that's the thing - with an incumbent there is a whole existing network of donors and name recognition w voters that goes with it . with an open seat, all the nutjobs come out (esp w repubs, like you saw in Alabama) and funding becomes more challenging - so the probability of seat retention by the incumbent party goes down, regardless of the party in charge.

its ok to chill once in a while -- being uptight about your viewpoint 100% of the time means you will end up calling people names and resorting to defending genuine bad actors like that Wisconsin white supremacist you otherwise probably know very little about

but broadly speaking, why even talk about McCarthy ? we all know it will be " someone" since it will be a vacant seat (majority or minority) .
the bigger issue is even Paul Ryan is not safe in his home district . Expect many more retirements from now until November ...

He fooled enough people in the media and the public (of being a smart policy wonk) for long enough that he got a presidential run and a speakership and delivered exactly what his donors wanted. Now he can relax with $$ at a relatively young age. this is actually a great timing for him.

Yes, but the dems running nutjobs too. In Cali, the dem primary is shaping up to be how radically anti-trump can you make yourself seem.
Will de Leon unseat Feinstein in the primary, not overly likely, but something could happen. Yea, let's replace Feinstein with the guy authoring the State Sanctuary law.
Not sad to see Ryan go, just suspecting we will see the vacancies result in more radical and more entrenched Congress.
I don't blame them for not wanting to play in the world of Trump, but that means the ones that come after want to play there.
