@momopi - I really like your posts that have a lot of thought behind them.

But I think we are making the same mistake here that we accuse radical adherents of  Islam of making - taking a literal interpretation of their holy text from thousands of years ago

Apples and oranges yes

But a literal interpretation of the constitution from its original context and setting would also involve limiting firearm ownership  to maybe muskets ?  then the gun lovers could own all the muskets they wanted, while other rest of us were free to use them as walking sticks

And dont forget the founding fathers also owned slaves - we dont ding them for it because it was a different cultural context back then when people of color were property to be owned and disposed off at will
Ya know, this past Sunday the PRC changed their constitution to make supreme leader Xi supreme leader for life. I had no idea our Constitution was so similar to Red China's.

Then you should be really really worried about the autocratic tendencies of our Rambo president  ( sorry , cult leader )

This series of posts re: ? nothing has changed ? is very reminiscent of people dismissing news they don?t like as ?fake news?  , a lasting legacy of 2016 campaign ...

And this is precisely why , even in February 2018, Sean Hannity is leading his show w a feature on Hillary Clinton , LOL !

1. Trump: Take guns early without going to court first.
2. Trump shuts down Scalise concealed cary push at televised bipartisan group.
3. Trump tells senators ?Your afraid of the NRA?
4. Trump tells US governors, ?Don?t worry about the NRA?
5. Trump: school safety is a priority

Is this a complete 360% change? Trump knows that public opinion regarding gun control. (70% in favor)

I think the media has been painting a very dishonest picture of Trump, so anything looks like a 360 degree change when you actually see what's going on rather than tiny clips.

It's kinda  ironic because Trump does have a lot of legit gaffs and things to criticize, but the media still feels the need to exaggerate and distort.

Republicans will likely turn on him once they realize he's not the same guy that their news outlets advertise, either..

I remember when Target stopped selling guns in California back in the 90s they had a huge blow out sale. Something like 70% off all guns and ammo.  You could get a shotgun at Target for $35. Alas I got there too late when the shelves were almost bare. Too bad Dicks already doesn't sell guns in CA, otherwise there should be some great discounts coming up.
I too swore an oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. And I meant what I swore.

Dicks Sporting Goods in CA does sell firearms, but not at all locations.  Locally the Huntington Beach (near Old World Village) and Cerritos Mall locations carry firearms and ammunition.  They do not carry semi-auto center-fire rifles.

I shop at the Cerritos location, the fishing/hunting section is upstairs on 2F.  Please remember to take your purchases out to the parking lot to your car and not inside the mall.

Interpretation of the Constitution is pretty fluid...and Founding Principles are not part of the Constitution.

Founding Principals is represented by the Constitution and Bill of Rights.  For example, individual liberty by Amendments 1-3, Private property by Amendment 4, and limits to government power by Constitutional articles.  But yes, the ultimate authority is the Supreme Court and that's way above my pay-grade.

What I'm concerned about is more mundane, like the consequence of growing political divide.  I foresee a future where if you're in a car accident, someone passing by might eyeball your political-ideological bumper sticker and decide not to call 911, because they think you're better off bleeding to death.

It's also concerning that everything you post on social media (facebook) or even text messages are screened and archived.  Your potential employer, government, law enforcement, and people from "the other ideology" all might use this data against you.  On my FB account I've already scrubbed most controversial content.  You'd find Korean Drama posts and profile picture of a young Korean actress (Shin Min-A).

It's already being done.  Good luck having conservative leanings in places like Silicon Valley or college campuses these days.

It's not the NRA's fault that mental people want to use their products to kill people. If a mental person bought a Toyota Camry and then drove it thru the Santa Monica board walk and running over 100 people, is it the NTSB's or NHTSA's fault?  Should we raise the minimum vehicle purchase age as well?

NTSB doesn't represent car makers...they set up standards for car makers to meet and calls them out for not meeting them.  They don't fight regulations and laws that make cars safer.  Organizations like NTSB are why motor vehicle deaths has significantly dropped in the last 50 years.  In fact, car makers are make their product now to to reduce most accidents by adding AI and self-driving mechanisms.  Still, drivers need to be licensed and insured while we need to register our cars every year.  Government also mandates a number of safety standards in cars and limit the modification and type of engines that are "street legal."

NRA is actively arguing to make guns more dangerous and available to more people.  They employ fear/scare tactics to promote the sell of arms/guns and then fight every effort to regulate guns and attack those who oppose them as tyrants and anti-liberty.

We have  not even gotten to the ridiculousness of comparing the cost v benefit analysis of a car versus a gun in modern society.

Reminder:

In March of 2000, the White House signed a ?historic agreement? with gun manufacturer Smith and Wesson, part of then-president Bill Clinton?s ?comprehensive efforts to reduce gun violence in America.?

Smith and Wesson, which changed its name to American Outdoor Brands in 2016, had pledged a host of changes to the way that it made and sold guns. It promised not to make guns that could accept ammunition magazines with more than 10 rounds. It would develop new ?smart gun? technology that could only be fired by owners. And it would cut ties with gun dealers who sold weapons that were disproportionately used in crimes. Eighteen years later, many of those promises echo new proposals to curb gun violence after a Parkland, Florida, teenager massacred 17?using an American Outdoor Brands semi-automatic assault rifle.

Three days after the company?s agreement with lawmakers, the National Rifle Association declared Smith and Wesson a ?sellout,? for its ?craven act of self-interest,? and took aim at the company?s British ownership. (Started in the US in the 1800s, Smith & Wesson was purchased by a British plumbing supplies company in 1987).

Smith and Wesson is the ?first to run up the white flag of surrender and run behind the Clinton-Gore lines, leaving its competitors in the U.S. firearms industry to carry on the fight for the Second Amendment,? the NRA said. ?Of course, there is no Second Amendment in Britain, where subjects are barred from owning handguns and many long guns.?

I'm as strong of a 2A Supporter as they come, and am happy that Dicks and WalMart took the steps that they did. I'd rather have a private company act than be compelled by government mandate. The problem here is that they may run into an age discrimination suit. OK to restrict sales if it's back by law, but not OK in other cases. Movie tickets come to mind as it's possible for a theater to restrict the sales of an NC-17 film to minors. We'll see.

How about a little gasoline on the fire? Did we know that The Tang Menace was a CCW holder? I didn't until today. All this rubbish about how President Tourette Syndrome was going to confiscate first, and due process second really doesn't seem to hold water. Methinks he was playing to the room.

Should we place metal detectors at college campus?
Fence in the campus with the temporary fences.

Idk (I don?t know) but something should be done.
