I love car shopping..next to getting a refi for my mortage and doing my taxes.. for some reason love to crunch numbers.. but only if it involves me saving money... I am a frequent Kirkland Signature shopper....but their car buying service is for wimps who use to buy Saturns... I can get a much better deal myself...  If you don't like to haggle (for some reason most people don't) use Costco, or carsdirect, but you won't get the best deal..

Did you check carsdirect for the Avalon? Is it a big difference to what you can get when you haggle at the dealer?

I did use carsdirect last time and it was a great experience. Click, click, click on the Internet, car delivered to my home, I gave them a check and it was done. I guess I paid for the convenience and time savings but I wonder how much the difference is.

about $1400-1500.... that's how much convenience and time will cost me if i go with Costco, carsdirect.. no thanks

I don't haggle at the dealer...mass email internet/fleet manager and go from there...i don't have a poker face and haggling at the dealer with their lowliest/slimiest sales guy on the floors.. I'll get killed..

The gas money you save with hybrids is paid to the dealer when you buy the car... not worth it.. and can you picture me driving a Prius?  Looks ridiculous.
I didn't rec a hybrid to save money on gas... I suggested it to be more earth friendly and to cut down on our reliance on fossil fuels (although one can argue that to make the batteries and then to dispose of them is a net zero proposition).

Not all hybrids look like a Prius... they make mid-size cars and even full-size trucks with hybrid engines now.

I know you don't want to go "anyong ha sae yo" but this commercial is funny (esp the guy shaving) and relate-able (the smoke detector hunting):

Love our Prius :)

i drive a hybrid - i knew it was a financial loser (although less for me than the average buyer since i have a long commute) vs the same non hybrid model, but i love the fact that i only have to go to the gas station once per week vs twice with a non hybrid. i hate having to go to the gas station.

Your commute is way longer than mine and I still have to go once a week to the gas station.  :(

I'd avoid the Sonata Hybrid for now. I drove the car for 3 months and it was a pretty rough ride. The switching system between the hybrid motor and engine isn't up to speed yet. The Camry Hybrid on the other hand is a fantastic car. Obviously, Toyota knows what they are doing with hybrids.

OP... would you take the Genesis over the Avalon?

I would think if PS is really about saving money... he would go for the LG of cars.

LG of cars?  what's that?  KIA?

So tomorrow I'm going car shopping again... I gave up on the Corona dealer, stringing me along, I emailed back again to confirm, no response...

my best quote so far is $30,500 which beats my original Power Irvine deal by about $500.. but I have to drive to Torrance...maybe we'll go to King's Hawaiian for a power breakfast before going to the dealer..

carsdirect.com still shows at $32,402 for same car

I would take a Genesis over the Avalon... and I'd take the new Azera over the Genesis. The Azera has a sticker of 32K, with nav and leather:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W7g-tCIDQc

I've only spent a week or so driving an Avalon, it was okay. They did make a lot of changes with the most recent refresh. My hesitation with the car is the universal praise I hear for the new model. I've heard A7, Jaguar XF, & Kia Optima thrown around as descriptions of what it will look like. I never really hear anyone get that excited about a Toyota - and now I'm hearing the two cars worth waiting for are the Avalon and Lexus ES. It's mind boggling, the boringest cars are soon to be the best looking of the bunch. Bizzaro world.

Isn't the Azera smaller than the Genesis?

I think PS9 should lead the charge of driving a Samsung... if only they made better mini-vans.

Slightly smaller however, as a fwd car you get the benefit of a flat rear floor. It's a better 5 seater. Also, the Azera is built in Korea. The Avalon is built in Kentucky. This has been debated for years, but I still believe the Japan built Toyotas tended to be more reliable than the US built models. Again, just my personal experience/opinion. There is a reason all Lexus models (except the RX) are still produced in Japan... and the Prius, probably the most reliable Toyota of all is built in Japan.

I've been a sucker for german cars....BMW and Porsche but the more that I read about the Nissan GTR the more tempted I get (many call it an exotic killer).

I've heard horror stories about the GT-R maintenance schedule. Nothing beats a nice German sedan, the best car I've owned was an E39 slammed on Hamann HM2s. For Porsche, the 991 is the reason I keep playing the lotto. I'm not a fan of the fatamera.

You can really get a brand new Acura for less than a 2010 Acura? That doesn't seem right to me... esp when USC says to get a 1 or 2-year old model and save up to 20%.
I just searched on Edmunds.com for used 2010 MDXs within 200 miles of my Bay area zipcode. There is 1 - 2010 and 3 - 2011 (identical vehicle). Here is the link for the 2010, advertised ~$5K more than I paid for a new 2010 with similar mileage to what I have.
