There are plenty of NBA stars that come from well off families.  No need to bash just because he's choosing to live in Irvine.  I like my housing value to increase please.
I'm not bashing because he's a kid of a wealthy FCB, it's because he's 5'10".  He better have a growth spurt and hope he gets to over 6', preferably over 6'2".  Size matters in the NBA.  Chris Paul is only 6' but he's a special talent.  If he was a 6'2" 14 y/o, then I would take the story more seriously.  But he will get schooled by other bigger guards from the likes of Dominguez, Taft and Fairfax.  If he really wants to see how he stacks up to the competition, he should enroll at Mater Dei, a basketball powerhouse.

I wonder how tall was Jeremy Lin or any other typical NBA players when they were 14year old.

I love how all Asian comparison comes back to Jeremy Lin.

If Jeremy Lin was 5'10" when he was 14 years old ... What will OCgasman say then??  :P

I would still say he has virtually no shot at the NBA.  Jeremy Lin is 6'3" and was 1st team all state and NorCal DII player of the year and got zero scholarship offers.  Even with all his publicity now, he's just an average point guard in the NBA.

I hope this kid has a backup plan and takes advantage of his opportunity to be educated in the U.S.

I would have to say this is a catch 22.  I'm not saying OCgasman is wrong but because that's what pops into most of our heads that's pretty much what comes true. Thus the majority of Asian parents stop their kids from wasting time in sports.  That mentality is what prevents more Asian guys in sports like basketball, unless he's as tall as Yao Ming.

If Jeremy Lin was black, he would have gotten those scholarships + more with his abilities.  But because he was Asian there's a stigma against Asians and any mainstream sports ... because people don't believe they can do it.  It's like what men think about female drivers.  Like black people and winning Oscars (until Hailee Barry broke down that wall).  You get the idea.

I don't think the kid in the OC article needs a backup plan, he just need to give it his all.  Backup plan can be sleeping on his parents sofa and playing Xbox in a million dollar Irvine house.

Wow, couldn't have said it better. I was that 15 yo 5'11'' kid when I moved to Detroit from Asia. By my sophomore year I was the best 1 on 1 player in my school and the 1st Asian in school's history to make the varsity team. I was unstoppable during pick up games but comes the season the coaches had their doubts. First they wanted me to learn to play PG because of my height, then they said I lacked team and PG fundamental so they opted to start someone who knew the game better that did not have my skillset or ability - fair enough. Then when senior year was finally supposed to be my year, this guy John Grotberg, who later became NCAA's all time 3pt leader, transferred and took my starting spot. When John and I played 1 on 1 we would always split the games. But he had been deliberately trained to succeed in the 5 on 5 game. The true difference between me and John? His dad trained him, had him play organized ball since early age, and rebounded for him to shoot 1000 shots everyday. My dad? told me to stop wasting my time (sounds familiar?)

I never got to maximize my potential and when Linsanity first happened, I got so many messages saying that was supposed to be me. But that was never supposed to be me, because no one ever gave me a chance, and I wasn't talented enough to overcome those barriers. Maybe I was never going to be good enough regardless, but I just cant help but think how many others in similar situations that are even more talented than myself were forced to drop their dreams simply because they were Asian.

Btw, life after basketball was totally fine, went to a good college got my degree just as I would without basketball, and now live in Irvine. This kid has no reason to give up at such an early age.

Completely off the original topic but just had to share my story since Zerolot hit the nail on the head on something I literally had to live through.

@irvineguy:

The question going through me and Homie's mind is "Do you still play?".

TI Bball Meetup Part Deux!

(No donuts this time cuz Homie don't play that anymore)

Reminds me of the movie Ping Pong Playa. Asian guy living at home playing video games and "thinks" he's a good basketball player. In reality, he's not that good. Then he finds his calling playing ping pong. But in this case, I don't think he will probably not play ping pong.

Love your story because it proves so many of us never get a chance to follow our talents and pursue our dreams.

I don't think it's off topic at all because that's the whole point of the the OC article.  Finally an Asian kid with a dream + 100% supportive parents.  How many Asian kids can say that?

I think IHO is going to get a lot of fresh recruits at TI Bball Meetup Part Deux thanks to that article.

that's what IHO's wife said :-)

Well, the truth may surprise you, Qwerty! Iho may have the last laugh there. I'm willing to bet said wife has no complaints. I happen to know Iho is descended from a line of men who have a strong reputation among our kind for being "very passionate", to put it delicately. (Iho: I don't want to breach your security / identity, so if you want me to delete this, let me know and I will. I'm trying to be as vague as possible while making the point.)
