Mental Illness - Information for Families

Suggestions for what families can do to help a mentally ill family member:

Assist your family member to find effective medical treatment. To find a psychiatrist, you may contact your own medical doctor or check with NAMI. You may also call or write the American Psychiatric Association.

Seek consultation regarding financial consideration for treatment. You may call your local Social Security office and check with your family member?s health insurance. Often quality treatment is not pursued because of financial considerations.

Learn as much as you can about the mental illness with which your family member has been diagnosed.

Recognize warning signs of relapse.

Find ways to handle symptoms of schizoaffective disorder or other mental illness. Some suggestions are: Try not to argue with your loved one if they have their hallucinations or delusions (as the person believes it is real); do not make fun of or criticize them; and especially do not act alarmed. The more calm you can be, the better it is.

Be happy with slow progress and allow your loved one to feel O. K. with a little success.

If your family member is out of control or suicidal (harm to self or others), stay calm and call 911. Do not try to handle it alone.

Hey dirtbag, no_vaseline. I see you are still trying to threaten and intimidate me over on Lansner's blog even though I no longer post there. You're quite the idiot! If you had been paying attention at all over the past two years, you would know that I am a democrat and have the highest regard for Bill Clinton. Keep it up.

A link or quote to these so called "harassments" on lansers blog would be nice. Otherwise you are posting accusations with no evidence behind it. Burden of proof is on the accuser. All you have said so far someone did this or that on the blog without any substance to show for it here.

I have not done it before, but I believe it makes it so that post by the ignored person won't even show up on your screen. So if you blocked IR2, you would just see my post then your post and not IR2's at all.

[quote author="SoCal78" date=1221628638]What exactly does the Ignore button do? Just block PM's from someone?

It blocks any posts by that particular person.

There is a place holder for the post though, so you can always view the post if you still want to see it.

You can always remove the person from the "ignore" feature any time you want.

You can try it to see what it does. Look at a post from me, then choose to ignore me. You'll see what I'm talking about.

You can still see that there was a post by that person.

And you can choose to view that particular post if you want.

Try it.

My fear of ignoring was that it would be hard to turn off the ignore. Glad to see it was easy to ignore and to turn off the ignore :)

You can't ignore IR2's posts - he's good for at least one or two belly laughs per day.
