a check for Guantanamo Bay rent per the lease but the Communists have never cashed any of the checks (even though they need the money) as a matter of principle. Cut off your nose to spite your face.

Famous "Tiger Mom" author and Yale Law Professor Amy Chua, whose family is from the Philippines, wrote about her childhood in Manila and specifically how her affluent ethnic Chinese family treated the poor in Manila like shit. Amy Chua's aunt's chauffer finally couldn't take her abuse and murdered her.
