FCBs are real!

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
This Sunday morning, my wife and I discussed about canceling a class for my daughter since it was outside budget. And then when I read this article, I was wondering when I will have that kind of money to spend... hmm.

This story is so ridiculous on so many levels.  I would almost understand if they wanted him to further his education and become a doctor and hope for residency status for a U.C.  But to play in the NBA as a 5'10" 14 y/o?!  That's just dumb.  All that parent money and almost a 100% chance of failure in achieving his dream...I see drug rehab in his future.

I hope they enjoy their home and living in Irvine but this kid is not a future LeBron James. They better start making other plans for his future.

I think the key take away here is that they moved their son here where he can actually pursue his dreams.  Many Americans now lose sight of that or take it for granted.

I'm supportive of pursuing the 'American Dream' but this story doesn't engender sympathy or inspiration. Parents buy their way into the US and drop $1M+ for an overpriced Irvine stucco box so son can become an NBA baller. Sounds more like a life of privilege.

You make is sound like to be in the NBA a guy needs to come from the hood.

There are plenty of NBA stars that come from well off families.  No need to bash just because he's choosing to live in Irvine.  I like my housing value to increase please.

well, being from the hood probably helps. and it would definitely help if he was black.

isnt he from torrance? that is kind of the hood for the southbay :-)

and there are always exceptions to the rule.  this kid will be lucky to get a college basketball scholarship

:o - Hey that's my hometown! Torrance is not the hood - maybe just the north part closer to Hawthorne and Inglewood. The parts closer to PV are definitely upper middle class. My high school was 85% Asian - reminded me of Irvine  ;)

I kid because I care. I actually like Torrance. I used to live in Redondo, we used to eat out a decent amount in Torrance

Speaking of a Torrance, I wonder if the real estate will drop once Toyota leaves.

I'm not bashing because he's a kid of a wealthy FCB, it's because he's 5'10".  He better have a growth spurt and hope he gets to over 6', preferably over 6'2".  Size matters in the NBA.  Chris Paul is only 6' but he's a special talent.  If he was a 6'2" 14 y/o, then I would take the story more seriously.  But he will get schooled by other bigger guards from the likes of Dominguez, Taft and Fairfax.  If he really wants to see how he stacks up to the competition, he should enroll at Mater Dei, a basketball powerhouse.

surely the odds are against him.. but it's not like they are going all in on this.  They are moving to the US.. living in Irvine.  His dreams probably will not pan out, but at the least he gets citizenship and a great education.

I wonder how tall was Jeremy Lin or any other typical NBA players when they were 14year old.

Irvine can produce an NBA player, but it is rare. Austin Daye from Woodbridge is still floating around enough to earn a ring with the Spurs.

I agree that this kid would have a better shot by playing at Mater Dei in getting the skills and recognition...although that would mean sending a kid to school in Santa Ana. Maybe he could live in the SVUSD portion of the GP and attend El Toro, they have a great teaching coach.

You forget about Adam Keefe, also from Woodbridge.

Scott Brooks went to UCI.

What's more important is what college he goes to... he'll have a chance if he can excel at UCLA. :)

He has a better chance to become a medical professional than make it to the NBA.

There's so much talent AAU basketball.  http://www.aauboysbasketball.org/news/view-story/ArtMid/3359/articleid/46295
