When I went shopping at Turners in Norwalk, I saw a row of Tesla super chargers being installed on far side of the Stater Brothers parking lot. The photo below is from Tesla forum back in Oct, the installation is mostly complete now with the fence removed.

I suspect supermarkets in certain areas would find it appealing to install the charging stations, so people would go recharge their cars and shop for groceries.

Ford Loses the EV Battle

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) was supposed to be the American car company leader in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. Its lead horse would be the F-150 Lightning, the electric-powered version of the best-selling vehicle in the United States for the past four decades. It hasn’t worked that way at all. Ford will cut the planned production of the Lightning in one large plant by half for next year. That is a huge retreat.

“We’ll continue to match production with customer demand." (These are the 15 worst-selling electric vehicles this year.)

Ford will be lucky to sell 25,000 Lightings this year. The forecasts for production in 2023 were many times that. The company pushed that forecast until next year. Ford management has to ask itself if it will have any year soon when Lightning sales will hit expectations.

It is hard to underestimate the blow to Ford. The company recently delayed its planned EV investment of $12 billion. Ford’s EV unit has lost $3.1 billion through the year's first three quarters. Also, Ford has been financially pinched between the EV debacle and a new, highly expensive UAW contract. That means product development costs are under pressure.

Electrek’s Take

As Rowan explained, there is no “slowdown in EV demand” happening. Global EV sales hit another new record in November, with nearly 1 million units sold.

Earlier this month, the US reached a milestone, with over one million EVs sold in 2023. This is the first time crossing the 1M mark in one year as demand continues climbing.

With new, more affordable models rolling out and charging options expanding, EV sales are expected to continue rising.

BloombergNEF expects the first IRA-supported EV and battery factories to open in the second half of 2024, with more coming online shortly after. This will likely fuel sales further by enabling cheaper options.

Doomed!…🤦🏽‍♂️😂😂😂🦄🌈

One million EV sales sounds like a lot, but it’s a sliver of total new-vehicle purchases. For example, Ford (NYSE: F) sold about 573,000 F-Series pickup trucks in the first nine months of the year compared to about 873,000 battery powered SUVs, trucks, and cars from 27 brands in the same period of time.

China’s Geely completes acquisition of Volvo

Geely Holding Group completed its acquisition of Ford's Volvo unit Monday in a $1.5 billion deal that gives the small-but-ambitious Chinese automaker a global brand and huge management challenges.

Congress provided $7.5B for electric vehicle chargers. Built so far: Zero.

The sluggish rollout could undermine President Joe Biden’s reelection messaging promoting electric vehicles.

Two years later, the program has yet to install a single charger
So does this count?

It's not zero... and that's as far as we know. If you read the article, there could be others being funded the same way.

Your misinformation links at work. 🤔

The Village Pizza strip Mall in Big Bear installed 8 Tesla Superchargers that were live at Thanksgiving.

Regular J1227 or other company fast charging still pretty barren up there.

just like global warming, always couched in the could have, should have, would have, might, maybe, perhaps language…. there is no try do, or do not.🤦🏽‍♂️😂😂😂🦄🌈

Well when the morons in charge commit $7 billion of our tax money to stupidity, I am actually happy they can’t seem to spend it. Hopefully next year they can claw it back before it’s blown and commit it to something useful…one can hope🤦🏽‍♂️😂😂😂

GM to lay off 1,300 Michigan workers as vehicles end production

GM plans to lay off about 1,300 workers in Michigan starting early next year due to vehicles they produce ending production.
  • The largest of the layoffs were expected. They include 945 workers at Orion Assembly who build Chevrolet Bolt models, which are ending production after this year.
  • The other 369 workers to be laid off are at GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly/Stamping, which will no longer produce the Chevrolet Camaro.

Facing the music: Germany and France shift gears on electric car subsidies, leaving EV market in uncertainty

"Subsidies for buying electric cars and developing solar energy will reduce. The expiration of electric car purchase subsidies will happen sooner than projected," stated Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economy, Robert Habeck, on Wednesday, December 13, as quoted by Deutsche Welle. However, he did not provide a specific date for when these changes will commence. Thus, those seeking assistance from the government to buy electric vehicles are uncertain how much time they have.

On Saturday, December 16, Robert Habeck announced that applications for electric car purchase subsidies can be submitted until December 17. The program which previously offered up to €6 thousand ($7,203) towards purchasing a zero-emission car was abruptly and unexpectedly discontinued. This abrupt change could lead to a significant decline in the popularity of electric cars in Germany, a country already lagging behind in this area.

Subsidy regulations are set to change in France as well. Those models with excessive CO2 emissions will no longer qualify for government support upon purchase. As a result, subsidies will no longer be available for the purchase of the Dacia Spring, Tesla Model 3, and MG4, presently the three most popular electric cars in France.

The new French regulation aims to cease state funding for cars produced in China. However, such a move threatens to disrupt the subsidy system in France, since many electric vehicles manufactured in Europe are too costly to qualify for subsidies under current French regulations.

This is cool. EVs allow for this type of innovation because it doesn't need to take up space with ICE components. You can add more passenger AND cargo space:

When I used to drive trucks, that was the one thing I was missing was a lockable secure storage space. I could put a tonneau cover on but it would have to be the hard lockable type, and it reduced the functionality of the bed. Frunks for trucks are awesome and the Ford's is much bigger and more usable than the CyberTruck's.

Volkswagen: The scandal explained

It's been dubbed the "diesel dupe". In September, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that many VW cars being sold in America had a "defeat device" - or software - in diesel engines that could detect when they were being tested, changing the performance accordingly to improve results. The German car giant has since admitted cheating emissions tests in the US.
Over the past decade and more, carmakers have poured a fortune into the production of diesel vehicles - with the support of many governments - believing that they are better for the environment. Latest scientific evidence suggests that's not the case

Audi puts big EV push on the back burner

Audi says it is now pulling back on what was a fairly ambitious rollout of upcoming electric vehicles in response to what its newly appointed CEO says is the EV “slowdown” and to “avoid burdening” factories and dealers.
“We first looked at what order and density of launches the organization could handle,” CEO Gernot Döllner told Bloomberg. “In the end, we decided to spread it out to not overwhelm the team and the dealerships.”

Electric Vehicle Start-Ups Are Running Out Funds

The trendy electric vehicle (EV) market could be in trouble as at least 18 EV and battery start-ups that went public in the last few years are running out of funds to operate, according to an analysis by The Wall Street Journal.
