If you live in Floral Park, your kids are going to private school. There's allure if you're a doctor or lawyer, with hospitals and courthouses very close. I know two Floral Park families. They love it. The biggest complaint is the homeless problem ever present in the area.

so you save $50-100k on the price of a similar home in irvine, then you pay $10-15k per kid per year for private school for 12 years each....doesn't sound like a good roi to me?

I'm of the belief that every child should fend for themselves upon birth! Pfft private school? You're going to public school son! Tax dollars at work!

The worse ROI is living in Irvine and sending your kids to private school.  Apparently, there's a growing number of families who do just that, because IUSD just "isn't good enough".  There's also a growing number of families who are homeschooling (not just the hippie dippy crunchy granola anti-vaxxer type either).  I'm not sure how the economics of that works - I think there may be some subsidies involved?

You have a yard.  8000+ sf single family yard with no HOA.

There is one house listed in all of Irvine that is an SFR on a 8000+ SF yard.  It's $969K.

The 2nd cheapest one is $1.49M plus $184 in HOA and around a tax payment over $20K at that price.

The 3rd cheapest comes in at $1.57M.

Or new construction sans landscaping for $1.5M + HOA and Mello Roos.

Come on NSR. This board likes small lots and they cannot lie.

I am not sure what is NOT GOOD ENEOUGH means. What are some of the parents expect for k-3 grades at Beacon Park as an example, that is not good eneough? Should kids at these age group should be high in academic?

I'm just guessing but there's probably various meanings to not good enough.  I heard some of what this board classifies as FCBs are finding the schools not academic enough and are sending their kids to some of the elite private schools in south and coastal OC.  Some have indirect academic issues with the schools ....like class size, etc.

If people have more money to burn, all to their power. Good for class size to get smaller, I agree. They did open up Cadence to funnel some of the over crowding issues from last year. I do see dramatic change in size this year. As far as academic, I know because I've been to the class rooms and the teaching environment is top notch. If parents want to stuffs their kids with additional math and science there are additional resources to get and pull their kids to that as well.

That's code for filled with plebeian rugrats.

I know a lot of FCB families from Taiwan and South Korea find Irvine schools to be not academic enough. 9th graders on academic tracks in Taiwan and S Korea are learning Calculus while Irvine students are doing algebra. 10th graders in Taiwan and S Korea already finished AP level physics, biology, and chemistry. Middle school students there go to school year-round and school hours are long. 7 am to 6 pm is typical. In addition to that, most parents there send kids to tutors after school.

If all of those perceived as inferiors then I wonder why buy in Irvine in the first place. So are they naive or stupid. Or they like to be close to conveniences, yet have to trek all those ways everyday of the week. Hmmm, maybe I am stupid.

A lot of private schools offer buses.  I also overheard someone say that it takes 30-40 mins to drive from Woodbury to drop off at Portola HS due to the crazy amount of school traffic.  Not sure if the parent was over exaggerating but maybe someone who does this drop off can chime in.  If that's the case, then public school isn't necessarily the most convenient thing either.

pretty sure you can walk from woodbury to portola hs in 40 minutes.  we can all use the exercise  :)

Were they talking round trip?

Without traffic it's ten minutes each way.  Catch the lights wrong and you're at fifteen.  Add ten minutes for the drop off line and you're in the 30-40 window.

Tustin Summer Academy was at Orchard Hills, even with half the class rooms empty, if you hit peak drop off line, it was ten plus minutes starting with the back up close to the shopping center on Portola.

Pretty sure it was one way.  They mentioned it was too dangerous to walk/run/bike so they drive and spend a lot of time organizing car pools.

Here?s another way to solve that problem. Buy in Altair (Gasps) deep breadths....,eyes bulging... popping,,, but but the Mello......Roos......is too low.

Yup buy next to the preschool you?ll go to when your kids are <5. Move next to the elementary school when they get to kinder. Buy a CV home for middle school then move to Altair for high school. Have twins or triplets so everyone?s at the same school at the same time.

This is why there should be bus service. Its not even just the traffic on the roads. Its waiting in the pick-up/drop off lines that's a killer.

Given the ease of buying a suitable home in a desirable neighborhood in Irvine over the last ten years, wouldn't just be easier to go to Med school, be the Doctor delivering the triplets, live in Floral Park and have the nanny Shepard your kids to private school?
