Factory farms are pretty nasty places. And the killing of an animal is always the ultimate outcome, in general, American institutionalized processes have minimized the inhumane treatment in the slaughter as much as possible given that ultimately you are slaughtering an animal.
Life on a factory farm is of varying degrees humane and really a matter of interpretation. A factory chicken farm controls everything from light exposure, day/night cycle, feeding, castration, debeaking, and a two month life birth to market. In some cases they're in a open house but at a density of slightly more than 1 bird per square foot, in other cases, they're caged in groups of 3 or so. They've been bred to gain weight quickly on lower feed levels.
If you've ever noticed a store bought chickens drumsticks aren't straight the reason is really simple, the bird literally through feeding, light exposure control and genetic breeding out grows it's legs ability to stand. It's common for chickens in factory farms in the last week or two leading to harvest to spend the vast majority of their time lying on the ground because their legs can't support them but briefly.
I find the beating of a dog abhorrent and unnecessary, but frankly marginally less humane than farming practices worldwide.
And yes, I eat factory farm chickens, because $38 for a single real free range bird from a CSA means I need to spend way more on food and ultimately, I'm eating it, so dead is dead, and just trying to minimize the badness along the way.
