Does border drop mean Trump's tough talk is working?

Washington (CNN)Illegal Southwest border crossings were down 40% last month, according to just released Customs and Border Protection numbers -- a sign that President Donald Trump's hardline rhetoric and policies on immigration may be having a deterrent effect.

According to CBP data, the 40% drop in illegal Southwest border crossings from January to February is far outside normal seasonal trends. Typically, the January to February change is actually an increase of 10% to 20%.

It's morning in America.

THis must be the luck category that Perspective was talking about.

This is good news. It was also good news when similar job growth occurred under the prior President, but I don't remember too much celebration here about those facts.

Should we express myopic concern and alarm when the stock market is down one day, or the next jobs report is below expectations, and attribute this to Trump?

The reason could be because we haven't seen the same massive bashing that we have with the current president occurring with the previous president. In fact stumbles and lack of follow thru with "promises" or campaign issues just went by without a single mouse click.

Seems some people have a myopic Perspective and selective memory and at such a young age...... tsk tsk tsk.

Chairman of House Ways and Means Committee in Feb 2017 when report shows adding 235,000 jobs: "This is a great report" "Our Economy is moving in the right direction"

Same Chairman of House Ways and Means Committee in Feb 2016 when report shows adding 242,000 (revised to 237,000) jobs : "It's disappointing to see so little growth"

He's a shameless politician, which explains his hypocrisy. I know we're anonymous here, but how do we explain why folks here would engage in such ridiculousness regularly?

Deficit Could Force Clinton to Scale Back Plans
December 19, 1992|JAMES RISEN | TIMES STAFF WRITER

http://articles.latimes.com/1992-12-19/news/mn-2108_1_clinton-adviser

Clinton's campaign program, titled "Putting People First," relied heavily on economic and budget assumptions issued by the Congressional Budget Office at the beginning of the year. The CBO released updated--and much worse--deficit figures in August, calling into question the budget assumptions Clinton used in his economic program

The article linked to Obama illustrates differences, no? Obama was questioning certain methods and assumptions. Fair criticism, no? Trump's team is preemptively questioning the very need for the CBO to be estimating the cost of RyanCare, much less the prospective scoring results. They're doing this after Trump has touted the CBO for its great analysis of healthcare bills in the past.

They all question validity, whether it is in the formulas, methods or conclusions. If the numbers don't support the policy they all argue against them.  This is consistent from President to President.

Yes, if the CBO's evaluation isn't perfectly favorable, affected politicians will question the validity of the process/results. Trump's team doesn't stop there. They're questioning the very need for the CBO to score the bill, they're dismissing the evaluation before it's even been completed and published, and they're doing this after Trump has extolled the ability of the CBO to accurately score healthcare bills in the past.

There is scale here.

Here's the blueprint for all Trump apologists:

Explaining Trump: How the White House cleans up after a tweetstorm
https://www.yahoo.com/news/explaini...-cleans-up-after-a-tweet-storm-160207828.html

If you attempted to describe the White House tactics in bullet points, it would probably look something like this:

Hope that there are enough stories in the mix that you never have to defend individual claims for an extended period of time
Rotate voices as others potentially lose credibility
Rely on the traditional respect afforded to the occupant of the Oval Office, and say that Trump obviously must have a good reason for anything he says
Argue that even the most outlandish claims had already been confirmed by other outlets or are common knowledge
Say that the American people love that the president says whatever is on his mind, regardless of what he?s saying
When all else fails, ignore the fact that you?re speaking for the president and say that Trump?s words ? and especially his  tweets ? speak for themselves, even if they don?t
Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly, who was interviewed by CNN last week about the Obama wiretapping claims, perhaps best expressed the view that the president is entitled to the presumption that he knows what he?s talking about.

I have been in the numbers game for over thirty years and I actually agree that most numbers, going back many years are BS.  They have changed the formulas over and over.  Give you an inane example, the Dow Jones Industrial Average.  The composition and divisors have changed so much over its 132 year life.  It is not really a fair, static, consistent, comparison of the 30 stocks (most of which have changed over time) it follows. GDP (used to be GNP), unemployment, CPI  and all the other stats are constantly changed and "adjusted". They have morphed so much it is difficult to make apples to apples comparisons and thus flaw the conclusions.  Garbage in garbage out.

This strikes me as extreme cynicism and skepticism. Using your example, yes, the DOW has changed over the years/decades. None of these changes were made clandestinely intending to fool folks. The purpose of the index is to represent the ~30 largest cap companies. This is not static. Anyone how misuses the DOW to represent something else, is doing so with malice. This goes to the character of the person, not the DOW.

A person's character is further revealed, when they attack certain statistics for years, and then embrace the same statistics when it favors their agenda.
