Mac or PC ?

Why is this Air so spendy?

There is a saying in Cycling that you pay more for Grams than pounds...maybe Apple have started using this adage too?

Seems fitting to put this up - "first" rogue cleaning tool for Mac (aka scareware).

if anyone is in the market for an very affordable / portable laptop ( UMPC) ... this one might sparks some interest. It's by Asus. I have one and it's been working very well for me. There's couple of different versions of the laptop..but it's great for people that need additional or backup laptop for simple internet/web browsing, word/excel doc, and other software on the go. I have this in addition to my home PC.

* default O/S is Linux, but comes with Window XP driver for installation (which I run in). This laptop is really tiny and light! I recommend getting the 4G model ( this allows for RAM upgrade later) check it out at newegg.com

price ranges from $299-499

OK, I bit the bullet and bought a Mac. I got the iMac instead of the Powerbook because I liked the monitor and the $1100 less purchase price.

Stats: 20" widescreen active matrix LCD display, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4MB shared 1.2 cache, 1GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, 320GB Serial ATA hard drive (!) , Slot-loading SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD+RW/CD-RW), ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM, Built-in iSight video camera (!) , Built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet (external DSL and cable modem ready), One FireWire 800 port; one FireWire 400 port; three high-speed USB 2.0 ports, Built-in AirPort Extreme wireless networking, Built-in Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR (enhanced data rate), Audio: built-in stereo speakers; integrated microphone; optical digital audio input/audio line in; optical digital audio output/headphone out, DVI video output; VGA video output; S-video and composite video output, wireless keyboard and wireless Mighty Mouse, Mac OS X, Safari browser, iChat AV, iLife (iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb, GarageBand, iDVD, iTunes), Photo Booth, iCal, Front Row, Spotlight, Dashboard and more. Phew, I just copied that off the box.

Continuing (because I have no idea how to separate paragraphs yet on this thing...when I try, it bunches everything back together). So pardon if this post seems like a run on sentence... OK, so what do I have to download in order to use the smileys ? Firefox ? Also, this font is so small, it's hurting my eyes. ISM, how do you make the font bigger. I tried, but it didn't apply. Are you having the same trouble ? I also have no clue how to cut and paste on this thing.

I'm going to do a trial period as I have 2 weeks to try it out before the return period ends. If I can't get the font bigger, I just might do that. So far, I haven't noticed that the Mac is any better than a PC...but I'm a noob so far. It is a sexy machine however.....

Trooper,

try to sign up for an intro class at the apple store. You will get most of your questions answered. The class is free.

Did you get the applecare which extend your bumper to bumper warranty to 3 years, plus hot line access. if not, you should consider it. worth the money IMO. Also, I had heard from people that their DVD drivers tend to have issues (maybe they have solved it ). I had an issue just couple months ago.

Good choice. I am sure you will be happier with a imac than a dell!

Trooper,

If you think the font size is too small on the main screen, then do this:

At the top left, you will see the blue apple, then finder, file, edit, view. Go to View, then "show view options", you will see there is a selection of font size.

this is for OS-X...not the Leppord though..I don't have Leppord yet...

I did not sign up for the extended warranty yet, I have up to one year to do so. It comes with a 1 yr warranty already, so I'll see how it goes. Yes, I bought the $99 once a week class thing. What an amazing deal ! The whole "porting" from PC to Mac thing is freaking me out. They want me to put everything I want ported, in one folder on my PC. But I want everything.....and I'm no computer techie. Does GeekSquad make housecalls for porting from PC to Mac ? I guess I would rather this happen in my home as opposed to BOTH my computers sitting for 24-48 hours in the Apple Store. I've also downloaded FireFox on the recommendation of momopi...and I see I have smileys available to me here ! But not on Safari. Weird.

Test to see if I can separate paragraphs with FireFox. EDIT: Yes.

Could not italicize either on Safari....can I on FireFox ? Yes.

too bad you don't work in orange county!

btw, i thought apple offer free user classes, which I was told it is good enough for avg. joe...maybe you can use the $99 for warranty instead of advanced class?

I could be wrong on this, since I didn't do any fact checking myself...I didn't buy any class...

Hi irvine123,

Yes, I bought the classes (99.00 for a full year, once a week). Currently, I don't have the time to get to one of them, but I will soon. I'm sure it will help a lot. Thx.

So Trooper, now for the big question....

PC or MAC?

Of course I do realize this thread could go on for ever...it could even last as long as it takes for the US to have some sort of stable economy..

Trooper,

Congratulations on your new Mac! After 12 years of PC use, I am ready to leave behind all the trouble that comes with PC. Although I am fairly experienced in all things Windows-related, my lifestyle and career requires something that "just works".

My last job involved maintaining a network of 40+ PCs and it was a nightmare. Although I did everything possible to lockdown and secure the workstations, a combination of user error and Window vulnerabilities never ceased to created problems on a daily basis.

I'm not saying that Mac users are exempt from these issues, but the chances are smaller (I briefly owned an iBook). Unfortunately, my $300 Dell at home is running strong so I don't have a good excuse to switch over. Someone please come by and give it a good kick.

BAD NEWS TO REPORT ABOUT MAC

One of the main reasons that I switched to Apple is bc of their past superior technical services both on the phone and in store. I use to get US based tech svs. that were very good.

I just called for tech support, after waiting for 15 mins, someone from Phillipens picked up the phone and she is absolutely cureless. So I asked her to transfer me back to US. So now I am back on the wait line again. This is exactly the reason I quit Dell! I am pissed...
