Why so many negative comments about living in the City of Irvine?

Irvine's a great place to live. I think what the person said about "80% liking it and 20% hating it and you hear only from the 20%" was particularly astute. Irvine was the first master planned community and is famous/notorious for being so thus making it an easy and big target for all the detracters out there. You should ignore all of the comments from all the posters that have never lived here. Even the ones that have just visited probably never got a true feel for the city. In the end just remember : Irvine is for families. Irvine is for families. Irvine is for families.



Panda, I've read your posts for awhile now and I feel like you just need to sit down and think long and hard about what you're going to do. Go through your finances, make sure it all makes sense then make a decision. It seems like you need to hear alot of others' opinions first when it is your own that is most important.



Btw, did anyone else laugh when Panda wrote "I thank God everyday that I was born Asian American and not White." I know he/she doesn't mean anything malicious but I just had to point it out because I almost spit my drink out when I read it.

I think Maltese has some good points. As you know, I'm from Hinsdale and grew up also next door in Oak Brook. Lots of Middle Eastern/Asians there as well. One thing I love about Irvine is the convenience. I think that as a suburb- it is much more varied than the burbs of Chicago (but of course downtown Chicago is much better than downtown LA). If I were ever to move back to Chicago, I would move downtown- Old Town specifically. I would never move back to the burbs in Chicago. Yawn! As you're from the Chicago burbs- you'll have no problem adjusting!

Did you grow up in Coventry or Warwick? I dont have a very high opinion of Coventry but Warwick is nice (I went to Leicester and Loughborough Uni)

This closely matches my final impressions of Irvine. On the positive side I would add Irvine has a significant business/entrepreneurial component that should help keep the Irvine economy and the lifestyle described above more stable in a significant economic downturn.



My wife and I were in Morrison, Colorado looking at houses last week and we stopped at the only convenience store in a 3 mile radius of semi-rural, upper end 5 acre home sites. As we were standing outside the store sipping hot chocolate and surveying the scenery as the CA pollution slowly purged from our lungs, I noticed the safety shutoff system for the gas pumps out front was from a company in.....Irvine, CA.



Irvine is not world-class in anything. It is a solid middle to upper class community that is relatively safe and stable. And people pay an extraordinary price to live there. That?s it.
 
I enjoy living in Irvine, because the place gives me a good vibe.



Other than that, the restaurant selection is a little bland.



One good thing about living in Irvine is, you don't have to drive far to reach the restaurants in Costa Mesa, the beach in Newport, the art galleries in Laguna, and hiking in Modjeska Canyon.



From the freeway, San Juan Capistrano is a short distance away. Totally different vibe from Irvine. Go for a walk around the Mission.



The people who live in Irvine and complain about everything being bland and want to move, probably never bothered to really look AROUND Irvine in every direction.



But if you're looking for friendly people who'd say hi to you on the street, Irvine is probably not the place. When I'm walking along the San Gabriel river in south El Monte, the Mexicans there greet me and I chat with them about their dog or horse (it's a horse trail). They're not as wealthy as OC yuppies but very relaxed and friendly people. In Irvine people would pretend they didn't see you and avoid eye contact.

I totally agree. I have yet to meet a Mexican that I didn't like. In general, they are the most friendliest people I have ever met. I'm moving to Boston, and I want to take them all with me. :coolsmile: They are one of the things that I'll miss about California. :down:



Now before Troop says anything, I haven't met a Mexican gang member. I'm thinking they might be a bit different.

Maybe the avatar is a picture of Panda and he was looking for employment at the strip club?
 
Stuffit, i grew up in what was then one of the new "Suburbs" of Cov, it used to be a great, booming City...I went to Coventry Polytechnic - now known as Cov Uni - and when I got married at 20 bought a House in Woodloes Park, Warwick....

They would change the color theme for different Holidays



Anyone know why they turned off the Color ?

I agree, the five dudes painting my house right now are mexican and they are SUPER friendly. I am absolutely amazed at their work ethic, they don't mess around and work REALLY fast. Panda's #1 favorite food is Korean. Panda's #2 favorite food is Mexican. I love Mexicans.
