SCHB,

I am recalling that at the time, my BMW had, by far, the best crash test rating of any SUV.

It also had superior braking features (can't recall the lingo now).

It also has side air curtains (is that the right phrase).

LL - LOL. I like being the only one in the building. Keeps the riffraff out.

It is the bimmer that has no maintenance costs. I dont trust consumer reports because there has been proof they favor the advertising dollar. It is best to find independent internet sites for opinions. I like bimmers but that bluetec MBZ is freakin nice. Just buy one of the hi-rise condo foreclosures in Vegas and you can get around having it here in Cali. Or if you have a relative in another state .

I can list the costs of my 89 Honda Civic I had between 96-00 and the costs of my 97 bimmer I have had since 2004. The costs are almost identical except for the upgrades I have done to the bimmer. The engine could drive a tank I swear. If anyone wants proof on why a bimmer is better than a Japanese front wheel drive car then name the the time and place for a canyon run. Make sure you have someone who is quick with the camera because you will only get one chance to take a picture of my tail lights before they are gone.

Its not like I am comparing the M-5 with an accord. Although I have driven the M-5 and if I had one I wouldn't be here right now. I would only have an hour for internet time. Aside from my honda I have owned the bimmer the longest. I have had two 4runners, a toyota pick up, a Tundra and 98 VW VR6 Jetta and the bimmer is my favorite by far.

I bought my Picasso for $20 bucks due to a price tag mistake that should have been $2k. I was recently offered $10k for it and I laughed and said add another zero and we can talk. It will be worth $1mil one day just like my house will be again. I hope the house beats the Picasso.

I do have to reiterate that had the X5 been shut down immediately after the light came on, this thread wouldn't even exist. Cooling systems bust open sometimes... No car is immune from this. German, Japanese, or anything else.

Janet - That sucks. I know exactly what you are talking about. The high heat can cause the expansion tank to become brittle and break. Take it to Chris they know what they are doing and would have caught that. They replaced my expansion tank and noticed it was hot the last time I was there. They replaced it for free since it was defective.

If your husband is into cars don't take him with you. Chris gets pissed when people start to drool. He is a big guy too.

Graphrix -

After acrobat posted that he's moving into one of those Plaza buildings, I checked out their website. The penthouse units do look pretty nice - well, their floorplans do (especially Penthouse #4). However, $2000 a month is crazy for just HOA. Now I feel better about my $459/month HOA (which I think is too high, itself!)

tourbillon - Any time you need to work on the e30 let me know. I have bought several bimmer specific tools. I know way too much about the e36 and e30 so whatever within reason that needs to be done can be.

Thanks all!

How embarrasing that I didn't know how bad it could be.

Ah well, I do now.

graph, whatever became of BMWNA's handling of the 318 timing profile gaskets? They were doing a piss-poor job of supporting customers as of 95 or so. The whole thing turned me off to the company a bit.

tourbillion,

I am not saying What Chiarman Mao did has anything to do with Japanese war crime. I mean, it seems Chinese people worship a mass-murderer as well.

You said you did not see his portrait? Well, I guess that is not his picture on the Chinese bills (RMB) then. Or, it might not have been Mao's portrait I saw outside the Forbidden City?

EvaL - No three car but only one fits. Way overdue for a garage sale. The graphrix storage center has been closed now for three years and if the fam doesn't come to claim some of this crap it will be out on the driveway.

LL - The HOA is way out of control. High density is designed for affordability when that is the only product left. It should be higher because it is the first of its kind. To each his/her own but with this product and the amount of units coming online only time will tell who his right.

I agree with all on bimmers beating up on honda for seat of the pants comparisons -- but still think that if Janet is looking for a good sedan for $25k that she owes herself to look at a new loaded accord or camry and compare it to those 3-4 year old lux brands. You can get a diamond in the rough in the used car market....but you also never really know where that used car has been...

Eff - 318s were the biggest mistake they ever made in America. The Euro version didn't have the problem. They had to change things for USA version I think because of emissions. The e30 and e36 were great cars only with the s/m50 or s/m52 motor.

It just sunk-in: IrvineRenter now falls into the category of "fiscally irresponsible".
