What is a ?fair assessment? of what he said ? Racist or not ?
Racist, probably... but remember the time, in 1971, many people were like that, probably including people who are close to you.
"Fair assessment"... I don't agree... it's not like he said those things without provocation. He was asked questions regarding a particular subject matter and his answer was directed towards that... education, leadership and opportunity.
Today, if a well-known actor were to say those same things, Twitter would explode and he would never work again, but again, you have to properly frame this with context and timeline.
For example... many years ago... the word "gay" was often used to describe something with negative connotation, the same thing with the word "retard". If you were to use those words today, it would cause an uproar. But if I were to find some recording of you using that word back in the 70s... could I call you out on it today?
Again, not a commentary on if John Wayne was racist... or if I am racist (which someone seems to contend) but just on how presentation of words, context and time can change things or even make people react differently (which is sort of on subject of this thread).
