Goro is pretty quiet.

[quote author="tenmagnet" date=1213680052][quote author="25w100k+" date=1213678177]I'm a big fan of Goro off of alton and culver. Its small, and not exactly a 'hip' sushi bar, but the sushi is fantastic.</blockquote>

Should?ve hit RA then checked out STRIKE.

Audrina was there.

That's Wasa. Best crunchy roll ever, and excellent toro year round.

I've tried many others in OC and Wasa is by far the best. I prefer the one in Newport at Macarthur and Bristol. The atmosphere just seems a little better than the one in Irvine. The service can be spotty in Irvine but it has gotten much better. For quality of sushi, you won't find better. Also, the owner of Wasa just opened a new restaurant/sushi bar at South Coast Plaza, Hamamori. I haven't checked it out yet.

Hamamori is very nice, but its very, Very expensive. A interesting dinner experience, but my wife and I decline to go there anymore.

Anyways good luck

p.s. Wasa FTW also!

Yeah Right!

Too bad, you need a VIP bracelet to get in

We?re talking about girls from the Hills, not ?Rock of Love?

Ayame in Orchard Hills is no doubt THE best Japanese sushi restaurant in Irvine, and possibly all of OC. If you are familiar with "Zipangu" in Costa Mesa, this is of the same owner. They have continuously received numerous awards as being the best Sushi restaurant in So Cal. Quality comes at a price though. but if you have not tried it, I definitely recommend you splurge once just so you have something to reference to when comparing restaurants. The place is small though, so get there early or be prepared to wait.

http://www.zipanguoc.com/

BTW, I have recently visited a few of the restaurants mentioned above. Some of them are under new ownership and quality has deteriorated. Notably Angote and Taiko.

I like Ayame a lot and have been there many times. Unfortunately, it suffers from the "Bren Tax" or the "Orchard Hills Tax," in that you get to pay extra for the location as opposed to Zipangu. It also has a smaller menu than Zipangu. (If you're just looking for sushi / sashimi, then that doesn't matter, obviously.) Between Zipangu and Ayame, I prefer Zipangu. The staff at both are incredibly nice.

i've been to RA a few times. acpmette and i were invited to their grand opening 70s party. we've also had them cater a private event. we told them to give us their best showing and left the menu selection up to them. big mistake. half of the items they brought included cream cheese. i guess it was our fault. 70s party and sushi should have been a dead giveaway. once the bar scene dies off, this place is going to be dead.

try chef abe's bluefin in crystal cove if you're up for a splurge. his older place in balboa, restaurant abe, is still decent (and much cheaper) even though he doesn't run it anymore.

[quote author="momopi" date=1211520133][quote author="Trustafarian" date=1211510105]I'm looking for good sushi restaurants in Irvine. My wife is craving sushi after recently giving birth to our new twin boys. She wasnt able to eat it during the pregnancy. My wife and I recently moved here from Costa Mesa, so we are relatively clueless to what sushi restaurants are around here. We want to keep close to home so that the grandparents dont have to babysit too long. Any recommendations would be great.</blockquote>

Hello Trustafarian,

Of the Japanese restaurants in Irvine that I've tried, I only like specific items and not the whole menu.

At Niko Niko in Woodbury Town Center, get the "Sakura Blossom".

At Maki Maki in Irvine Spectrum, get their "cooked" cut rolls. The Iron Monkey roll is quite interesting.

I've heard good things about Ayame at Orchid Hills Plaza, but never eaten there personally.

I prefer to eat Sushi in Costa Mesa (your old town). Angotei, Ikko, & Shibucho are my favorites. At Angotei get the "shrimp boat" & tataki. Sometimes they have toro at very good prices, but if you ask "give me what's good today" you might get seared fish bones @_@. At Ikko get normal sushi dishes. Ikkou has some interesting appetizer items but I consider them distractions, call ahead for reservation.

Shibucho is at border with Newport Beach and rarely packed, go there for dinner, if you're on a budget sit at the regular tables (not the sushi bar) and order the $32 Omakase. If you can afford to splurge, sit at the sushi bar and order Omakase (will probably cost you $50/person). Order regular sushi items here, their uni is really good and save the over-sized tamago for last. Either I'm lucky, or the elder sushi chief taste-test every board/container of uni, I've had it many times there and each & every piece tastes nice and fresh.

I also read that Bluefin in Newport does $35, 5-course Omakase Lunch specials. I've not had their lunch, you can try it out. Be warned that dinner bill can be expensive there.</blockquote>

I agree momopi... I like Woodbury center as well... and I usually order the blossom. Great assortment of fish, beautifully presented and reasonable price wise for what you get...

I've been looking for the best in SoCal since I moved here several years ago. I'm not sure if you will find it in OC. I've tried almost all of the above and still say Wasa is the best of the bunch. Haven't tried Ayame but if it is anything like Zipangu, then I won't be impressed, aside from the very inventive rolls. To get my top approval, the fish has to be outstanding. I haven't found anything here that compares to the restaurants in Chicago or New York. I'm sure LA has got to have the best sushi restaurants in SoCal. I've only tried one though, Matsushasu. It's one of the top in LA according to Zagat. Once again, unimpressed (except for sitting next to Alec Baldwin). If Nobu in Malibu is anthing like the original one in Tribecca, then I'm sure it's outstanding. I've heard that Koi is good, but maybe that's because of the celebrity scene.

Got take out from Ayame tonight. I stand corrected. This may be better than Wasa. The spicy tuna roll certainly was better. But the price, good grief. The assorted sushi dinner was $23, $4 more than Wasa and no soup and salad. The a la carte is very expensive. Not sure if it is worth it. Lunch might be though. The assorted sushi lunch is $14 plus you get soup and salad and only one less piece of sushi.

i'm surprised nobody's mentioned kitiyama yet... on bristol near fletcher jones. caters to the power suit crowd. menu food is overpriced but sit at the sushi bar and look for the head sushi chef yama-san. his shirt will have his name on it.

Sushi Time has half price off on their sushi selections. Friendly service and has a familiar crowd that goes there. Not too busy and always fresh. It is on Walnut between Jamboree and Tustin Ranch Road.

Wasa has been great every time I had it. Was not at all impressed with Ra... Just had it this week. Since our office is near the District, they called us up and invited to bring over lunch for free. They brought over a huge spread and I tried a little of everything. Nothing great to speak of.

Nice.... I have to check out these cool sushi places.

So is there any decent Korean restaurants in Irvine? The only place i know (and eat) when I visit Irvine is this Irvine Tofu restaurant between walnut ave and jeffrey. There are so many koreans living in Irvine, but why are the Korean Restaurants so ghetto. Whatz up with that?

Panda LOVES korean food, but can't find a decent place to eat in Irvine. HELP!!!!

Two things IrvineRealtor doesn't trust:

1. Anyone who starts a sentence with, "Can I be honest with you?"

2. Free sushi.

ipop, did everything from RA seem like it had cream cheese in it???

panda, there's two korean places on walnut and jeffrey. another in northwood plaza on irvine blvd. there's a korean market there as well. another korean restaurant at university ctr on jeffrey/university and michelson. two more at culver and the 5. i'm sure i'm missing a few too. so much korean around here right now you should have no problems.
