Culture, Class, Community and Race in Irvine and Beyond

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Since this forum is about 'race'. Why is it that some builders' sign up sheet has this question: "Are you hispanic"? Is it some kind of survey that I am not aware of?

<p>Yes, I'm also waiting for Whole Foods to open.

I'm planning to go there for lunch, their Tustin will close and move to The District with an expanded food to go section. Some day this month will be open.

</p>

<p>The District is great. Costco (w/ gas station), Lowe's, and Michaels' (yes, even for a guy) all together.</p>

<p>I plan on visiting the Petco and the Target, and once we find a babysitter, the AMC (or is it an Edwards?) will be accessible too.</p>

<p>That Warner entrance is rapidly becoming not so secret, but I love it.</p>

<p>Now if only Columbus Square would put a second exit into Warner in addition to the one on Harvard, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.</p>

<p>PS</p>

<p>I swear the white:nonwhite ratio of people looking at the homes around here is like 1:8.</p>

<p><em>I swear the white:nonwhite ratio of people looking at the homes around here is like 1:8.</em></p>

<p>I noticed this in early 2006, when everyone was wondering what was about to happen in OC RE. The couples walking around with agents seldom spoke English. I think us Wonderbreads overspent on our tacky 20" wheels and got financially locked out of the market a little earlier. </p>

The CC&R from the 1920’s describe techniques, rules and proportion in designing a great house. They were written by architects and planners. The CC&R today are written by attorneys. It is the CC&R that acted like a constitution that pedigree communities continue to have a method to guide new constructions and minimizes eye sores created by home owners with questionable taste. These were a set of rules to protect the RE value of a community.

CC&R today is written to minimize bickering neighbors such as one must pick up the trash bin from the sidewalk within 24 hours or no parking in front of someone else’s driveway. I would like to add no facing one’s feng shui mirror at another house.

Almost all the ladies who have taken care of my son since I went back to work part-time (and now full-time) for the past 4 years have been Persian. They are all phenomenal, I just can't say enough good things about the quality of care they have given my son over the years. And, my next-door neighbor is an old Persian grandmother. She speaks about 5 words of English (and I speak like 2 words of Farsi!), so we communicate via hand gestures, grunts, and hugs! A couple times a year, we exchange gifts (plants, home-baked goodies, toys for my boy, etc.) and cards that I bring in to my son's daycare so his teachers can translate my notes into Farsi, and hers into English. Best neighbor I have ever had. Neighbors on the other side of me are a Chinese family - I have tried to be friendly but they just want nothing to do with me.

ISM, I was going to suggest <a href="http://www.bablefish.com">www.bablefish.com</a> for and English to Farsi translation....but I couldn't find Farsi as an option. Perhaps there is another site that will do it for you !

Thanks Trooper, but the daycare ladies get a real kick out of helping me with my translations, and I have way too little energy/motivation to try to figure it out from a web site. I spend way too much time bubble-blog surfing as it is; no more web time allowed in my time budget.

<p>irvinesinglemom,</p>

<p>You're the cutest. </p>

<p>Even if you do wish my property to go down by half!</p>

ISM, sounds like your son will be well educated in some of the diversity of Irvine. I have gotten a wide range mixed response from Asian folks in Irvine. I once said "hello" to an Asian woman in a Northwood neighborhood as she was walking by. No response. So I raised my voice, waived and said "HI!!" Still nothing. Maybe it was because I was standing next to my friend, an Asian girl. Hmmm. Plenty of friendly Asians though.

Bk, I imagine those old CC&R's are interesting. Probably a lot of unapologetically racist statements. No "Negroes, Mexicans, Italians, Jews, Chinese. . ." I can just imagine it. Any good bits you can share?

<p>LOL..I don't think it's race so much as their psychological background when it comes to being friendly or not. A lot of people aren't "friendly" because they want to maintain their privacy and security. They're usually too busy or thinking about other thoughts instead of saying hi back...Maybe they're worried that their ARM will reset or maybe they're going through a divorce...instead of guessing just ask them why they didn't say hi.</p>

<p>Man, I miss your blog OC_fliptrack!...I don't know if you're single, but with all the forclosures about to commence alot of women are going to want divorces from their husbands...You can console them through their difficult times while helping them spend their alimony checks...Funny thing is that it doesn't matter how ethnic the wife is or whether or not she can speak a lick of English, they sure know the word "Alimony"</p>

<p>LOL. I think I'd stand a much better chance with recently-foreclosed divorcees if I were a homeowner myself. What's worse is that I live with a roommate. Not so cool for someone over 30. On the other hand, my downpayment pot-o-money gets lots of new friends every week thanks to my low cost of living.</p>

<p>It's all temporary (sigh). Whatever happened to just going out and buying a house when you were at that point in your life?</p>

<p>Inre my blog... This one is better. </p>

<p>Trooper,</p>
