So, what does a old, fat guy have to do to lose about 20 pounds of fat?  I gave up sweets for a while and thought the fat would melt off but not a chance.  I gave that up quickly.  :P

I don't need to look like that Michael Chang guy that spams me all the time.  :P  Anyone bought his stuff?  Does it work?  Hee, hee.

I can't afford liposuction.  :P

lower carb and fats, up your cardio and watch the goo melt off.

20 lbs. = 70,000 calories. Get a calorie counter app on your phone & start plugging away. Imo, it is absolutely critical in order to stay on track.

ive never bothered with the composition of calories.  i just keep it simple, you burn more calories than you take in, you will lose weight. perhaps by allocating more calories to protein vs carb/fats would get it off quicker but to difficult to manage long term in my opinion.

I think 20 lbs. "sounds" more manageable than 70000 calories.  :'(  How many chocolate bars is that?  I feel like Garfield.

Well.... Lets say you intake 1200 calories (absolute lowest an adult should consume, IMHO).  You gonna burn 1200 calories?? I would be surprised if you had the energy to burn that much consuming 1800 calories.

Agreed.

I'm not on a diet right now and I could stand to lose 20lbs - but what I've found in the past that worked for diets was:

Do not drink calories. Drink 90% water (occasionally drink beer, wine, juice, etc.)
Eat two light meals. Eating a light breakfast and a light dinner worked best for me. I targeted 400/calories per meal.
Eat one moderate meal. I targeted 800 calories for lunch.
Have one snack. I target 200 calories.

Total: 1,800 calories

I would work out almost every day and targeted a total calorie burn of 2,500 calories = 700 net calories burned.

With that diet, you'd lose a pound every 4-5 days (it'd take 80-100 days to lose 20lbs). Hardest part for me was being hungry a lot.

I have a really hard time with it now because I get headaches when I'm hungry so it makes it almost unbearable to be hungry a lot.

im not sure i understand your question of "you gonna burn 1200 calories." all im saying is that if your body naturally burns lets say 1600 calories just by being awake and you eat 1500 calories + run 2 miles a day and burn another 200-300 calories a day for a total calorie burn of 1800-1900 calories a day and you intake 1,500 you will lose weight.

Paleo diet and P90X.  You'll lose the wt, lose inches off your waist and look way more muscular.  Both take some discipline but you'll be amazed at your body transformation.

Simple changes:
1. Swap white rice with brown rice, and white bread with who wheat or double fiber. Keeps you full for longer.
2. Swap half off your carb (rice/ bread) with veggies.
3. Trader Joes has a huge variety of quinoa/ brown rice/ whole wheat pasta.
4. Quinoa - love of my life!
5. Eggs.
6. Lean meat (Homie..your area)
7. Nuts. Snack on almonds instead of something from the vending machine.
8. Coffee after dessert
9. Protein bars when you want death by chocolate.
10. Protein powder to enhance the shake.
11. Cut down on salt and sugar.

20lbs isn't too much. I lost 20 last year in a couple of months. Exercise/ weights tone you up, but it's eating that helps lose weight.

Sorry I'm trying to type on my iphone lol.

Oh gotcha!! I didn't factor in the calories burned by being alive factor  :P

Aww, don't be sad. Hey, the fatter you are, the easier this will be because the amount of calories you burn at rest (basal metabolic rate / resting metabolic rate) are higher so your daily deficit will be higher in the beginning. Instead of thinking how many Hershey bars you can't have, think of how many you can have, if the chocolate is that important to you. Each bar is approx. 210 calories. You can definitely budget that into your diet! That's what is great about counting calories. You can eat whatever you want. It's all about choices. A little give & take. You can allocate your calories however you want. Theoretically, you could eat nothing but Hershey bars all day and still lose weight. It's not recommended, but... it's possible.  :) Fwiw, I eat Dove Promises every single day and I still lose when I'm tracking.

Buy smaller high contrast plates.

It's all about portion control.  So you need to get the portions on autopilot at the right size.

That retrain yourself thing that I've done horribly at.  Basically, if you eat out, train yourself to eat half of the dinner order.

Then you can address the "I'm hungry" or cravings issues when they arise by adjusting your diet.

AKA, do as I say, not as I do.

I do eat lot of carbs like rice due to the Asian diet.  Although, my wife mixes half white and half brown rice.  Also, like bread.  Those things are convenient to make, etc.

I don't drink alcohol or soda or juice.  I drink de-caf coffee w/skim milk, skim milk and some green tea.  Of course, when I'm at customer sites, I do put in those half and half things in my coffee.

Definitely my vice is sweets and chips of all sorts.  :P And, I eat way too much of it.  I must be addicted to it.

i would say start simple/small.  It's hard for people to maintain huge diet/exercise changes with today's busy life.  So still cut out the sweets.  Do you drink soda or empty calories?  I would cut those as well.  Then I would eat the same but try smaller portions.  Throw in some cardio and you should see some progress.

I have to agree with Qwerty but to an even larger extent. On average, our bodies burn at rest about 12 calories per pound of weight. 1,600/12 = 133. What man here only weighs 130 lbs.?? If Irvinehusky or Qwerty were, say, 200 lbs, that would be 2,400 calories burned before considering exercise. It's possible to burn less at rest. I have a really low metabolism. I count 10 cal/lb. is all I burn and that's with moderate exercise! But still - - that would be 160 lbs. at that rate. I venture to say Qwerty weighs more than 160. 1200 is no sweat, and 1600 is still no sweat.

if i had no fat on me i would weigh about 185. i used to weigh 205-215 with a 32 inch waist.

IIRC you only burn calories if you have body weight that is not pure fat. The more muscle / bones you have the more calories you burn. Putting on pure fat doesn't help.

I used to weigh 122 lbs with a 26 inch waist as a senior in high school. What happened?  :'(
