New Car

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
No '15 740 in stock in all of SoCal, guess no BMW for me.  Shall I even consider the A8?  Seems like I can get a good deal with all the VW crap.

How about this one, slightly used, offer $57k

Thanks for the lookout but I doubt the dealer would budge much.  New cars get the $6500 cash back offer for the month of November, hence the 740i going for low $60k's.  Doubt the cash back applies to dealer certified used.

Anybody know of a good place for a kid to practice driving? Preferably around east or south Irvine. I'm thinking like some shopping center under construction or something. I learned how to drive at Savi Ranch in Y.L. when it was just marked streets and curbs with a couple stop signs, before construction began. A perfect learning experience. I was thinking something kind of like that. It has to be away from traffic. SoCal, Jr. is not of legal age to get a driver's permit. I just want him to get familiarized so he can drive me home when the bars close. Kidding! Just to get a foundation for understanding.

I white-knuckle it every time I'm driving in Irvine. It is scary as hell.

Scary as hell, yet the ideal place to teach your son how to drive.

Hire someone else to teach the kid, I got in a huge argument with my mom when she taught me how to drive, it was so bad I vowed to never teach my kid, too stressful.

If you're really determined, I hear BP is pretty dead :)

Good point. A relative also swore they'd never teach me again after I couldn't get the stick shift van to drive from a dead stop on a hill.. tough way to learn how to drive.

Yeah, I hear you. I've have had my fair share of stress while being taught by my dad (i.e. dropping the clutch while drifting onto a 50 mph. open road with cars quickly approaching his passenger's side, after taking off way too late to begin with). However, SoCal, Jr. is not yet old enough to drive in the eyes of the law. Therefore, no driving school would accept him at this time. I just want to start out small somewhere on private property. If I have to, I'll resort to a shopping center or office complex at night but I'd prefer daylight. Also, unlike some of us here, he will be starting off with an automatic transmission until mommy "switches gears" to a sports car in a couple years when I'll probably be going back to a stick. I'm open to suggestions on best places for beginners.

BP... ha! Was that a cemetery joke?  :)

Bought another new car yesterday. Edmunds really helped. Takes out a lot of the guesswork. Used Costco for the last purchase but with that, you go in blind. Will do Edmunds again. Adios, Costco.

What do you guys think of the Volvo XC90?  Caught my eye the other day, and I usually do not notice Volvos.  Didn't know they are Chinese owned now.

I like the look, but I would be more worry about the dependability and future resale value.

Can always lease it and not worry about value lower than market.
If there turns out to be an upside, can always roll that over.

Haven't checked the current effect of rate increase, probably offset by year end clearance incentives now.

Does Edmunds have a new car buying service?  How are the prices compared to Truecar?

Very awesome car.  My colleague's wife has one and its super luxurious inside.. it's safe.. quiet and has all the new technology.  I think they have the hybrid one?  Forgot what they said about that.

Edmunds is cheaper than Truecar, but even Edmunds is overpriced.  All of these sites are sponsored  by the dealers, so they have a vested interest in keeping prices high while making you think you got a good deal.

Hard to reply on.phone. For those interested, offers on Edmunds ranged from  $11 under MSRP to $100 over invoice for the identical vehicle. Big difference. Not like Costco's "Just go here" policy with no other info. Had a pretty good comparison as I bought the same make at the same dealership via both ways. I'm happy. Saved lots of trips. Like the old phone commercial, "Let your fingers do the walking."
