I would almost understand if they wanted him to further his education and become a doctor and hope for residency status for a U.C. But to play in the NBA as a 5'10" 14 y/o?! That's just dumb. All that parent money and almost a 100% chance of failure in achieving his dream...I see drug rehab in his future.

I hope they enjoy their home and living in Irvine but this kid is not a future LeBron James. They better start making other plans for his future.
I think the key take away here is that they moved their son here where he can actually pursue his dreams. Many Americans now lose sight of that or take it for granted.

I'm supportive of pursuing the 'American Dream' but this story doesn't engender sympathy or inspiration. Parents buy their way into the US and drop $1M+ for an overpriced Irvine stucco box so son can become an NBA baller. Sounds more like a life of privilege.

There are plenty of NBA stars that come from well off families. No need to bash just because he's choosing to live in Irvine. I like my housing value to increase please.

well, being from the hood probably helps. and it would definitely help if he was black.

isnt he from torrance? that is kind of the hood for the southbay
and there are always exceptions to the rule. this kid will be lucky to get a college basketball scholarship

I'm not bashing because he's a kid of a wealthy FCB, it's because he's 5'10". He better have a growth spurt and hope he gets to over 6', preferably over 6'2". Size matters in the NBA. Chris Paul is only 6' but he's a special talent. If he was a 6'2" 14 y/o, then I would take the story more seriously. But he will get schooled by other bigger guards from the likes of Dominguez, Taft and Fairfax. If he really wants to see how he stacks up to the competition, he should enroll at Mater Dei, a basketball powerhouse.ZeroLot said:There are plenty of NBA stars that come from well off families. I agree that this kid would have a better shot by playing at Mater Dei in getting the skills and recognition...although that would mean sending a kid to school in Santa Ana. Maybe he could live in the SVUSD portion of the GP and attend El Toro, they have a great teaching coach.
