SCHB:

What I said was based on what I recall from reading consumer reports etc on the cars, but I could be very well wrong. Anyhow, if you don't want to supply information on why BMW engineering is something to be appreciated above other makes thats fine, but I don't understand why you ask me to provide evidence of the opposing claim. After all even if I can't find such evidence it doesn't make your claim correct. Also, I'm not asking you for info out of spit etc, rather I'm really curious if there is something I'm missing here. Also, I'm not trying to suggest Hondas are the best. After my recent experiences at Honda dealerships I don't think I'll ever purchase one, although I don't deny they are quality cars.

LL - Drive both and make a decision. I haven't driven the MBZ but the bimmer is nice. A little tight fit even for me. The MBZ at least what I know of them from their previous models is a bit more cushy. What is it no maintenance for three or two years?

CK,

I am afraid I don't share your view. The gun violent case doesn't really interest me because Japanese are not allowed to have guns. If we don't remember history, then history will find a way to repeat itself. The very fact Japanese PM decided to visit that temple again so recently after so many year s of absence should be a sign in itself. I fully support dropping the A-bomb on Japan because it saved lives. To me, the entire japanese nation is guilty of war crime because they knew the crime against civilians and they supported it. Average German did not know most of the war crimes committed by their own government. I know this because my grandfather was in Germany during ww2 and although he did not like Nazi, he too thought they shipped Jewish people to some African colonies instead of sending them to death camps.

Graphrix -

Know anything about the Bluetec E-class? I was reading about it on the MBsocal website and was all excited..but then got to the part where they said it wouldn't be available in California - if I remember correctly, something about not passing California's emissions or something like that?

You are starting to sound like a housing bull (Maybe you are, I have no idea)!. Leveraging is always very risky and it rarely pays off, of course everyone thinks they know what the markets are going to do etc etc so people do it.

Anyhow, I also have student loans that I'm in no interest to pay off fast (No way I'm going to do a 30-year consolidation though). But that isn't an example of Leveraging.

I was on a (believe it or not) Rolex scholarship, and one of the requirement is I have to do some diving helping out various organizations. We were doing some search for some Mayan burial site. I always liked Mayan culture, and I thought it would be fun.

BMW is the one with no maint costs, and I think it is for 4 years. Go for that 5 series over the MBZ. I'll be the guy in the practical Accord lusting after your car.

I didn't see any negatives about consolidating into a 30-year payoff plan. There's no pre-payment penalties.

I'm not a housing bull.... nor do I think housing is going to collapse. If prices go up, then great for me and other owners. If they fall some more, than maybe Graphrix won't be the only one in the 3000 building. (can't wait to have my own in-house doctor and concierge people to schedule my dry cleaning)

Graph,

I'm no mechanic, but I've been told the expansion tank for the radiator developed a crack.

There was a secondary leak of coolant as well, in another location.

I had a full checkup only a month ago, so I'm really P/O'd that I was not advised to replace these parts.

Anything plastic or rubber is trouble!

My husband liked the fact that the Infiniti has a timing chain (metal), instead of a timing belt (rubber).

tourbillion,

Correct me if my Chinese history is rusty. Isn't Chairman Mao also a known mass-murderer? Chinese people worship him anyway, his portrait is everywhere.

Yes, BMW does cover maintenance for 4 years. (I extended it to 6).

I'm past that now.

It was nice, however, to get the $0 bill (when checking out) for awhile - especially when I would see what people were really paying!

Caveat: warranty and/or maintenance agreements exclude anything rubber.

My family suffered a great deal under Mao, more so than under Japanese in fact, which is why we left China so many years ago (I was a baby when we left China 20+ years ago)

I don't think he is worshiped at all in China, at least I did not see any of his portrait on the public buildings when I was in Shanghai a month ago. China, especially the current CCP government has a great deal to answer for also, but I fail to see why that has anything to do with Japan's war crime. Let me ask you this, is it OK for the Soviets/Russian to do a rape of LA/OC because American's past treatment of native Americans?

Tyler-

Consumer Reports data shows that BMWs are not as reliable as Hondas and Toyotas. But "any objective metric" is a ridiculous exaggeration. BMWs have some of the best dynamic performance of cars in their respecitve classes, and even CR shows this to be true. Acceleration, braking, emergency lane change, and roadholding are class leading. The engineering that goes into achieving this- good weight distribution, rear wheel drive, superior steering feedback, balanced handling- takes a concerted engineering effort that some appreciate and some don't. 6 or so years ago, CR called the BMW 530 something similar to "the best car they have ever tested".

If you are happy with a Honda and haven't driven a BMW, that is fine. Not everyone gets it.

And to those who get it, you can buy a gently used 3 or 4 year old BMW from one of the 3/4 poseurs and enjoy it.

Laing Lies is correct, BMW is the last mfg to offer 4 years of included maintenance. Everything but tires and gas is included in the purchase price.

Just for the record. I purchase expensive items if I want them, and if I can afford them.

In my purchases (the few that I make), there is no limit for quality and no allowance for pretense.

Furthermore, the current Chinese government DID pay compensation to my family for our suffering during the early 50s and 60s, and we received an official letter from current Chinese government stating my family was mistreated and the government then did a terrible thing and they apologized for it. My family still own a townhouse in Shanghai that was a part of that compensation package. (Talk about overpriced, that townhouse is currently valued at 1 mil plus USD) I wish they would do the same for the innocent victims of 1989. Perhaps in another ten years or so.

Hi, Eva

I did read 1491. It is quite interesting, and I do agree they could have gone to Europe via Africa, but South America, I believe that will be pretty hard.
