Will the Great Park be Canceled? or just Delayed a while?

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
[quote author="Girl In the OC" date=1210934784]I am amazed that they are opening up even more retail in this area... I've been speaking with the retailers off Jeffrey and Trabuco, Woodbury Center and Orchard... most are hurting and losing money... Except Trader Joes ;-) They always do well!

It seems after each new retail area is opened, many of the customers move to the "new" retailers... diluting the already small numbers of customers frequenting these establishments...

I'm almost 100% sure these new stores will be aimed at the other side of the base (south). (lol, i refuse to call it a "park" until I can't land a A380 down the center of it.) ..namely North-West Lake Forest which is SOARLY lacking in new modern shopping centers. Woodbury has the north side of the base all sewed up.

They need to put the pipe down. What about Portola springs or Woodbury that is dying on the vine and you think they will sell new homes and mixed living at the great park? Maybe in 3 to 4 years. Sure they will build apartments that could help pay for some of the infrastructure and commercial is taking a hit right now, but do we need more of a glut of overpriced apartments in Irvine. It just amazes me that these people have no idea what is really going on around them.

anyone see the front page of the marketplace section in the OC register today?

I can't find the article online but the title was "Great Park officials deny housing hit"

It should read ?Great Park officials are idiots".

I'm predicting this will end poorly a few years from now. 200 Million up in smoke and nothing to show for it. A tiny tiny tiny demo park that no one can actually use. No baseball, no basketball, no tennis, no pee-wee football, no soccer, no pool, no nothing. Just a big ol boondoggle with idiots in charge of the money.

I've heard that Trader Joe's management is very unhappy with the Woodbury location. Trader Joe's opens stores out of cash on hand so the lower than anticipated build out and the resulting lack of traffic has caused some problems for the company.

TJ's at Woodbury may not be too profitable, if at all, but it still has to be waaay better financially than the Ralphs at the same location.

Just watched Real Orange on KOCE this morning and the Register has 2 articles today on the great park. One of the authors was interviewed and he talked with the Leannar CFO and he said best case scenario if Lennar would start building because of permits and setting up the bonds to be sold it will not be till late 2010 before they would see any construction. I know they city wants to start on the commercial construction but from reading of late this is the next wave to hit as they we are going to see a big slow down in commercial construction. The only action we will see at the great park for the next 3 years will be the Orange Balloon going up and down. Now that's progress...

[quote author="PadreBrian" date=1211239801]Once those 2 huge apartment complexes open up this summer, Trader Joe's and everything in that center will busier.

I disagree. My brother has lived at Woodbury Court for a while and that place isn't even filled up. Lots of units not filled, so I don't think that the center will start to get to crowded levels, because IAC will have problems filling the other complexes. Think Orchard Hills lite.

I just got my mailer yesterday; "The Great Park Connection" looks like they are having a blast this weekend; The Festival of Flight, Party at Hangar 10 (sounds like a rave to me), balloon rides reopening (yippy, that was fun), they are even doing live concerts, dancing and free food every Friday & Saturday night from August 2 through September. Doesn't sound like they are hurting to me...

round, they are BLOWING $200Million that that got from Lennar. In no way is that a good thing. Instead of starting small and putting up much needed baseball and soccer fields they are blowing money on a "demo" park no one will go too.

[quote author="NoWowway" date=1215809497]Humorous assessment of the Great Park in the OC Weekly. He's calling it the "Great P-U" b/c of its proximity to the composting facilities. He says it smells like a big pile of steaming sh.......

yeah, it smells like rotting eucalyptus leaves...

place was packed today and scorching hot. i suspect people just wanted to check it out for some free food and stuff. not sure how anyone could live in homes built out there.

Just came back from the "great park". First time I have been there. I am surprised how little they have done. Not sure it worths the money to hold such an event with no park, and no new homes to sell. Irvine Company / Woodbury town center is having a concert type of event at the same time. We skipped it as the kids are tired from the heat at the "great park".

wow, getting a little desperate for negative comments on the great park event. Just admit, a bunch of people came out. Give them credit, they got the word out and had a great event.

Doesn't change the fact that this is going to end the political careers of three irvine city councialmen and woman AND will be one of the many anchors that will drag Lennar into bankruptcy.
