The point is the City of Irvine does not agree with SCAG/HUD in their allocation of affordable housing requirements for Irvine and will therefore do everything in its powers to build out these upcoming developments as quickly as possible with the bare minimum of affordable housing.  Not 21,000 units.  My guess would be around 1,000 more units hopefully near and within the IBC planning area.

How is that the point?  Irvine can do what it wants but they're going to have to pay for it down the line whether it be in money or conversion of units.

As usually the case in these types of situations, SCAG will most likely sue Irvine again and the city will settle for a lot less affordable units than the original 21,000 mandate.  IMO, mostly like settle for less than 2,000 units.

Except they don't have to settle...they fought Irvine all the way last time.

By the time SCAG fights all the way through the courts and all of the appeals, all of the raw land in Irvine will be built out.

Injunctions my friend...injunctions.

Once this goes to the courts and it's in the news headlines everyday in front of people's faces, the residents of Irvine will not allow it.  It's classic NIMBY.  You're talking about people buying $1MM homes/condos.  They just will not allow it.  We live in a democracy and peoples votes and voices matter.  Just take a look at the recent actions taken by the residents of Aliso Viejo in their fight against developing an affordable apartment complex.  The city council killed it.

You understand that the city council or anyone in Irvine will have nothing to say about it.

Unfortunately this is a done deal. Irvine already lost their appeal. Courts rulings will trump any city council vote. It is a matter of how high/severe the penalties will be for the city when they don't meet their legal obligations. I can't imagine how they will meet this deadline.

It's never a done deal until it is a done deal.  The people will rise and will be heard.  SCAG or any other government agency is just full of elected bureaucrats that wanted to get elected.  Like you said there is no way Irvine can logically meet the deadline or the mandate of 21,000 units.

SCAG is made up of elective official from 189 cities in Southern California, do you think that they will care about Irvine's cries of "we can't do it?"

Again, Irvine could have met that deadline but it has chosen not to.  That's fine but there are consequences to be faced...severe financial ones and maybe court oversight.

I say bring it on.  The court of public opinion matter the most.  Currently most people buying in Irvine had no clue about this SCAG mandate and once it is brought to everyone's attention the people will fight it tooth and nail.  I bet this is the last thing TIC wants.  Do you think the people buying the La Cresta homes for over $1.5MM in WB have any idea that they are living right next to an affordable low income apartment complex?  This the the last thing that TIC wants in the headlines.  They will help the city fight it just like it did for the El Toro Airport.  Thank goodness its the Great Park now.

Okay...and what is TIC or Irvine going to do about it?  I don't understand your argument...people in Irvine will get mad and then what?  Nothing.  Irvine will still have to comply with the mandate and the courts have already affirmed SCAG's right to issue the mandates so Irvine is going to lose for sure.

And no...court of public opinion does not matter the most when it comes to the actual courts.

This is California, you know, the State were Irvine resident's say it's a good thing that money is taken away from Irvine schools to be spent on poorer schools because the Irvine parents will just make up the difference anyway?

The State were LAUSD rolls out a poorly thought plan for deploying iPads to all students and then rationalizes it saying it's a 'civil rights' issue.

yeah no one outside of irvine is going to feel bad or care that irvinites dont want low income housing. the fact that you dont want them is only going to turn everyone outside of irvine against you and then you will ensure you get your "fair share" of low income housing.

bring on the mexicans!!!!!! now you irvinites can live right next to your gardener, or your housekeeper or the person who cooks your food at your favorite chinese places! sounds like a win win for everyone involved  >:D

LOL.  Low income does not discriminate or involve one ethnicity or another.  There are low income people of all races and color.  My point is you can't just mandate affordable housing just because some unknown entity like SCAG thinks its right.  99% of these SCAG bureaucrats don't even know or care where Irvine is.  They just know it not in their city or backyard.  I'm guessing that you and some of the other folks on this board probably do not own homes in Irvine and as such do not have a vested ($$) interest in this matter.

Tustin, right on the irvine border. so i do have a vested interest in irvine being sky high cause we get the low baller/value seeker FCBs spill over into my hood and raise my home price as well.

Actually you can...there is whole court of appeal decision about it.

And I own a home in Irvine.  I don't know what that has to do with it.
