New hardwood floor over tile?

Didn't want to start a new thread for flooring... but does anyone have a good contact for carpet?  I wanna redo my upstairs with berber carpet, I have the shaggy carpet right now.

Normally, how much per sqft installed are the berber carpets? :)

Berber carpet with a child on the way is going to require a lot of upkeep to keep it looking good.

For a home with children, I'd avoid a loop and go with a twist. Easier to clean and I'd argue softer on a crawler's knees. Variegated color also helps so much. I had admired variegated in two other people's homes and finally went with it - yet another Costco purchase!

You beat me to the Costco recommendation :)
Yes, with a new born, it will be hard, but also easier to spot 'things' that the little one might put in his mouth. Congratulations Homer! Dragon baby?

My standard carpet from Irvine Pacific is pile (of crap).  It feels super cheap, very little strands so feels very thin.  I'm going to keep it for a few years for my daughter to wear it down before replacing it with something better.  In my old home, I had the loop/pile combo Berber, and that feels much thicker and softer.  It has the checkered pattern with looped squares.  I felt the pile portion got flat very quickly, and in higher traffic areas, the checkered pattern is almost invisible after just a few weeks.  Vacuuming gets the pattern back, but it becomes more and more invisible after each vacuum.

Why go carpet when you can go foam play mats!  :D

They even have espresso colors if you like it darker.

We have the friezes carpet (Twist?) in all our bedrooms right now and afraid of how much dust/dirt it may collect and in result may harm the baby??  Am I over thinking this?? The carpet is about 5 years old and has some pretty good life in it but not sure if a shorter hair carpet maybe better.

Here's a picture of how my carpet looks at home.

I actually have these for my daughter's play area.  I laid them out like parquet floors, but remove them when the Lakers play Boston  ;)

The Berber will harbor more dirt than your current carpet. I'd keep what you have unless you want to replace it for aesthetic reasons i.e. it's stained or you want a darker color that won't show dirt tracked in / spilled grape juice by the kid.

I was interested in Berber until my brother talked me out of it. He owns a big janitorial business. They clean carpets in malls, office buildings, hospitals and he has a contract with airlines to do the planes. They prefer the Argosheen method to use whenever possible due to very effective cleaning but you can't even do it on Berber. You'd have to steam it. Then over time the carpet padding may harbor moisture. Slower drying time, can't put furniture back right away. It may even harbor a mildew smell down in the carpet padding over time or if not done professionally (i.e. a rented unit.)

hey homer,

heres the stuff from irvine pacific... first pic is their color selection, 2nd pic is a better closeup of the fiber (ignore my tiles, i just had them there to see if theyd match my carpet, sorry it the only pic i have of the carpet upclose), 3rd pic is the brand and what not info...

i just went with the standard carpet, pearl color one... figured carpet is easy to rip out and replace vs other upgrades where id need to tear down walls n such... so just gonna wait till it wears out and then replace it 3-4 years down the line

think IP can sue me if they find out im posting pics of their stuff online? lol, or should i take em off?

hope this helps

We use cut berber... best of both worlds to us... low enough pile as not to hide "raisins" your kids might eat... but not too low so that it's hard on the feet/skin like tightloop berber.

And always get a darker color... like coffee brown... we used to have white... had to clean it it all the time, then we went to a lighter beige, and still had to clean it frequently... we are now using a darkish mocha color... haven't had to call out anyone for almost 4 years (but then again... our kids are older now).

The way I look at it, you know when you need to clean your carpet if it's a lighter color.  With darker colors, the carpet might be super dirty, but you don't know it.  We don't wear shoes inside the house (I guess it's a Asian thing..) so I call a carpet cleaner out every Spring when the time changes.  My friend who wears shoes inside the house calls the carpet cleaner after every Spring and Fall time change.

For the model homes, what kind of carpet do they have?  I remember them telling me it's berber but it looks different then what Chang posted.

Coffee table relocated to the garage so the baby doesn't split his head open... foam play mats galore... stylish furniture replaced with plastic toy storage bin... rubber adhesive pads on the fireplace... batten down the hatches with baby locks. Ssshhhh!! Homer doesn't know yet that his living room will be transformed into a daycare center!  :)

IP is retarded... u cannot duplicate models as is... my designer told me the model designers get free reign on all industry materials and the irvine design center only carries a tiny subset of whats out there...

for example i was like i want the marble in the san remo master bathroom... design center told me they do not carry that anymore

i ask them, i want 4'' backsplash for my 2nd and 3rd bathrooms like the model home... the design center tells me it only comes in 6'' backsplash, they cannot do 4'' for ALL materials... (inside im like wtf??)

so its a hit n miss (my examples is just off the top of my head... theres way more times i got shut down by the design center, i block it out of my head cause it agitates me)... u have to tell them exactly what model and room the carpet u like in the model is to see if the design center offers it as an upgrade... sometimes they have it, most of the times they dont lol...

We have two boys... In my home, there might be 4 deadly Lego pieces hiding in that photo.  There IS an upside to berber.
