NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Hey qwerty... did you end up getting one?

I've been inching to get a 60+ for a while now but have been waiting for when we get a new home.  At the current inventory level, by the time we find a home we want at the price we want... 360? holographic TVs will be less than $1000.

i didnt end up going to costco on cybermonday and was hesitant to pull the trigger without seeing the tvs in person. went to costco this weekend to check them out though, will likely go with with the vizio 70inch for 1950 or the 70 inch sharp for 2,250.  both pictures looked pretty good to me.  now i have to decide whether i wiil put the tv over the fireplace or on a sidewall.  luckily the fireplace isnt terribly tall and there couch would be far enough to where the angle wouldnt be too much of an issue. my wife wants to go this route as it gives us more options with the furniture seating arrangement. my initial thought was to put the tv on the side wall but then we are kind of stuck with just a sectional. although the line of site would be perfect and we would actually have more space between the couch/tv.

TVs have come down dramatically in price these last few months! Almost as dramatically as housing prices have increased in Irvine.

I highly recommend looking at Plasma displays by Panasonic, they consistently get the highest picture ratings on CNET and are even cheaper than LEDs.  Also, all the previous problems of burn in are no longer an issue.  I have a 60" Panasonic GT-50 and the picture blows a me away every day!

I've been considering plasma too... but it's just too dark. Yes... that means truer blacks but in a well-lit room, it's harder to see. There is still also the weight, heat and power consumption issue.

And yes... Panasonic makes very good plasmas.

I'm still waiting for a 65"-70" to get to low $1k or even sub $1k. You can find 60inchers around that price but I'm getting greedy... don't want to have to buy another TV for a while (the last one we bought was over 4 years ago) and if I get a 60" and then see a bigger one for the same price in less than a year... I'll be irritated.

Been also thinking about getting 3D just for the kids. 4k TVs will be the rage soon... but I figure in another 4 years, they will be more affordable and more networks will actually be broadcasting 4k signals.

Thank you for rubbing in that my house gets no light...  On the other hand, the biggest problem in a bright room with my Panasonic is not how dark it is, but the reflection/glare on the glossy surface, otherwise it is plenty bright. The LED is nice because of the matte surface that diffuses light better.  Yes it is hotter and heavier, but it is mounted on the wall in a large room, so who cares.  I plan to lift my TV only once, to mount it, and I even hired someone to do that.  The power consumption difference from LED is also minimal, with 5hrs of tv every night, the difference is $40 per year.  Since LEDs are in average $500 more than plasmas, it would take 10 years to make up that difference.  Like you said, by then we will all be using 4k!

Yeah... the glossy screen is a downer (and some LEDs have them too).

I like that plasma has a "smoother" picture when it comes to action... very good for sports and man-movies.

I'm not sure if it's a $500 difference anymore since LEDs have come down quite a bit this year, but that depends on size. My other concern is plasma TVs might be extinct soon... there are rumors that Panny is downsizing their plasma manufacturing and may stop altogether.

If you really want big size... go DLP... but that is also dying.

I want a plasma just to have one... probably put one in my office.

60 inchers are in the $1k range now but I've decided to wait until we move to buy a new TV.

The only problem is we've been looking at homes for 4 years... so at that rate... if we ever find a home, 4k TVs will be within our price range.

I don't even think there are that many BluRay players that output 4k.

I think some of these Ultra HD TVs will upscale your 1080p signal so it might be better than 1080p, but not really 4k.

I probably won't get one until cable starts broadcasting in 4k.

Dang... Costco had an open-box Vizio 65" for $799... I came back the next day... gone. Boo.

If you're looking for a 4k TV, TCL (Chinese brand) will be selling a 50" for $999. That's way cheaper than any of the other brands.
