I moved here from the east coast a little over a year ago and I've come to the realization that the OC has a certain type of stereo type "typical" person living here:

(1) Drives a leased (cause they really can't afford to purchase) BMW, Audi or Mercedes

(2) Has 3 kids (older ones)

(3) Drives fast and thinks they are a bad ass on the roads

(4) Are Republicans

(5) Women wears Prada and Gucci purses

(6) Cocky and only think of themselves

Are most people here in the OC leasing or have purchased a condo?

I have an older Sony ES reciver, but I've got a new set of Vandersteen Model 1 surrounds and an M&K Subwoofer to pair with the Vandersteen Model 2 mains. It's a little clunky looking but my HT has enough volume to tear your face off.

The Model I and the sub were courtesy of some poor about-to-be-foreclosed-on-and-divorced fool who dumbly purchased in the Villages of Columbus.

We have 2 Hondas - a CRV and Accord - and they are both owned outright. Have never leased a car.

(2) Has 3 kids (older ones)

Two kids for us. They are still very young.

(3) Drives fast and thinks they are a bad ass on the roads

I am a cautious driver. Usually too hesitant. I'm protecting myself from said bad-asses.

(4) Are Republicans

I'm a registered Republican and a very conservative person. But, I don't vote a straight ticket.

(5) Women wears Prada and Gucci purses

I am a bargain shopper. To me... hoarding money gives me a better high than spending it. I've never spent over $50 on a purse until yesterday...just bought my first Coach purse... second-hand... on Ebay. I'd rather carry a cheap bag and have a wallet full of dough than an empty wallet and a hot bag. If someone gifted me with a Prada or Gucci purse I'd sell it and put the money into an interest-bearing account.

(6) Cocky and only think of themselves

Not cocky. I like to help others and have done volunteer work with the American Cancer Society, fed the homeless at a soup kitchen for a few years, helped with a pajama drive for a local children's home, etc.

I sold my home in June and am now renting an IAC apartment, waiting to trade up.

I agree with everything but #2. Most people I know only have 1 kid. A lot of people don't have any kids. When I was growing up in OC most of the families I knew only had 2 kids, except for the Catholics.

I have a friend who is black, and I have another friend who is from India, and one of my neighbors is asian, so I am not racist. ;)

Joking aside, I feel all the things you do as volunteer is very admirable.

Yeah, it's true those things can't prove I am not cocky, as the question poses... but helping less fortunate people tends to humble you (it certainly does me) and I think cocky people generally lack humbleness. Everyday I am thankful that I have a roof over my head and in a nice, safe area no less... food to eat, clothes to wear, and my family is in good health. Volunteering at a free dental clinic allowed me to help give care to low-income children who likely won't receive regular checkups because their parents can't afford it but it makes me thankful for having access to good care. Knowing that "orphans" usually don't even own a single pair of pajamas and have to sleep in their clothes - makes me very thankful my kids have a drawer-full. It is impossible to be cocky when you see that your needs are met and those of others aren't. I think a lot of OC'ers become complacent... like bratty little children in adult bodies it's all about "ME, ME, ME" and they think everyone has what we have. They do not. When I see some poser speeding by me in a hot red Corvette (yesterday) I look at that and wonder how many hungry kids they could feed or buy school supplies for with that money instead or how many more nights a mother and child could stay protected in a shelter and away from domestic abuse because of their help. Store up your treasures in heaven - not here on earth! Stepping off my soapbox now.

People are wearing nice outfit but their underwear and socks have holes. Go to the Well Fargo ATM by Culver and Walnut and pick up the transaction slips people left behind. You will be amazed to see the account balance left on their accounts and the cars they drive. I did that for 5 hours one evening a year ago and I learned a lot.

Socal,

I think buying a home in Irvine may not be suitable for you. The services you do are not in Irvine. Irvine has no program or shelters for the needy and helpless. There is a battered women shelter by UCI and that is it. The local politics and economic formula drove many decisions. NIMBYism is why I left Irvine.

Perhaps. Although I have a separate account for ATM cash. That way, if my ATM card is stolen or compromised, the thieves only have access to a few grand at most. My primary account has a number of security features and isn't linked to any credit card, ATM card or electronic debit.

Good thinking!! You are cautious.

Well we certainly are not far from Santa Ana and other areas of OC where one can live in Irvine but volunteer close-by. Also the IUSD appears to take a philanthropic approach with it's no-person-turned-away policy of the School Readiness Program to ensure all kids get the same good headstart before Kindergarten, and many parents volunteer their time in the schools to help the children. Hey! Speaking of less fortunate - Do you know I saw a hobo at Jeffrey Open Space Trail on Sunday? I was a little surprised. I hadn't seen one in Irvine yet. But hey at least he has good taste. :) Yes I do feel conflicted for wanting to live here but I often meet other Irvinites especially through church who like to do community service projects. It is not prevelant in Irvine but it is not hard to find either. The egomaniacs do get to me, though.

*Changes plan to knock skeker out and steal his wallet to knock skeker out and steal his car. Need to find chop shop within 4 minutes of Irvine...*

(1) Drives a leased (cause they really can?t afford to purchase) BMW, Audi or Mercedes

Not leased, and almost paid for 97 Bimmer that I bought used about three years ago.

(2) Has 3 kids (older ones)

Nope, no kids and not really sure I want any.

(3) Drives fast and thinks they are a bad ass on the roads

Just get out of my way and it won't be an issue. And... I really am a bad ass on the road.

(4) Are Republicans

Please... I am an independent. I like to think for myself, otherwise I would have been wearing the Phil Gramm glasses and thought that the economy was fine and bought a house in 2005.

(5) Women wears Prada and Gucci purses

Blah, you need to check BK's post about validation. I have a much more fun and extremely less expensive interpretation of what validation is.

(6) Cocky and only think of themselves

Me? No way! I have been a major cheerleader for any time IHBers have brought up donations and even have done matching donations of IHBers. I also have posted 3000 plus times, and I don't always do it to read what I just wrote for myself, I usually do it for the readers here. Do you know how many people IHB has saved from buying a home? We will probably never know how many we really have but I know of quite a few.

Are most people here in the OC leasing or have purchased a condo?

I have a love/hate relationship with my yard, but I lean more towards love. I just have no love for those filthy dirty grass eating rabbits. Now you will have to excuse me, I have to go clean the air rifle...

I predicted the space around there a year ago would be ideal for the high class hobo who thinks he is better than other hobos. Bus shelter with roof is ideal for rain and sun protection. Near-by restroom by the Jeffrey Open Space is ideal for sponge bath and other needs. Albertson down the street with dumpsters full of expired edible foods. Goodwill recycling donation center by the freeway carpool parking lots and behind 99 Ranch Market are often without attendant. Hobos have the first pick every Sunday morning of used Pradas and Gucci. BTW, the parking lot stinks with urine and feces since Goodwill for the last 15 years has not provided restroom for the employees there. I am sharing my retirement plan with the all of you. Many nights the gate to the community pool and spa is open. Hobo's mortgage $0, association dues $0, property tax $0, Mello Roos $0 and living a resort lifestyle, PRICELESS!!

(1) Drives a leased (cause they really can?t afford to purchase) BMW, Audi or Mercedes

Fully paid off Nissan 350Z

(2) Has 3 kids (older ones)

Nope. No kids.

(3) Drives fast and thinks they are a bad ass on the roads

The roads are too crowded to go fast! But when I get an opportunity...yeah I drive fast. Bad ass? Not really. I think people would laugh at someone of my stature saying "I'm a bad ass!"

(4) Are Republicans

Putting myself in a box titled "political party" is distasteful to me.

(5) Women wears Prada and Gucci purses

Why would I spend that much money on something I'm just going to destroy with use?

(6) Cocky and only think of themselves

Cocky? No. Confident? Yes. I just followed a 12 hour workday with 1 hour of cardio. I earn everything I have and am.

I would love to have more time to volunteer at a local small theater company, but I'm realistic about my free time. I don't have any.

Are most people here in the OC leasing or have purchased a condo?

I'm renting a townhouse. I go back and forth on whether I want an actual house or not when I buy.
